THIS JUST IN: Climatologists now believe that the recession of the Laurentide Ice Sheet triggered three successive jokulhaups approximately 13,000 years ago that inundated the Mohawk and Hudson Valleys of New York state in a flood of superheated meltwater. The catastrophic event completely drained Lake Agassiz, an immense glacial lake located in the center of North America. Prior to the eruptions, Lake Agassiz stretched from Winnipeg to Minneapolis, larger than all of the Great Lakes combined; it held more water than is contained in all the lakes of the world today.

This surge of 440,000 sq km of water radically altered the eastern seaboard and raised the global sea level one to three meters. Research suggests that the subsequent thermohaline circulation reduction ended an ice age and paved the way towards a habitable North America.
