"Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification."
A primary reason Paul says this, I believe, is because in order to phrophesy, which is not some mystical occurance, you have to here from God. You converse with Him when you pray, so why not ask what He's saying about a person, or situation, and relay the info? That's all prophesy is!
Our main scripture was 1 Corinthians 12:6-11 which names all the gifts of the spirit. We got side tracked on a few things and I suppose I'll post those tangents later because they were equally if ot just as good as the message.
The biggest thing that stood out to me when reading this passage was the way that the bible separates healing and miracles. The reason, I believe, this is is because healing shouldn't be a 'miracle' for a Christian. Healing should be the average, the everyday for every Christian. That was just a little something to chew on. :-)
It says to one he gives the gift of wise advice to another special knowledge, another great faith. To another the gift of healing, to another the gift of miracles. Prophesy, discernment, other tongues and interpretation.
