A toned-down version of Left 4 Dead 2 has been given a rating of MA15+ after the original was refused classification last month.

According to the Classification Board's report, the modified version removes considerable amounts of gore from gameplay.

“The board notes that the game no longer contains depictions of decapitation, dismemberment, wound detail or piles of dead bodies lying about the environment,” it said.

“No wound detail is shown and the implicitly dead bodies and blood splatter disappear as they touch the ground.”

The report said melee weapons such as “axes, crowbars and chainsaws” were still featured in the game.

Electronic Arts spokesperson Cameron Jenkins said the company still hoped the original version of the game would receive a classification.

“We are waiting until we get the results back from the resubmitted full version, just in case it gets classified after working with the (Office of Film and Literature Classification), we would much prefer to release that one,” he said.

According to gaming blog Kotaku, developer Valve submitted the modified version to ensure the game could be released in November and that Australians would receive a free update to the edited version if the original game was classified.

We really need an R18+ rating.

I made a mistake last night with the left 4 Dead 2 censored news article I uploaded last night and accidently gave the blame to the wrong people. While I was rewriting a few times, I wrote "Valve" instead of the "OFLC". I was preoccupied last night and didn't read back on what I wrote, so I'll make an ammendment just so people are all on the same page.

Recap: L4D2's unbanned in Oz. But censored, decapitations and dismemberments removed. The game has an MA15+ rating.

Valve is trying it's best efforts to give us the uncensored Left 4 Dead 2 version for both Xbox 360 and PC owners. I wish to appologise to them and anyone else who thought I was blaming them for doing good. I hope the best success for them in getting this done. I don't want something from L4D1 to be removed in it's sequel.

Right now I am disappointed in the OFLC and its reviewal methods. I cannot believe that something so basic to the horror industry and game industry: Dismemberment/decapitations were removed just so the game could pass the review into MA15+.


Anyway lets hope that Valve manages to persuade them to re-release the uncensored version.

The point being that while we may have finally gotten Left 4 Dead 2 with the blood count left as it is, Decapitation and dismemberment of the zombies has been removed from the game. Oddly enough it's with something that we're USED TO IN GAMES SINCE 1997.

I made a mistake last night and I'm re-writing this section as I was somewhat preoccuppied at the same time and by doing so wrote in the wrong company I was disappointed at. Sorry.

I'm disappointed at the OFLC for needing something that's been in video games for a long time - that we are accustomed to in horror films to be removed. This situation with the OFLC has no less raised a few concerns about their reviewing scheme, as this will be an occasion in which something from the original game will be removed in its sequel.

My anger is not aimed towards Valve. Valve's trying it's hardest to get the game released in it's original state for both Xbox and PC. I thank them for their time and efforts in dealing with the OFLC.

If all comes to worse though we can rely on the modding community to make an uncensored patch for us.
