The Best List for Local Multiplayer Games on PC/Steam/SteamOS/BigPicture/Windows/Mac/Linux

Local Multiplayer (not LAN) - Gaming with multiple players using a single device/console/pc/steammachine

Heres a list of Catagorys:

Local Multiplayer - Multiplayer that accommodates multiple players and controllers connected to the same device, PC or Console. (Co-Op or Versus)

Local Split-Screen Multiplayer - The players are allocated a section of a screen.

Local Shared-Screen Multiplayer - The players share the same in-game camera.

Local Dynamic-Screen Multiplayer - a combination of split and shared screen that usually splits when the players in-game get too far apart (Lego: Lord of the Rings).

Local Multi-Screen Multiplayer - The players are allocated a full screen each, but still attached to the same device locally.

Local Hot-seat/Turn-based multiplayer - The players take it in turns to play, using the whole screen (Worms, Burnout Paradise).

Local with Online Multiplayer - local multiplayer that accommodates multiple players and controllers connected to the same device but also connected to other players online.

Local with LAN Multiplayer - local multiplayer that accommodates multiple players and controllers connected to the same device but also connected to other players over a LAN.

Local VR (Virtual Reality) Multiplayer - Similar to 'Local Multi-Screen Multiplayer', multiple VR headsets such as 'Oculus Rift' can be plugged into the same device/pc/console/steammachine. Each player would have their own private in-game camera attatched to the VR display.

Please help to Steam-Tag all 'Local Multiplayer' games you know of on the Steam Store Pages, you must name it Local Multiplayer exactly. This will make Steam aware that people want more Local Multiplayers and will help others to discover new ones. Hopefully Local Multiplayer will become an official catagory on the Steam Store and Big Picture.

I think we can all agree that the PC is more than capable for Local Multiplayer gaming, whether its on your TV or maybe you have a large monitor. For years Activision has been pulling the split-screen feature from the COD franchise on PC but not from consoles, even keeping it in for last-gen consoles.

In some cases, the PC has more advantages to local split-screen multiplayer than consoles do, for example:

Higher resolutions - 4K = 1080p PerPerson with a 4-Player split
Uncapped Performance - Higher framerates and graphics on split-screen
Controller Choice - Mix and Match PS3, PS4, 360, XB1 and Steam Controller
Custom Maps/Mods - Endless maps, gameplay alterations = replay value
Portabilty - Gaming Laptops are more practical to carry around with you on the go, why not plug it into a friends TV if you have it with you and play some split-screen, they might already have the controllers too!

There is no good reason to remove split-screen multiplayer on a PC multiplat. It's not fair to expect PC gamers to pay so much more for multiple copies of the game and multiple gaming PC's just so we can achieve the split-screen experience at home, when console players can just pay a fraction of the price. Its not practical either to stack 2 screens on top of 2 screens while wasting over 4x more energy because we have to use 4 PC's at a time for 4-player when having a controller match on the couch/sofa.

Whether you care about Call of Duty or not, Activision hold a great influence over the industry. Whatever practices they do, others will follow, so if you want to see more local multiplayer games on PC its important to stop developers believing PC is only for solo desktop users.

I've just updated the list with probably another 50 to 100 titles, let me know if there are any problems, my sources can be misleading sometimes.

Looks like lots of great new Local Multiplayer games are coming soon to steam in the near future. Also i don't know if anyone has realised this but when browsing the steam store in big-picture mode, there is now a new catagory called Local Multiplayer :D
