Bitcoin Whitepaper (A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System) - 31 October 2008 by Satoshi Nakamoto

Genesis Block of Bitcoin (block number 0) - 3 January 2009 - coinbase text: The Times Jan/03/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks.

The first open source bitcoin client - 9 January 2009, hosted at SourceForge.

Pizza Day - May 22, 2010 10,000 mined BTC for two pizzas delivered from Papa John's.

Oracle - An oracle is a bridge between the blockchain and the real world.

The Oracle Problem - the security, authenticity, and trust conflict between third-party oracles.

On the bitcoin blockchain, data forgery is very unlikely to happen. The consensus mechanism (proof-of-work) requires a considerable amount of computing power for blocks to be added. Since every block is added (sequentially) every ten minutes (in media), a change in a previous block would require a computing power whose costs would largely exceed the benefit of the forgery

"Proof-of-work has the nice property that it can be relayed through untrusted middlemen. We don't have to worry about a chain of custody of communication. It doesn't matter who tells you a longest chain, the proof-of-work speaks for itself."
~ Satoshi Nakamoto

"The requirement is that the good guys collectively have more CPU proof-of-worker than any single attacker."
~ Satoshi Nakamoto

"Nodes can leave and rejoin the network at will, accepting the proof-of-work chain as proof of what happened while they were gone."
~ Satoshi Nakamoto

"The proof-of-work chain is a solution to the Byzantine Generals' Problem."
~ Satoshi Nakamoto

"The CPU proof-of-worker proof-of-work vote must have the final say. The only way for everyone to stay on the same page is to believe that the longest chain is always the valid one, no matter what."
~ Satoshi Nakamoto

"Bitcoin itself cannot scale to have every single financial transaction in the world be broadcast to everyone and included in the block chain. There needs to be a secondary level of payment systems which is lighter weight and more efficient. Likewise, the time needed for Bitcoin transactions to finalize will be impractical for medium to large value purchases."
~ Hal Finney December 30, 2010

Lightning Network - enable fast transactions among participating nodes and has been proposed as a solution to the bitcoin scalability problem.
