There's something special about an online space where you can feel comfortable with nothing to do, or where you can feel comfortable with nothing but a few others. So many games, online experiences in general, whatever, throw us into the action and keep it going, almost out of fear. There's a level of trust, trusting players to appreciate an environment, a movement system even with nowhere to go; and trusting them to form their own memories of it, to be drawn back by that and not just by a reward system.

hate.net is rewarding. The gameplay is just plain fun, the art is damn cool, the atmosphere perfect. But it's each ending, what it has to say about the online spaces we remember, forget, abandon. I think that's it's most rewarding aspect.
