I really tried to like it but just can't get over the endless number of mundane puzzles, pointless drawn out dialogue, and repetitive griding.

A delightful little indie gem that can be a little rough around the edges.
I enjoyed my time in Bloomtown and hope I'll get to come back for another summer - be it in a sequel or a DLC. The game does a great job of capturin the atmosphere or titles like It, Stranger Things, Boy's Life, and Stand by Me. The narrative and characters are imaginative and engaging enough to keep me hooked. Bloomtown also doesn't shy away from difficult topics and can get surprisingly dark at times - something I appreciated. There are plenty of adventures to be had in this small Illinois town and quite a few references to be discovered. The devs definitely put a lot of attention into the details of this world. Another plus are the combat mechanics that fuse solid turn-based-tactics with Pokemon-esque demon catching. This is all wrapped in delightful pixel art that is up there with greats like Owl Boy, and good sound & music. The only negative I found while adventuring is that the game can be a bit obtuse at times and could use a bit of polish in its tutorial and game-log department. Also, there are certain sequences towards the end of the game that feel a bit unfinished - but this is nothing that a few patches can't fix.

If you find the game's theme at all appealing, I can only recommend buying Bloomtown. It is worth its price.

Man.. talking about a missed opportunity. What a shame, I really liked the demo, too. Anyway, I could write a long, detailed review about what the game is missing and where it has its shortcomings but considering peoples attention spans these days, I will simply let you know what is good about the game.

That is about it. Whoever was in charge of the narrative needs to check themselves into a psych ward or reevaluate their style.

Bloomtown: A Different Story is a combination of Eastward and Gravity Falls when it comes to mysterious story, amazing graphics, powerful music and likable characters. The game has a lot of funny moments, dialogues and discrete references to pop-culture.

The most important thing is that there is no time limit stress associated with main quest completion. You can take your sweet time enjoying the summer holiday.

NOTE: The recent patch added manual saves! Lack of saving anytime was one of the main issues why players left a negative review or even stayed away from this game at all.

The guitarist from Shrezzers made the music for this game. That's pretty sweet.

Despite the charming aesthetic and inoffensive core gameplay loop, I really can't tolerate the incredible amount of trivia unrelated to anything in the game, none of which has any manner of learning opportunity whatsoever, and the seeming majority of which result in immediate failure of whatever side quest or stat gain opportunity without recourse. Nothing pulls me out of engagement with a game more than the game effectively forcing me to stop playing and google something in order to succeed.

If this is something that is also a bridge burner for you, dear reader, I would advise you against purchasing. If that is not bothersome, you probably will enjoy this game just fine!

Five hours in I can say that I've enjoyed this game. I like it, not love it.

Pro's:
- Enjoyable atmosphere (spooky / retro)
- Enjoyable design (refreshing!)
- Good interface / user friendly inventory system etc.
- Good NPC dialogue.
- Clear map and useful fast travel.
- Decent story and gameplay.

Con's:
- I hate the battle music. It's very out of place with the tone of the game. I would go as far as to say that it's annoying and even embarassing. It cannot be turned off or changed.

- Some quests and dialogues go on too long.
An example: the 'Find the missing child (Sarah) quest. It starts out as intriguing but it goes on for a very long time. I lost interest. Especially in the Underside mansion part where you have to find a key. It's tediously door after door, room after room, most absolutely irrelevant. It's meant as a puzzle, but they dragged it out too much. I was ready to quit when it turned out there was a nearly non-visible side cave in a saferoom that you couldn't really see at all, and the key was there. You couldn't see that entrance, so good luck finding it and wandering aimlessly for hours on end... Not my idea of fun.

- Game over-guides in simple things, but under-guides in important things (like finding the key), up to a point where it's sometimes unclear. Like when the quest-info states: "Gather your crew and go to the Underside". So, I tried to gather my crew by talking to them, calling them, go to their houses etc. And in reality, you don't have to gather your crew at all, they gather automatically when you go into the Underside. Sigh.

Conclusion: Good game if you can buy it for +- 12 to 14 Euro's or Dollars, but please don't pay the full 24 Euro price like I did. It doesn't feel like it's worth it for me. I also came to understand it's a pretty short game, so the price is too steep in my opinion.

Strong start, but then it just fizzles out and gets repetitive. I keep having quests get bugged out and I've given up on the game entirely.
