In Darklight Breach, we want both the player’s and enemy’s ships to feel integral to gameplay—not just as static settings where combat takes place. To that end, ship construction has been a major focus, and recently, we’ve revisited our assumptions about how ship power should work.

Our first pass at a ship power system was modeled after FTL, specifically the concept of a global power pool that stations draw from to function. While this initially seemed like a solid approach, it created issues for enemy ships. If your squad infiltrates a room to disable an enemy weapon station, where do you target the power source? Do you have to take out every generator on the ship?

To address these issues, we’ve updated our power system to be local rather than global. Stations are now either powered or unpowered, and to ensure every active station has a generator nearby, power no longer passes through walls.

We believe this change will give players a new objective when boarding enemy ships while also adding an extra layer of strategy to ship-building decisions.
