One of my favourite games I own is SPORE but I havent seen anyone playing it recently this game is dead

Could I mod Spore if I bought/play it on Steam?

So long story short, I was only able to play this game for about 3 hours, during this 3 hours, I got messages that whenever I would save my progress, it would say something like "Save failed, shutting down spore" I lost some of my progress and it was kinda bad but whatever! It was fine, until the second time it happened. Basically when I opened up Spore after the next crash, the intro played, it asked me to register, it was fine.
