IMPORTANT: For those with existing ships
Of course nothing special needs done for brand new characters. But what about your existing character's ships? This process is the same as any custom ship mod.

Upon simply downloading the mod... nothing will happen to your existing shipworlds. So you could try this with a new character to see if you like it (and delete it if not) without danger to your existing characters current ship.
But DO NOT attempt to upgrade your existing ships
. Once you've ultimately made your decision, it isn't too difficult to get a shipyard for your existing characters.

First to go /starbound/storage/player/ and backup your shipworld(so there is no fear of loss)
. By "backup" I mean copy the file to another location. You could even just copy the entire /starbound/storage/player/ folder if you prefer(so your characters are also backed up). Of course this isn't a terrible idea before any point you are going to install a mod you aren't sure of.

Then go in game and remove EVERYTHING from your ship... everything you want to keep anyhow. Put in on a planet somewhere. The process is much easier if you're using one of those "persistent container" mods because you can just move the containers with everything still inside. Either way once you're done, exit the game.

Then to back into /starbound/storage/player/ and delete your shipworld.
Don't fear... you backed it up in case you want to go back later
. Assuming you have multiple characters, here is how you know which is which.

Ideally have your folder set in "view as details" mode so you can easily see the last modified date. Otherwise you need to check file properties. Anyhow the last modified .shipworld file is the last file that got saved... aka the last character you where logged into. Really though it doesn't matter because you might as well just do this for all of them and not worry which is which.

Go back into the game and log into your character. Since you don't have a shipworld anymore... Starbound will generate a new one! You now have the shipyard with all the ships. They're all upgraded to the level you had previously. So the process is complete.

Maybe that's too much to read for such a simple process. TL/DR: version

Backup ship.
Move stuff off ship.
Delete ship.
Load character... gets new ship. And cake. Delicious, moist cake.

--edited to reflect improvement--

Now the reverse would work too. If you remove the mod(after having updated to the shipyard) and delete your shipworld, you'd go back to having a vanilla ship.

If you simply removed the mod... you'd still have the shipworld. A few mechanic fixes(for crew count) would be undone but nothing serious.

However if you remove the prerequisite mod (or play on a server without the prerequisite installed), hylotl platforms(by eLe) would turn to dirt. As would the invisible blocks surrounding the ship. That's what happens when you place mod tiles and then delete the mod... you get dirt but otherwise everything is still usable. So no serious risk is involved.

But also consider that the objects defined by that mod would disappear from the world and become PGIs within your inventory.

If you removed ONLY this mod and kept the prerequisite mod, you'd still have a shipyard. If you upgraded without this mod... yeah your ship will get messed up so don't do that.

Although I'm a little confused. Typically I'd think removing this mod means you don't want a shipyard. That IS a part of your ship now. The shipyard is effectively your ship.

If you want ONLY a ship, you need to do basically the same thing you did to get a shipyard.
1. Take your stuff off the ship - anything you intend to keep.
2. Close Starbound
3. Unsubscribe.
4. Delete your .shipworld file again.
5. Load Starbound(without the mod) and it will generate a new ship for you (again). Only now you have a vanilla ship.
6. Put your stuff back.

If by chance you've upgraded to T9, your character will need something like the T9 mod instead of this one. Vanilla only goes to T8 and thus it won't know what T9 is - therefore you'd need some sort of mod to fill in that information.

Now I am afraid to even test this. Know why? (THE CAKE IS A LIE!!!!) I dunno which is worse, the pun or quoting G.L.A.D.O.S. Or was it, um, crap, forgot her name! Testing this out soon as 17 gigs of info finish backing up.
So this DOES work with race mods? (Im using the kitsune one, uses default hytol ship)
