Left 4 Dead 2

Left 4 Dead 2

8 Player Lobby
This Mod and 8 Player Coop (more info and making it work)
*** this mod does not allow you to "play" with 8 players in coop mode, it just allows you to create a 8 player lobby in L4D2 coop or realism, and to do so it had to change the Start Voice Chat button and the Start Game button in the L4D2 lobby, so to start a lobby you will need to use the button under the Lobby Text Chat box at the bottom left corner ***

(see the 1st screenshot in the preview panel of the description, and you will see the Start Game button in the lower left corner)

im guessing ppl are here cuz they tried this and it didnt work, or they think it didnt work, so i will explain further.

How to Use the 8 Player Lobbies:

- L4D2 main menu go to Mutations.

- Change mutation to 8 player lobby and then Play Online option.

- Create a lobby with the option at the bottom.

- Hit the Edit Game Settings option in the lobby.

- Change Mode to Campaign so when you start the match, other players can see it in the regular Campaign and Play Online options game listings.
(if you set the lobby to public)
*** make sure to do this last step, or other random public players cant join ***

- Then hit the Start Game button, which is now switched places with the Start Voice Chat button, so start the lobby in the bottom left corner under the lobby text chat box.

- and thats it!

again you still need to find a Steam Group Server to use that allows 8 player coop, otherwise it will get the Full_Game error, or install Sourcemod and the necessary plugins into your own game for Local Host to work, this mod only allows 8 ppl into a L4D2 Lobby, not into the actual game server cuz that has to be done on the servers side.

change the Server Type setting in the lobby from Official Dedicated to Steam Group Server, and it will allow the lobby leader to pick the server from his/her group list, so they can choose 1 that has 8 player coop. (just dont let all the other players vote to start, or it will pick a random server that might not have 8 players for coop if the lobby counts down)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
or if you dont want to use this 8 player lobby and just make a regular 4 player lobby, you can go to Campaign on the L4D2 main menu, then Play Online option and make a lobby like normal that are 4 players.

just use the Mutation mode for when you want an 8 player coop lobby.

but the Start Game button is still always switched with the Start Voice Chat button in your L4D2 lobbies.

if you want to have your Single Player and Local Host options run with 8 players in coop, then check the comment on my profile, it goes to a couple packs i made for our DG website that has the Sourcemod stuff and plugins like Superversus and requirements, so players can copy and paste it into their games to use for Single Player or Local Host

http://duskgamers.com/index.php?threads/l4d2-sourcemod-metamod-plugins-for-players-last-stand-compatible.932/

*** just make sure to read the guide and readme info before you start, and dont worry its not one of "those" links lol ***

just beware Local Host matchs are notorious for having bad ping for all the players connecting to the host, mainly cuz residential internet connections dont have good enough upload speed to support a server, so if your friends are far away from your physical location then they will have bad lag

so if your Local Host doesnt work with friends you will have to find a Steam Group Server that allows 8 players, so you want to change the Server Type in the Lobbies Edit Game Settings option to Steam Group Server, then when you start the game as the lobby leader you can pick a server to start your lobby match to from the Steam Group Servers List

*** just dont let all the other players vote to start, or it will pick a random server that might not have 8 players for coop setup and enabled ***

great finally after months to fix 8 slots, it seems workin gnow with latest update, ty:steamthumbsup:
Geek Ultra 3 Apr, 2021 @ 5:03pm
how do you take a break when playing with 8 human players? i was able to run it smoothly but we cant take a break. is it because the game reads the lobby as a 4v4 pvp match where 4 players should always be active?
@ Geek Ultra - o crap now that i think about it thats a good question, it wouldnt surprise me that it locks you out of the Take a Break option like its running Versus or something from the lobby slot trick, i still havent used the Break option yet or had a chance to get that many friends playing to test it

last i knew it shouldnt have anything to do with Sourcemod and/or its plugins, and i can always use the Break option while using this so it shouldnt be the SM plugin packs
@ massacre - lol yupp, thankfully theres some talented and generous ppl over at the Sourcemod site / Alliedmodders, so even tho the original community dev (modder) is gone and no longer supporting the SuperVersus plugin and some other ones needed to fix L4D2 lol, there were others that came to save the day and get it patched after the Last Stand update broke a lot of stuff

otherwise all i did was collected all the necessary plugins to run Superversus in L4D2 from a Windows PC, and a few other good ones we use to fix some stuff or just allow us to change some other stuff, and organized it all into the proper folder structure so its 1 easy copy and paste for users to get in installed into their own games

oh no, I put the steam in the D: instead of the C: what bad can come from this and how do I fix it
lol still wondering if this is a joke about the D and C . . .

but if not no worries, if you used our pack on the DG site, all you have to do is go back to where the Steam folder was copied into what your D:/ drive is, although thats usually the disk drive, but it shouldnt mess anything up, it will just make an extra copy on a drive you dont need it on

then copy it again it the correct place in the C:\ then Program Files (x86) folder

although after the last L4D2 update it broke the plugins again :tera_enraged: but once i can get the updated stuff ill repack it

Hello Tom, your guide is great, very easy to follow. Thank to you I'm having a lot of fun with my group of friends.

Anyway, I was wondering which one of the plugins last l4d2 update broke, can it potentially crash the game? (Cause I've been experiencing some very annoying crashed whenever I'm loading up a new custom maps chapter). Can I temporary disable it? I'm hosting a local server, not a dedicated one btw.

Beside those already in your pack I'm using Gear Transfer, Respawn Rescue Closet, Real Zoey Unlock and Survivor_AFK_Fix[Left 4 Fix].

Thanks again and keep up the good work!

yupp no prob, its the SuperVersus L4D2 plugin for Sourcemod that runs the 8 player control and was the main thing that broke again recently, im just waiting to see if the rest of the bugs are patch, otherwise i have a plan to try another plugin with Superversus to get all the options

also there was a couple other plugins that got Gamedata updates, that go with the plugin file, i think the Survivor Bot Select or Chat Select, and the 8 Player Bug Fixes plugin extension im still hoping for a fix for
nice yeah you can mix and match Plugins usually but only do 1 or 2 at a time, that way if it turns out a new one you add conflicts with the operation of another plugins purpose, then you get crashes and errors or strange behaviors, so its good to make sure to play test a campaign between new plugin adds

i wanna say the SuperVersus plugin fixed the AFK bugs you get, but using the other one shouldnt cause issues

Hi Tom, thanks again for the reply. I've been trying to host a dedicated server on the same machine lately, and for the couple of first day it's working great, smooth as butter and crashing pretty much not happening at all. But, my server is currently experiencing some weird stutter and high ping spikes for players connected, even my self while my internet has no problems in downloading or surfing the web. My rig is above average too (I think), CPU usage never go above 50% while hosting and playing at the same time.

Can you help me pin point the cause here?

aw damn, yes with Local Host options in a game or trying to run a dedicated server from your PC, or even a 2nd PC just for the server, the biggest issue is Ping

which comes from the internet provider you have, and a few other factors:

so 1st make sure your PC is connected directly to your Router with a Ethernet cord, dont use Wi-Fi to connect the PC the server is running on, otherwise even with a 100MBs download and 10MBs upload connection, using wifi your only getting 1MBs upload speed and up to 50 MBs download, also a ethernet cord doesnt have constant fluctuating parameters being a hard line connection, so it helps keep consistency as well

2nd limit all other programs using internet activity while your using the server and/or playing

-
but unfortunately no matter how much you do there is a good chance your Residential internet connection wont be able to upload info fast enough and send it to the other players with a 10MBs upload speed, let alone Commercial Internet connections are set up on a priority gateways

so the short and thick of it is. . . the kind of distance a dedicated server PC running a dedicated game server can reach while reliably connect players with less than 100 ping, is way greater than a personal PC running a game server on a personal internet connection, meaning players will have to be pretty close to your physical location to play with less than 100 ping

Thanks Tom, I've limited the connection to my sv to just around Asia and turn off some plugins, the sv back at running smooth again! Some custom maps on my server is part of the cause too.
good call setting the sv_region, it should help make sure ppl in your area are picked when your using the matchmaking to get players

yes definitely, you have to be careful of some of the custom maps for L4D2, building a L4D2 map can get much more complex and detailed than say a square CSS style map, so lower quality maps can be uploaded with any number of bugs / glitches in them

and running one of those maps from a server could potentially damage the hardware running it, depending on the type of hardware your PC has, or if you rent a Dedicated Server as well, so avoid the ones with known bugs / crashes
whenever i see a new map i do a play through myself, stopping once and a while to check the L4D2 console if i see anything weird happening, to see if theres graphic rendering errors, and also having a hardware monitor program like MSI Afterburner running on my 2nd monitor

so i can see if a certain part of a map has a big problem that makes my CPU or GPU run extra hard to load the area, or my PC taking a lot of RAM to run the game, for example if you have dropping FPS problems and the game lags, its a good sign something is up and you wanna check your hardware, and that can usually tell you why its happening or at least how its stressing your PC

if you want to check it out we have a Custom Maps List for our DG servers, and all these maps are solid with no big issues, so you can be sure i also found the L4D2 maps in this list to be good to game
