Large Ship Design Tutorial for Survival - No More Bricks!
By Splitsie
This is a series of videos that goes through how I design ships when I'm playing in survival. There are many more tricks you can use if you're building in creative but I enjoy the challenges that come with designing in survival.

These videos show the whole process from start to finish with all the little mistakes I make along the way some of which are possibly handy to learn from :)

If you've got any questions about the content here just ask on the guide or on the videos on YouTube.

Part 1
This video focuses on laying out the core of the ship to avoid the dreaded brick/borg cube
Part 2
We start adding some flair to the outside of the ship to give a little bit more interest and slightly less utilitarian look
Part 3
In this video we finish off the outer armour of the ship and start to realise there were a few things missing at the start...
Part 4
In the final video we paint the ship and take it up into space and as a final goodbye to the brick we throw it at an asteroid, with some interesting results!

I was inspired by this tutorial to make the best brick possible: https://steamproxy.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2062238030

So...

what you're saying is that if it's cube/ rectagular prisim, don't paint it red?

Bricks have their place - like when you need something that is purely functional, but I like spending huge amounts of my time making things pretty :P

But I like bricks ; n ;
One of my favourite ships is literally brick shaped on purpose

There's always time for cosmetics - even if it falls to the ground, it still looks better as it explodes!

For me, there's enough margin with the atmospheric and hydrogen thrusters that if you enjoy making things look pretty it can be done, even while keeping the ship functional. I admit that once you add the pretty stuff you lose some efficiency, but resources are so abundant that a little inefficiency is worth being happy with the design :)

There's no time for cosmetics when you are building on a planet. ;-; Make it prettier and it falls to the ground.

Are you suggesting I snuck into your game and copied your ship?!? Because I would never *cough* do that, nope, not me! ;)

I was actually pretty happy with the way this turned out, despite a significant lack of forward planning and building it in survival there isn't much I want to change when I go back and look at it each time.

That ship has the exact same look as my epiphany. 2 pontoons reach forward, a large hydrogen thruster on the center/back, and a white green paint job!
jk i never uploaded it

Thanks for taking the time to give more detail :)

I can understand why you don't like YouTube guides, we each have our own learning styles and that one doesn't suit you.

The broad topic I was trying to cover was that of design, from my point of view being a form of artistic expression, design doesn't have a list of facts or rules so I tried a different approach.

My more specific beginner tutorials probably fit your desired style better, but with over 300 hours you probably won't need that information. If I get to the point of covering more advanced topics hopefully you'll give those new videos a chance as they may be closer to what you're after.

Again, thanks for giving genuine critique, most people would have left it and since I'm still fairly new to this stuff all feedback is useful to hone my skills :)
