Hey, I'm not a pessimist... I just fail to see the good in things most of the time.

Erm... not sure if the miner's are stupid, or they are under poor management. But usually mining refined stone with swords isn't a good idea.

Get them to mine the rocks and ore with Pickaxes... or kill them all with fire.
