How to obtain the fabled Purple Zo
By Kerma
The Purple Zo eludes many and constantly squeaks it's way out of the shoe's grasp. How do you wrangle such a magnificent creature?

First and foremost, the Purple Zo is at the end of the game, after the "Train Tracks" level. If you don't want any more spoiled, don't continue.

That is unless your screen is big enough that you can see the next sentences and pictures regardless and your eyes have already drawn to them, in that case it is too late to save you.

To prepare for this, you're going to need 5-200 gems depending on how much the game hates you. If you're 100%ing don't worry, you don't have to spend all your gems or hoard all your gems to get the 100%, you don't even have to collect them all for it to count. Just get enough on your travels that you have a safe amount at the end of the game.

After you beat the "Train Tracks" level, you'll be on a beach. You can relax a bit if you want, but to get to the Purple Zo you're going to need to go right. Eventually you'll see an arcade machine sitting on a rock. This is how you get the Purple Zo.

DO NOT CONTINUE TO GO RIGHT OR ELSE YOU WILL LOSE ALL CHANCES TO GET THE PURPLE ZO! ONCE YOU GET THE APPLE OF FORTITUDE YOU HAVE LOST ALL CHANCES!

Digger
Interact with the arcade machine. It costs one gem to play. You are now entering the world of digger.

To get the Purple Zo, you need to get a score of 10 in digger. Digger is a sidescrolling retro game where you play as a miner in a banana suit who's determined to get to the top right of the screen. You have to jump your way past obstacles and reach the open area in the top right to get 1 point.

In short, you have to beat the level 10 times. Seem easy?

Upon getting 1 point you'll realize that the level is pretty much exactly the same, but things are slightly sped up. Speeding up is only 50% of the challenge though- you may not have noticed, but some blocks are randomly displaced. This is true randomness as any block that isn't the starting platform or walls and ceiling can move in any cardinal direction once. This happens to 0-3 blocks per point (the 0 is probably just an inner block wanting to move and not being able to). Additionally, sometimes blocks can just straight up disappear.

But no matter what, it's possible, right? No. There are no safety checks to see if the level is possible at any time during your play. So at any time the level could just become unplayable and you have to do it all over again.

This can happen as early as point one,

or as late as points 7-9.

Basically digger is a test of patience and luck, and partially praying that the game doesn't hate you. This is why I said you might need 5-200 gems- while I doubt you'll get an impossible pattern 200 times, you could be here for a while.

Sometimes though, it's in your favour. The game decides to throw you a bone sometimes and makes speedrunning points easy for a while.

Tips and Tricks
So because of the random BS in digger, there isn't much in the way of conventional tips or tricks you can institute to get a higher success chance. However, there are a few things that you could use to your advantage:

  • When you complete a level, the enemies don't "reset" positions. You can use this to your potential advantage by waiting to complete the level until they reach the edge of their platforms, and hope it traps them on a 1 tile square so you don't have to deal with them.
  • When the game speeds up it gets way easier to move, however the enemies also move faster. But due to the fact that the game slightly favours your movement over theirs, you can slip past a few enemies if you need to when normally it would kill you.
  • The game does not calculate "potential movement" in kill factors at all, just the current tile things occupy. You can be right next to an enemy that will kill you in one "tick", but if you're in a jump arc or jump out of the way you're perfectly fine.
  • Extremely rarely a block will just disappear or move from under an enemy and they will fall to another place. Sometimes this makes the level incredibly easy, and sometimes it's an instant loss.
Movement
It might be odd that I talk about the most essential part last, but it's mainly because there's the most to talk about. Movement in digger is extremely important, mostly because the movement sucks so hard that you have to constantly think about tick rates, jump arcs, and if you're going to just randomly slip off the edge instead of jumping.

You have a jump height of +2 blocks, and you move 1 spot per tick left and right while holding down the respective buttons. You can cancel out your jump by stopping your hold when you're mid jump to gain less height or distance.

Jumping is the hardest part of digger, and from experience I just have one important tip to share:

HOLD JUMP BEFORE MOVING!!!!

Digger loves to make you slip off an edge, usually making you die or lose ground. This is because sometimes it decides to prioritize your moving left or right over jumping. The easiest way to combat this is to press and hold jump slightly before your movement key, just so your jump is queued first. This is not an issue with shortening your potential distance, as long as you do it fast enough. The only problem is that this window gets faster and faster the more points you get, so watch out during the higher point values.

There's something else I want to bring up: jumping on blocks above you.

The platform on the lower left section of the screen actually has a possible jump from the bottom right of it to the block above it. In this specific example it's not necessary at all, but sometimes it will be (and this is the only screenshotted photo I have of it). You want to position yourself under the block you want to jump onto, jump and hold the direction you need to go around it with, and when you're on the square next to it, quickly double back. You'll slide on top of the block quite easily with practice. This makes a lot of formerly impossible setups possible, along with potential shortcuts making things easier.

Well that about covers the main things I have to say about the game, I hope this guide helped a bit because digger gave me so much trouble I was stuck on it for an hour or so.
