Introduction

As a ruler you will often find landless lords from other kingdoms in your court, hoping to become your vassal. This can happen at random for the most part, but it is also heavily influenced by their personality, their experience with their last kingdom, your renown, and how many unassigned fiefs you have.

Trying to get other lords to join your kingdom is heavily dependent on renown, number and location of fiefs, kingdom's total troop size, affection, your charisma, your persuasion level, and mere chance.

Lord Personality
All vassals have different values and personalities, ranging from peaceful inland patrol to restless warmongers.

Best lord personality to recruit is Good-natured & Upstanding.

Avoid the lord with this personality which are Pitiless, Quarrelsome, Calculating & Debauched.

Regarding release
If defeated in battle by the player, some lords take being released as honorable act. Others, however, will take it as an offense, stating that "You would rather see me free and humiliated than in chains." You gain relationship bonuses after you release them, and you get your chance to beg them to let you go in the next battle (with a big cost of relationship points). However as mentioned before, some take being released as dishonorable, resulting in a relationship penalty on your next meeting. The best way to find out who hates being released is by releasing every caught lord and keeping track. Also, when capturing a lord, he will make a certain statement such as "grant me the honors of war" or "I yield, call off your dogs". Usually when this remark is "honorable" they will like being released. When they offend you they are likely to hate you for it.

Regarding war
Some lords hate wars. They stick themselves inside the kingdom, battle with bandits, and do nothing else. If that lord becomes marshall of the kingdom, the campaigns will often be touch-and-go without any progress every time. With aggressive lords, it's the exact opposite. Lords do tend to support their friends, if a lord has many friends within his faction, then his friends will attempt to help defend his fiefs, whereas if a lord is hated, they will not defend him by their own choice.

Regarding foreigners
The player is always of foreign birth, and this attracts hate from some xenophobic lords. If you try to marry a lady, some lords will say you're foreigner and have no rights to do so. The result is nearly -10 relationship penalty.
In depth info and numbers

➀ Relationship points awarded when meeting the lord again after releasing them. You will always get an initial +2 relationship for releasing them, or -5 for taking them, prisoner.

➁ Martial lords do not care if you give another lord a fief when they have 3 fiefs themselves. If they have less, they will be angry each time you give a fief to another vassal. Your relation with them drops over time automatically when they have no fiefs and it stops when they have at least 1 fief.

➂ Cunning lords do not care if you give another lord a fief when they have 3 fiefs themselves. If they have less, they will be angry each time you give a fief to another vassal. Your relation with them drops over time automatically when they have no fiefs and it stops when they have at least 1 fief.

➃ No matter which personality it is, they always be annoyed if you grant a fief to a lord they are in odds with. Note: Frederick of Mettenheim will display selfish characteristics when made a lord. His trait is officially "Mercantile" however the -1 relations every time a different lord is given a fief shares the traits with dishonorable/sadistic. For these purposes mercantile can be considered another sadistic/bad tempered lord.

Note: Lords with good personalities are more valuable, but they're also harder to get as your vassals. They will be the ones who will most often follow the marshal, defend their kingdom and help other lords. Bad reputation lords will constantly be deteriorating relations with the other lords in the kingdom, causing the chance of them deserting or being exiled to increase. Opposite happens with a good personality lord, the more he remains in a kingdom the stronger link he will have towards it.

Note: bad-tempered lords will start with -3 relations with everyone, including the player. Their max relation with the player is 97 as well

Note: good-natured and upstanding vassals relation with you will be affected by honor. For every 10 honor change, you will gain/lose a relation point with them, meaning that if you gathered 200 honor, you will have 20 relation points with all upstanding and good natured lords, even if you never met them. Same goes for negative honor, they will dislike you more the more dishonorable you become.

Note: good-natured and upstanding personalities will not drop relation with the player if the player is able to raise his relation with them to 100 at some point.

Note: another important factor is families. Lords within the same family will:
➳Not try to denounce, indict, or attack each other.
➳Ask player for help when one of them is captured.
➳Pressure or support romance of player and a lady, if the lady is member of that family.
➳Try to denounce other families aggressively.

Note: Monarchs in Prophesy of Pendor don't have any family, not even a wife. They don't have personality neither, but they behave in a similar manner to a Martial lord
7 Personality of Vassal
➳ There are many ways of knowing which personality a lord has depending on what he says when speaking.
➳ If you forget which personality a lord has, you can also click on their conversation portrait to open their character notes page.

Companions / Heroes
Your companions can be made into lords/vassals and given towns, villages or castles.

Lady Matheld

Noble: Yes
Relationship Status: Widow
Personality: Martial

If elevated to lordship in Warband, Matheld will recruit Nords to fight under her and in her fiefs.

Lady Ymira

Noble: No
Relationship Status: Single
Personality: Good-natured

Ymira is not considered a noble, so promoting her to lordship will hurt your relations with most of the nobles of Calradia. If given lands, she will recruit whatever troops are available in her properties to fight for her.

Lord Firentis

Noble: Yes
Relationship Status: Single
Personality: Upstanding

If elevated to lordship, Lord Firentis will hire Swadian troops to fight for him.

Lord Jeremus

Noble: No
Relationship Status: Single
Personality: Good-natured

Jeremus is not a noble birth, so granting him fiefs will costs some relation points with most of the lords of Calradia. He will then recruit whatever troops are available in his lands, regardless of nationality

You fucked up with a lot of the banners. Mirchaud is supposed to have the unicorn, that stripey monstrosity is Grainwad's. Gharmall got Etrosq's crest for some ungodly reason, Despin got Montewar's, Gutlans got someone else's (he's supposed to have the swans)... Reichsin's got fucking Kastor of Veluca's banner! You don't even see that one outside rebellions!

Completely wrong you need the bad ones as well to build relations with the good ones and also to protect the good ones from being indicted the quarelsome lords naturally loses relations with their monarch which is you or your claimant which is good buffer for indictment even good lords can lose relations enough to be indicted.
Also practically the dishonarable and quarelsome lords are stronger statistically so idk how well you really thought of this guide because you could just spam count haringoth type lords into your faction and you will auto delete anyone because they have king level renowns.

"Note: Frederick of Mettenheim will display selfish characteristics when made a lord."

This was taken directly from the Prophesy of Pendor wiki and does not apply for a general guide.

@Nubslayer Telling the difference between upstanding and good natured sure is annoying. In my experience lords will have their own traits beyond the personality. Some will pick fights with others, will follow some marshals but not others, etc.

Also, pick at the very least one Martial lord to be your Marshal (if like me you became king so you don't need to boss the realm around [like the Native kings]]. He will do the warring for you and take over the whole map.

Beware who you pick though, some marshalls are lukewarm, while others are warmongerers that will take a town, go home and the moment he sets foot home will call another campaign to take another town.

In my opinion only recruit good natured/upstanding lords, it saves a lot of trouble when awarding fief. Also Ctrl `, type cheatmenu and talk to a lord to see their personality (shows in chatbox) and you can close it via Ctrl` nocheatmeny

I think you can also determine personality types of a lord by asking villagers about rumors, and occasionally they'll say something like, "They say that Emir Nuam is a good man and treats people living in his lands decently. That is more than what can be said for most of the nobles."

@[RA:HHR-5] Rain I leave the martial personality out as I was not sure of where they stand back then. But thanks to @RedBaronFlyer good & reliable info, mate.

So I research for a while & find out that Martial lords do not care if you give another lord a fief when they have 3 fiefs themselves. If they have less, they will be pissed each time you give a fief to another vassal. Your relation with them drops over time automatically when they have no fiefs and it stops when they have at least 1 fief.

I updated this guide so you can find this info under In-depth info and numbers

@Sturmhorst, I did some research on the Mount And Blade wiki & you got a point. I saw a info mention this :C

Note: Certain aspects of most NPCs are randomly generated at the beginning of every new game. These include all family lines other than the parents and siblings of young NPCs, or children of older NPCs; personalities; and initial fief ownership.

Generally you can know by how they great you or what they say after you beat them in battle and let them go or when you see them again after beating them.
