The call over gesture will be given the first time a trade is made that gives the 'Pickle Pee' reaction. Homeward bone is just the easiest.

Can you do the rope verion and the normal version for fire bombs? as in trading black firebomb then a rope black firebomb?

Call over! gesture will be given to you after you trade anything for the first time. I always get the Hello carving first, trading for a Alluring Skull and get the gesture as I try to trade something else.
