Working of the team

Fractured Space is a game based around teamwork. You work with a bunch of friends and strangers to make other friends'/strangers' lives miserable. However, if you don't work well with your team, you and they will be the miserable ones. It's very common for the team that works together to steamroll the enemy.

This guide will help players -- old and new -- understand how to work well with your teammates, and ultimately bring you higher up in the brackets.
The Ship Selection Screen
Assuming that you have queued for a multiplayer match for yourself, it is important to note that you are likely to be matched with strangers. You won't know what kind of ship they will like to play. But, don't worry; some of them will show their fervent ardor towards one ship by picking it and hitting ready. They won't change even when its clear that their selection may not be the best choice to work with the rest of the team. If you're really lucky, you'll end up with multiple teammates doing much of the same.

Is there any hope?

Don't panic now, comrade. There are ways to circumvent this horrible happening!

Try engaging in conversation as soon as the team forms to establish a friendly level of communication. By simply saying, "Hello!" you have opened the possibility for your team to be a little more social in a match. The more open they are to talking, the better they will communicate! That means they could feel bad about picking a bad ship at your expense and switch to something more suitable towards your team.

Of course, this won't always work. If you feel like your current MMR does not represent your true skill level, you can always form a premade group. Be warned, though. Premade groups are generally bumped to higher brackets.

What kind of ships should my team pick?

While this game hosts countless possibilities and combinations to an effective team, it is my personal recommendation to stick with a healer, a heavy defense, and 3 attack vessels (keep special attack vessels like cloakers/snipers to only one slot). You can tweak the formula to your liking, and find how it will fit your playstyle. Remember, a good team composition is vital to a great game!
The Start of the Game!
What happens in the first part of the game can really set the ball in motion. If a team coordinates well and plays to their strengths, they could manage a 2 level gap before the first gamma -- or, even win the game. But, it could also be the first step in going down a very dark, miserable (and salty) road.

Controlling the middle mines is crucial to getting the edge over the enemy. If you manage to get both middle mines at the beginning of the game, that will put your team at 4 mines to the enemy's 2. That being said, covering your teammates' rear ends as they go for the middle mine is extremely helpful. The methods of assisting your team vary across the ships, but prioritizing the team over yourself is always the way to go!

For instance, if you see your teammate is getting attacked by an enemy, throw chivalry out the window and work together to beat the snot out of that ship.

Remember: Capturing mines earns more than getting kills, so don't dive and leave your buddy alone at a station!

The First Gamma

Congratulations, Comrade! You made it to the first gamma! Stalin would be proud. Now, I'm sure you're completely baffled on what to do here. Well, don't worry, I'll explain it to you!

IF YOU TAKE ANYTHING FROM THIS GUIDE, LET IT BE THIS: SHOW UP TO GAMMA EARLY. IGNORING GAMMA UNTIL THE LAST TEN SECONDS WILL HURT YOUR TEAM BADLY.

You should have your team play on the safer side as you approach the one minute mark. Then, have your heavy defense ship jump in to turn the enemy team's heads -- in the case that they're not busy defending/being chickenheads and actually showed up to gamma early as well. Pay attention to the ships vital to the enemy's longevity. Is their disruptor hovering off to the north end of the field? Have your cloak ship jump in from that point to render the disruptor...

.. Disrupted.

This will likely send the enemy team on defensive, and more than likely have one or two of their attack vessels turn to engage the threat to their precious and delicious heals! This is an excellent time to focus enemy targets to systematically wipe out their team. By holding tab, you can right click an enemy's name on the board to automatically enter "Attack XxX_Watchman_Lover_69_XxX" in your team's chat. Or, if you're a wiz with your fingers *wink wink* you can quickly type the ship you want your team to target, so they can help you gun that sucker down before they can even realize how rustled their jimmies are!

At this point, your team was so amazing that they already secured gamma. Depending on whether or not you're holding the majority of mines, you can choose to keep the enemy engaged in a brawl in gamma. Beefed up with the gaseous might of a fireball below, you and your team will tear through the enemy while still gathering more resources. However, if you have the same amount/less mines, it's recommended to scoot out at your convenience to do something productive.

Keep in mind that when first Gamma rolls around, the respawn times are pretty short, so it's going to be a brawl.
The Long Haul (Abridged)
Wow, Ivan! Your team hasn't surrendered yet!

That means either you have more than one teammate who would rather suffer defeat than surrender, or your team is doing well! But, keep in mind; this is just the beginning!

We won/lost first gamma, now what?

It's important that your team has an idea of what to focus next. The only thing more dangerous than jumping home in front of a watchman is a team that doesn't know what to do. Spreading out and going back to controlling the mines are a first choice in pinging a suggestion. However if your team is dominating the enemy, you might suggest pushing for the enemy team's FOB and possibly concluding the game early!

However, doing so presents a clear risk to your own defenses. Should your team get wiped out in the attempt to push the enemy base, it leaves a large window for the enemy to recap mines or even your own forward station.

So, unless you're confident in the decision, focus on keeping the majority of mines, taking down the enemy as they try to reclaim their land, and keep your team from being fractured into space!

Remember: resources and captures are what win games. Kills do contribute to resources in a big way early on but not very much later so map control is everything.

Wow, it's second gamma already!

Keep your pants on, Comrade. Understand that the second gamma is more dangerous than the first. The respawn timers are considerably longer, and don't leave much of an opening to change the tide of battle once gamma is active. With that in mind, the strategy is not much different than before -- only the stakes are higher.
Finishing the Game!
Now if you've been listening so far, Comrade, you've already got the enemy team on the ropes. Or, maybe they have you on the ropes. That's not a good place to be, Ivan. Shame on you.

I'm sorry.

It's okay, Comrade. There is always hope of turning the game around with some focused coordination. The third gamma opens a multitude of ways to win a game. You can collect the buff and jump to the enemy base. You can cap their forward stations and find a parking stop in their home base while they're fighting over gamma. Heck, you can cap their forward stations AND THEN jump to gamma to trick them! Now you're playing mindgames, Ivan!

Regardless of the strategy, the third gamma buff usually punctuates the ending of a game. The team who wins the buff becomes (stupidly) stronk and can jump straight into the losing team's base. And, for the most part, the losing team is wiped out since they all died trying to secure gamma III.

That's it? It's over?

That's right, Ivan! By working with your teammates, you showed the enemy team what-for and earned a victory! Pat yourself on the back, you've earned it! Now, go out there into the deep void of space and have fun!
