Get Steam to track hours played when using Unofficial Patch
By Mxmlln
I decided to make this quick guide after struggling to get Steam to track the hours played for Vampire: The Masquerade once I had applied the Unofficial Patch 9.5 (Basic)

Make sure you have done this first
Once you have installed the Unoffical Patch ensure you have added the Steam launch options as below, so that you can easily lauch the patched version of the game from your Steam library:

- right click on the game in your Steam library
- select Properties
- on the General tab, click "SET LAUNCH OPTIONS..."
- type in: -game Unofficial_Patch
- then hit "OK"

The juicy bit
Once you have done that navigate to the install location for the game (...\Steam\SteamApps\common\Vampire The Masquerade - Bloodlines):
- right click on Vampire.exe and select Properties
- click on the "Compatability" tab
- Tick "run this program in compatability mode for:" and select "Windows Xp (Service Pack 3)"
- Tick "run this program as administrator"
- Click Apply then Ok
- Run the game

After that Steam should show you as running the game in your Friends list and therefore track your hours :) Hope this helps someone!

NOTE: Only works when launching the game through the Steam library, Steam will not detect the game running, and won't count hours, if you use the desktop shortcut created when installing the patch to launch the game. At least for me anyway.

Have fun!
Have fun playing this great game!!

If this guide was helpful for you please can you leave me a rating, thank you :)

Have you tried what Very Ape has done below, just setting the launch option only? Or running it without compatibility mode?

It DOES appear to tracking my play time but... I don't seem to be able and open the Overlay of steam, for chating and all of that.

Can you help me? I just installed: VTMB: Clan Quest Mod and the latest Unofficial patch.

It crashes my game for some reason

Running the game without compatibility mode works for me. Otherwise the steam overlay doesn't work if I try using it. Weird I know, but I am just glad it works. I also don't run the app as admin. All I had to do was use the launch option.
