How to Survive Level 5

It is possible to survive level 5 without getting hit by the EMP on all difficulties. This guide includes two videos that show you how to do it on difficulty hard and on difficulty insane.

What's helpful in this level is card number 21. This card will increase the speed of your ship by 5%. It's not much but helps a little.

Hints

Always keep your eyes on the emp!
Scan the top of the screen for incoming towers. Attack towers as soon as possible. You want to avoid a situation where three or fours towers are firing at you at the same time.
Move underneath the tower and wait for the emp to close in. Avoid the emp by moving in circles when the emp is close to you. Avoiding the emp too early often results in the emp touching you.
Yes, you can save humans while avoiding the emp. I would say you could even rescue all of them on hard difficulty but that's not possible on insane difficulty.
Once you got the hang of it, use the same tactic to collect all stars.
You don't necessarily need lasers on hard difficulty but they become necessary on insane difficulty. Unfortunately the number of lasers dropped by destroyed towers is random. If you are lucky you can collect three lasers in the first group of four towers. But I still only use the lasers on towers that are capable of firing downwards. Try to destroy towers that can only fire horizontal with you guns and spare the lasers for towers that can fire downwards.
Once you figured out how to play this level it's actually fun. And collecting all medals on this level helps you collect huge amount of stars that you can use to buy upgrades in other levels.

Thanks. I spent a while trying to cancel the EMP with shields, mega bombs etc before I grudgingly accepted that you just have to deal with it! Once you learn the trick of going in small circles to avoid it, it becomes second nature and achievements are not as hard as they first appear.

Extended tactic: move around the EMP and rush towards a hostage when EMP's heading away from it. the emp is pretty slow when turing around so that opens quite a big window.
