Introduction
Hello, and welcome to the official Beyond Dimensions Workshop guide !
We intended to make modding as easy as possible, anybody can give it a try !
Create your own story files
In this section, you're going to learn how to write your own stories and cutscenes, the same way the developers did.

Where ?
On PC And Linux :
Go to your Beyond Dimensions installation folder (default : Steam/SteamApps/common/Beyond Dimensions), then, go in Beyond Dimensions_Data/StreamingAssets/workshop/texts.
On Mac : Go to your Beyond Dimensions installation folder (default : Steam/SteamApps/common/Beyond Dimensions), right clic Beyond Dimensions and select "Show Package Contents", then go to Contents/Resources/Data/StreamingAssets/workshop/texts

What ?
Copy the copy_and_rename_me folder, and rename it how you want.
Inside, you'll find a file named : title - copy_and_rename_me. Change the copy_and_rename_me part. (For example, if you want the name "test", rename it to title - test.)
This will be the name showed in the game.

Now, we're ready to write !
You have a list of text files :
  • 1Introduction : The introductions, showed when the game starts, before the main menu.
  • 2Dungeon : The dialog between the player, S.A.M., and a skeleton.
  • 3Military : The dialog between the player, S.A.M., and a guard.
  • 4Dinosir : The dialog between the player, S.A.M., and a tea-drinking dinosaur.
  • 5-1NewWorld : The dialog between the player and S.A.M., when entering the new world.
  • 5-2GoodEnding : The dialog between the player, S.A.M., and a scientist, during the good ending.
  • 5BadEnding : The dialog between the player, S.A.M., and a scientist, during the bad ending. Here, the word <NUMBER> will be replaced by how much energy is needed to get to the new world. It isn't mandatory.
Each file must end with an empty line, and is provided with instructions and examples of the different ways you can use them.

We personally used Notepad++ to create these, but any text editor will work.

But I only wanted to write an introduction !
You can remove any file you want. It will be replaced by the official text instead.
So, if you only want to edit 1Introduction.txt, you can delete all the other text files. (But you MUST keep the title file.) and the dialogs will be replaced by the official ones.

Let's get testing !
You've spent several seconds writing a story, and suddenly realized : "Maybe I should check if everything works before spending more time writing !"

To enable your story file, go in the options in the main menu, and in the workshop stories option, select your story.
Once this is done, you can start a new game to test it out.
Create your own characters
In this section, you're going to learn how to create your own characters for the game, NOT the same way the developers did.

Where ?
On PC And Linux :
Go to your Beyond Dimensions installation folder (default : Steam/SteamApps/common/Beyond Dimensions), then, go in Beyond Dimensions_Data/StreamingAssets/workshop/spritesheets.
On Mac :
Go to your Beyond Dimensions installation folder (default : Steam/SteamApps/common/Beyond Dimensions), right clic Beyond Dimensions and select "Show Package Contents", then go to Contents/Resources/Data/StreamingAssets/workshop/texts

What ?
Copy the copy_and_rename_me file, and rename it how you want.
This will be the name showed in the game.

Now, we're ready to edit !
The game divides the spritesheet into sprites when loading it, taking into account its width and height. It means that you can change the size of the texture, as long as the sprites are in the same relative position.
If you're confused, you'll be fine changing the size as long as the width/height ratio stays the same.

SPRITESHEET EXPLANATION

Let's get testing !
You've spent several seconds changing some pixels, and suddenly realized : "Maybe I should check if everything works before spending more time drawing !"

To enable your character, start a new game, then, press the "change character" button.

Once this is done, you can start a new game to test it out.
Let's upload !
You made it !
You've made a story, or a spritesheet, that you're proud of, and you want to show it to the world.
But how exactly do you do that? Well, we've got you covered.

In the main menu, press the Workshop button. You'll be sent to the workshop uploader.
On the left is the story uploader. Select your story, check if every file you want is there, and press Upload.
On the right is the spritesheet uploader. Select your spritesheet, and press Upload.

Once an upload is over, the game will open the Steam Workshop page, so you can edit the description, title, etc...

My page is empty !
Sometimes, the page opens a little too soon. Simply refresh the page, and you should be fine !
