No, in fact Pender arrived well before Hood and McLaws further to the south. However, Pender had the misfortune of getting taken out by a Union artillery shell before it was his turn to lead his division forward. Pender was in the process of trying to find out why Posey and Mahone hadn't fallen in line with the attack-in-echelon progression that had suddenly stalled and was threatening to derail the entire assault when he got hit. Unfortunately Pender had not set up contingency plans for what his division should do in the event its commanding general was incapacitated. As for Posey and Mahone's brigades to Pender's immediate right, Posey basically lost control of his brigade when his regiments became hopelessly scattered around the Bliss farm in a protracted large scale skirmish battle with Union pickets from Hays and Gibbons’ divisions. Mahone for reasons still not fully understood, simply REFUSED to join the attack!

Pender late for the show or just plain knackered coming to the field?
