"The essence of Russian spirit is evident from the actions of defenders of the fortress Osovets. This is the story of the people, who for seven months defended it succesfully from vastly superior German forces. However, Germans finally decided to use gas on the 6th of August 1915 to bring the stout defenders down. Considering the possible effect of such a powerful chemical attack, the Germans believed the garrison to be dead and so launched a full offensive over no man's land. The attack consisted of fourteen batallions of landwehr, which consisted of roughly seven thousand soldiers.As the German infantry approached the outer fortifications of the fortress, they were met with a counterattack by the remaining defenders of the first line - the remnants of the 13th Company of the 226th Infantry "Zemlyanksy" Regiment, just over 60 people in total. The Russian troops were shaking, coughing wildly, the cause - horrific chemical burns to their lungs; their faces - wrapped in bloody rags. Skin was of greenish hue, with cornea darker than usual, as is the case with severe chlorine poisoning. This surprise attack decimated the German troops as they retreated in horror - 7000 men against a hundredth of that number.seven thousand soldiers.

i saw the doc history of this event the Russian soldier fights till death these guys were greatly gassed with the worst chemicals there were at such times but still they fought hacking up clumps of blood

emerged from the trenches and launched a counter-charge against the Germans. Unprepared to actually meet resistance and terrified by the ghastly visage of Russian soldiers donning cloth face covering soaked with blood, hacking up their own internal organs while still charging, the German troops fell into a full rout, abandoning equipment and defenses to escape the undead offensive. Though gaining ground and a victory, the gas was still lethal to most of the Russian defenders, the majority of whom later died from the chemicals and other injuries, and the Germans eventually captured the fortress.

For anyone stumbling across this and wondering about the historical context:
Osowiec fortress in Russia (now Poland) was holding out against a fierce German siege. In an attempt to eliminate the defenders, the German forces deployed chemical weapons, knowing the Russians did not have gas masks to properly protect themselves. After a heavy artillery barrage and deploying the gas, the German troops advanced, expecting to find the Russian defenders either incapacitated or dead. Instead, as they approached, the Russian defenders, who had tied cloth around their faces in an (unsuccessful) attempt to protect themselves
