Osowiec fortress in Russia (now Poland) was holding out against a fierce German siege. In an attempt to eliminate the defenders, the German forces deployed chemical weapons, knowing the Russians did not have gas masks to properly protect themselves. After a heavy artillery barrage and deploying the gas, the German troops advanced, expecting to find the Russian defenders either incapacitated or dead. Instead, as they approached, the Russian defenders, who had tied cloth around their faces in an (unsuccessful) attempt to protect themselves
