Weapon & Armour Guide
By XT
This guide explains the different lasers and grenades and shows you the defense offered by each kind of armor so that you can make intelligent purchasing decisions. Many armors trade physical defense for laser defense (or vice-versa), so it's important to know what you will be getting for your credits.

Introduction
This guide covers all of the lasers, grenades and armors in the game. You may note that all costs listed are pre-tax. You start out with a 100% tax on Earth, which means everything will cost twice as much as shown in the shop. You can reduce the taxes by doing missions to gain favor, or by finding illegal shops in space with lower taxes. Armours are divided into three tiers: basic, average and good/advanced. For some reason, the game calls the highest tier armours and helmets 'advanced', while it calls them 'good' for robes and boots.

Helmets and boots provide mostly physical defense, robes provide mostly laser defense, while armour usually provides a mix of both that can be tilted in either direction. Armour can not be changed during combat, but only via the equipment closet located on your ship.
Lasers
Laser upgrade shop These are the four laser upgrades. You start with the basic stun laser and have to find the rest. All laser upgrades are sold by a man on the left side of the Earth starbase. These sales are not taxed.

It's not very intuitive, but you don't actually need to equip the laser items to use the laser upgrades. Equipping better lasers appears to lower your attack stat, but it doesn't appear to affect the damage any. Each new level seems to do approximately twice as much damage as the one before.

Grenades
All of the grenades except atomic grenades can be found in most shops. The names are pretty much self-explanatory. Each type is bound to a different (unchangeable) key on the keyboard. If you accidentally blew yourself up when you pressed the wrong key, this is why. In the table below, 'key' is the letter you press on your keyboard in order to throw it, so you press 'E' to throw an explosive grenade and so on. While these are mentioned in the item descriptions, they're not mentioned in the screen that lists the main controls, so I mention this so that people don't find out the hard way.

Helmets
Helmets, like boots, provide mostly physical defense until the highest tiers. There are a few defensive trade-offs among the more expensive helmets and this should be coordinated with your choice of armour in order to get the defensive stats you want.

Robes
Robes are your primary source of laser defense, until the highest tiers. There are no trade-offs for upgrading your robe, other than losing the 2 physical defense from the starter robe.

Body Armour
Body armour is rather expensive, but provides the highest stat totals. There are many trade-offs to be had. If you want to balance your defensive stats, you will want the armour with high laser defense, as there are two types of armour that primarily give physical defense (helmets and boots), but only one type of armour that provides mostly laser defense (robes).
