General Gameplay Tips
Hello, my name is Rance, I am several times King Player and almost all challenges (3 left) are done. (I`m too lazy to finish them all) For proof visit official website and check All Kings list. You will see my name several times.

This is my guide to this awesome game. With this guide, anyone can become King, philanthropist, playboy, millionaire…

First, excuse my English as it is not my native language, but I think you will be able to understand pretty much everything. :) I wrote this for my friends and after translating and some correction decided to upload it here. Enjoy!

WARNING! SPOILERS ALERT This game is very challenging, thus very fun. I enjoyed beating it myself without any tips and help. If you like hardcore games – DO NOT read this guide! Use your head and be Man enough to do it yourself. Some say it`s too random, but I say – you`re too casual, because it is almost impossible to die in this game if you know exactly what you`re doing.

General Gameplay Tips:

• VERY IMPORTANT. Learn every time you die. Try to avoid it next time.

• Create every character with the aim to unlock 1-2 or more heritage. Do not just clear dungeons for nothing. Start with Antidote, Healing potion heritages, mushrooms (very important). After that: weapons and armor, and finally Knowledge heritages. Then comes everything else.

• You MUST use different character builds to get all heritages and challenges. Remember that.

• It is okay to die several hundred times. No joke.

• DO NOT kill snails, do not light up torches, do not disarm traps, etc. Try to level up as SLOW as possible. Why? Because this way you will clear more dungeons (monster level = yours), and will be able to collect more stuff to fight strong monsters.

• Press “S” to search for traps, but its 10 times better to take Keen Eye skill. Auto search for traps (you will never die in the trap, I promise you) and hidden rooms, no exp for finding traps. As slow as possible, remember?

• If you just entered level and did nothing else, you can always go back.

• Place boulder on top of the ladder – level is cleared. Use pickaxe on the wall to get boulders. Avoid strong monsters using this feature.

• You can sell all your stuff at the start and buy some good ring for example.

• Identify only jewelry and wands if you need money, or you`re not going for knowledge heritages. Weapons and armor usually cost less than identify price. Sell arrows without identify.

• Use “Rest in the inn”. After that you can reset any dungeon, buy new stuff in the shop, also increases chance to meet boss at the end of the dungeon. Sometimes you want to meet them…

• Humans use fire, undead – ice, orc – lightning. Counter them by wearing amulets of elemental protection. Dragons use ice too.

• Collect and keep in backpack different jewelry for different situations. Example:
Put on Amulet of Nine lives in case of inevitable death.
Frost amulet while fighting a frost dragon.
Use amulet of ghost form to get out of traps (ignores traps, except magic fire trap).
Ring of sustenance while enchanting with amulet of Ench. Etc.

• Always learn literacy and keep good scrolls and wands for bosses and other strong monsters.
Wand of Melting or wand of excavation is capable to one-shot any boss.
Scroll of dislocation – good escape from dangerous situation. Better keep 2-3 as you can teleport to the next square.
Scroll of Invisibility – god mode ON.
Scroll of recharging – recharge your wands!

• Use scroll of blessing to repair any piece of equipment. Also can make blessed armor and weapons, which allows them to be enchanted twice. To make blessed piece of jewelry one should search for blessed scroll of enchanting.

• Yes, Blessed items hold two enchantments.

• Visit official website (http://rogue.epixx.org), and check database. Learn effects of all wands, spells, rings. Knowledge is your best weapon in this game.

• Blessed jewelry is much better than ordinary.
Ring of familiar summons stupid red whelp.
Blessed Ring of familiar summons Blue Dragon! Feel the difference.

• Tame bears, they are very good tank companions. To tame a bear first you must use scroll of polymorph to turn him into a rat and then throw him cheese. Be careful – you can miss. Try throwing other stuff to other monsters…

• As you reach level 10-12+ be prepared to face big monsters. In addition, you must have all basic resistances: immune to instant death, blind, confuse, curse.

• Do not hesitate to use all your artillery in a pinch.

• Enchant equipment in the town. This way you can choose which one you like.

• Do Crafting quest (In repair menu in town) It`s not that hard, but you will be able to create equipment you need. Even blessed.

Easy crafting materials:
Tithril ore – smash WALLS and boulders out of the walls with pickaxe. Smash other boulders if you want pickaxe to break real fast.
Bearskin – is bearskin. Kill some bears. Sometimes orcs drop it too.
Flexweave – kill spiders, disarm spider net.
Hardwood – destroy any wooden object BEFORE using it.
Scrap – IDENTIFY any weapon or armor and throw it to the wall.

• Once again VERY IMPORTANT. Learn every time you die. Try to avoid it next time.
Strength Warrior
Strength Warrior
(try to kill me if you can)

This is the best caharacter for new players because it forgives mistakes more than other.

At lvl 1 (without buffs):
STR 8
AGI 6
VIT 8
CHA 6

As this build is not about damage, you should increase VIT first, not STR. Durability comes first.

At lvl 20 (without buffs):
STR 10
AGI 7
VIT 11
CHA 7

Equipment:

For new players I recommend 1H + Shield build, but the final decision is yours. 2H is fun too, but I think it is for more experienced players. You can switch too.

Head: Plate Helm/Chain Helm
Body: Plate Armor/Chain Armor
Weapon: Hammer (Highest damage)/any 1H Weapon
Shield: Metal Barrier

Jewelry:

try to switch your rings and amulets according to situation. (sometimes you have to do it in the middle of the fight)

So you will need:

Set of elemental amulets – amulet of fire ward, amulet of frost ward, amulet of shock ward
Amulet of Nine lives – put on in case of inevitable death
Amulet of Ghost form, Reflection vs strong melee fighters/archers
Amulet of Free action/Protection – for regular use

Rings:
Ring of Brutality – good for low levels (1-10), less useful later
Ring of Fortitude – always good to have at least one for any character, str warrior needs 2 imho.
Ring of Haste – if you don’t have Amulet of Free Action
Ring of Regen – good for low levels, doesn`t help much when you have 50+ hp, even blessed
Any Rings of status immunity – useful, but meh…

Possible Talents:

1 Heroic Charge – Killing mages and archers now a bit easier. Must have
2 Crushing Blow – Main damage skill for close combat. Must have
3 Shild Bash and Dual Wield (2 talents) – Personally I don’t like this skill, but you can try it out. Stuns target for 1-3 turns. Will always miss most of the time – that’s why you need Dual Wield. Works much better with it.
4 Common Literacy – must have for any character, ability to use wands and scrolls – so good. Must have
5 Keen Eye – forget about traps.
6 Strong Will/Sixth Sense – I will survive~ ©
7 Literacy: Celestial – even more durability. Heals, buffs, etc. Like a Paladin.

My usual choice and order: 5,1,2,4,7,6

Gameplay:

Advance slowly. Try to avoid fighting multiple enemies at the same time. If you meet mage or archer – use corners, doors, walls to draw them closer, after that use heroic charge. If you meet boss – try to switch your gear accordingly and do not hesitate to use all your artillery: best wands, scrolls.
Agility Rogue
Agility Rogue
(now you see me… ops, you`re dead)

Very fun to play build, but you can die easily too. If played correctly, agi rogue is unstoppable.

At lvl 1 (without buffs):
STR 6
AGI 8
VIT 8
CHA 6

AGI is top priority as everything depends on it: damage, parry, dodge, skills.

At lvl 20 (without buffs):
STR 7
AGI 10
VIT 11
CHA 7

Enchant your equipment with +AGI (15+ AGI with buffs – ok).

Equipment:

In this build you can use 1H weapon in two hands (yes, without shield, just 1H weapon) or Dual wield. Both very good. For new players I recommend 1H because for dual wield you will need one more talent and 2 claws in good condition. Probably you will die before acquiring that.
Mouse over your AGI and check your +AGI modifier(+2,3,4,5). Use armor accordingly.
Head: +2 – Studded Helm, +3 – Leather Helm, +4 – Leather Cap, +5 – Nothing (hood)
Body: +2 – Studded Armor, +3 – Leather Armor, +4 Padded Armor, +5 – Nothing (Cloak)
1H Weapon: Sword (+2 Parry mod), Claw (3 Parry Mod)
Dual Wield: 2 daggers (+2 Parry mod), Claw and Talon (+3 Parry mod)
Yes. With high AGI you will be naked.

Jewelry:

Same, try to switch your rings and amulets according to situation.

You will need:
Set of elemental amulets – amulet of fire ward, amulet of frost ward, amulet of shock ward
Amulet of Nine lives – put on in case of inevitable death
Amulet of Ghost form, Reflection vs strong melee fighters/archers
Amulet of Free action/Abjuration – for regular use, activate shield only in really bad situations

Rings:
Ring of Brutality – useless, I think you rarely miss with high agi
Ring of Fortitude – must have at least 1, I prefer 2
Ring of Haste – if you don’t have Amu of Free Action
Ring of Deflection,Evasion – good for early/mid game, at lvl 20 you won’t see any difference
Ring of Regen – good for low levels, doesn`t help much when you have 50+ hp, even blessed
Any Rings of status immunity – useful

Possible Talents:

1 Blade Flurry – Close combat skill. More AGI = more hits per use. Terrible terrible damage with good weapons. It`s possible to deal 50+ dmg with one use! Must have
2 Keen Eye – Traps? What`s that?
3 Silent Move – Second best talent in game imho, after literacy. Do not learn this talent before 9-12 level. Its ONLY good with VERY high agi, like 10-12 +. It becomes permanent invisibility. Must have
4 Common Literacy – must have for any character, ability to use wands and scrolls – so good. Must have
5 Heroic Charge – less useful in this build because of Silent Move, but still good.
6 Strong Will/Sixth Sense – sometimes helps
7 Dual wield – best used with Claw and talon, very high damage. 4 enchantments on weapons + blade flurry – overpowered, no?
My usual choice and order: 2,1,3,4,5,7(6)

Gameplay:

Always fight 1 on 1 or in tunnels. With high agi and silent move you can easily sneak near enemy and one shot him with surprise Blade Flurry. (I`m serious, even dragons die out of surprise) You can descend stairs and even reset dungeons in Stealth, just use Silent Move and click on stairs. That means you can always go back or wait while your enemies kill each other. Also it is possible to hide behind corner or door during fight and use SM. Told you it`s OP.
Archers and Mages
Heavy Archer
(one shot – one kill… oh well… maybe two shots…)

I like archer a lot, the only problem is arrows. Always not enough and not too much space in inventory.
Best with Blessed Enchanted Repeater.

At lvl 1 (without buffs):
STR 6
AGI 8
VIT 8
CHA 6

AGI is top priority here too. Our damage depends on AGI.

At lvl 20 (without buffs):
STR 7
AGI 10
VIT 11
CHA 7

Enchant your equipment with +AGI, also +D3 Physical Damage for Bow or Repeater is very good, like 20+ dmg per shot. (15+ AGI with buffs – ok)

Equipment:

It`s kinda unexpected, but we don’t really need dodge and we don’t use parry. If our enemy reaches us before we kill him, we will probably die anyway. So I recommend wearing heavy armor for max durability.

Head: Plate Helm/Chain Helm
Body: Plate Armor/Chain Armor
Weapon: Repeater(insane damage) or Recurve(bow)

Jewelry:

Same, try to switch your rings and amulets according to situation. Amulet of free action is very good for archer. Two shots per turn.

Rings:

Ring of Accuracy – very good, even at high levels, because blessed ring gives +1 AGI
Ring of Fortitude – one ring for archer is enough, blessed of course.
Ring of Haste – if you don’t have Amu of Free Action
Ring of Deflection, Evasion – useless for us
Ring of Regen – good for low levels, doesn`t help much when you have 50+ hp, even blessed
Any Rings of status immunity – useful

Possible Talents:

1 Aimed Shot – Main damage skill, depends on AGI. Must have
2 Keen Eye – You know… people talk about traps.
3 Quick Shot – You can move before shooting. Sometimes useful, for tactical escape mostly, because damage is low. Try it.
4 Common Literacy – must have for any character, ability to use wands and scrolls – so good. Must have
5 Multi Shot – Personally, I think it`s bad. You shoot like 2-3 arrows per shot(remember, there is never enough arrows) and deal very low damage. Not worth it.
6 Strong Will/Sixth Sense – sometimes helps
7 Steady shot – No. Just find ring of accuracy.
8 Dark Vision – very good, Must have
9 Trap Master – high level monsters and bosses don`t care about traps, so it`s useless imho.
My usual choice and order: 2,1,8,4,3,6

Gameplay:

What can I say… try to shoot your enemies from long distance. It`s great to have minions, you can order them to tank while you shoot. Actually, with plate and decent jewelry, you will be quite durable and monsters will die from 1-2 aimed shots from you. Avoid melee fights and keep track of your ammo. Hunt down Prince Altren for his equipment. (Plate helm, plate armor and repeater with perfect enchants for you) However, killing him won`t be easy.

Stealth Archer
(…but then I took an arrow to the knee…)

Even stronger version of agi stealth rogue. Stats same as Heavy Archer.

Equipment is same too, exсept for helm and armor:

Mouse over your AGI and check your +AGI modifier(+2,3,4,5). Use armor accordingly.
Head: +2 – Studded Helm, +3 – Leather Helm, +4 – Leather Cap, +5 – Nothing (hood)
Body: +2 – Studded Armor, +3 – Leather Armor, +4 Padded Armor, +5 – Nothing (Cloak)
Also, you can switch bow with 1H weapon for melee fights.

Possible Talents:

1 Blade Flurry
2 Aimed Shot
3 Silent Move
4 Common Literacy
5 Dark Vision
6 Strong Will/Sixth Sense – sometimes helps
7 Keen Eye
8 Steady Shot - now doubles damage if used from stealth, but it`s not really that high. I think Aimed Shot is much better.

My usual choice and order: 7,2,3,5,4,1(8)

Gameplay:

You can scout in stealth and decide which weapon is better to deal with monsters.

Mage
(IDDQD)

Strongest class in game, in my opinion of course. Difficult to level up, but easy to play after.

Don’t try it, if you don’t have Seventh Talent at the start and 1-2 of core spells:
Any Orb Spell (for damage)
Divine Reach
Mirror Image
Plane Shift

I think by the time you unlock Seventh Talent you`ll know everything yourself.
So GOOD LUCK!
Bestiary
Information is power.

Here I will give you some info about monsters and bosses.

Remember: Invisibility scroll is ultimate weapon vs all bosses.

Big Monsters

Mamalob (Giant Spider)

Weakest of all big monsters. Just huge and scary. Dies from 2-3 good hits.
Dungeon dweller - Possible to meet her in dungeon. In addition, she can be summoned if you stand in spider’s web for quite some time.

Papalob (Giant Spider)

Looks same as Mamalob, hangs out with bunch of small spiders. Dies from 3-4 hits.
Boss encounter (that means it appears only when you cleared dungeon)

Bandit Orc Boss

Bunch of orcs (5-6) with one tough one. Nothing special.
Boss encounter.
Weakness: AoE spells.

Dead bones pirates

Group of skeletons. Nothing special.
Boss encounter.
Weakness: Turn undead scroll or spell.

Cave Bear

Big brown bear, your best friend if you tame it. Durable and got haste, very dangerous.
Dungeon dweller, sometimes 2 bears on the same floor.
Weakness: polymorph + cheese to tame, also usually dies to archers and mages before reaching them

Very Big Giant Snail (forgot his name)

Only looks big and strong. Durable, but weak attacks, that’s all.
Dungeon dweller.

Infernal

Big red demon with a whip. Very strong. Durable, haste and heavy damage, do not let him near you.
Appears as dungeon dweller (solo) and as Boss encounter ( with 3-4 demons or impalers with him)
Weakness: Banish Daemon spell or scroll.

Blue Dragon

Blue dragon with horns. Somewhat durable, and uses frost magic.
Will shoot frost orbs from distance and attacks in melee.
Dungeon dweller.
Weakness: Frost element resistance will help you.

Banshee

Scary ghost-woman. Seems she has some insta-kill effect attack, so you`d better have immunity or try to one-shot her.
Weakness: Turn undead scroll or spell.

Lich(Death)

Flying skeleton in purple hood, 2-3 hits and ice magic, not very strong.
Weakness: Turn undead scroll or spell

Real bosses

You can meet them after clearing dungeon at level 10+

Dawid the Paladin

Paladin in heavy armor with Shield and mace. VERY durable, stuns a lot.
Strategy: Shoot him from afar with bow, wand… or have immunity to stun if you want to fight him in melee.

Ranger Satyr`Dae

Lonely archer, very weak.
Strategy: Just get near him and hit him 2-3 times.
Sometimes wears nine lives amulet. Be careful.

Swordmaster Logar

Lonely warrior with 2H Sword. Very high damage.
Strategy: Try to avoid getting near him or kill him fast.
Sometimes wears nine lives amulet. Be careful.

Archmage Gyffendal

Lonely wizard with very good staff. Shoots spells very fast with good damage.
Strategy: get near and kill him. Very easy.

Beartamer Gareth

Tough warrior with two cave bears.
Strategy: Fight them only 1 vs 1, try tunnels.
Weakness: it is possible to tame both his bears and order them to kill their master ^___^

Master Gifin-Gif

Master assassin with 4 pupils. They use stealth, so BE CAREFUL. Also their weapons are poisoned. High chance to die from just 1 hit, because of bad statuses.
Strategy: Use stealth, invisibility. Lure them one by one to other room kill and repeat. Insta-kill wands and aoe spells help too.

Ice Queen Altara

Mage with 2 Blue dragons. They spam ice magic, so do not let them see you.
Strategy: Same as Gifin-gif. High frost resistance helps too.

Ryan the Trickster

Personally, I hate this mother******. Because you will 100% die then you first meet him, if you don’t know what he is doing. So, you just cleared dungeon and you`re somewhere far from entrance. Boss appears near entrance, right? Ryan starts spawning rats all over dungeon, just like cursed amulet of pestilence. That means if you don’t get to him real quick rats will swarm you and you won`t even see him. If you get near him, he will try to polymorph you.

Strategy: Must have AOE Spells/wands/skills, Dislocation/Teleport scrolls, immunity to polymorph, and insta kill wand to one shot him from distance. Remember that rats do not disappear and you must clear them after killing him. Invisibility is useless! Good luck!

Prince Altren

The strongest boss besides King.
1 prince, 4 bodyguards. Bodyguards are weak and not very dangerous, but Prince himself is real pain in the ass. He uses Repeater(crossbow) and heavy armor with very good enchants. He once shot me for 24 damage through Blessed Ghost Amulet! After death he turns into Infernal!
Strategy: Use everything you have to kill him. Invisibility, wands, scrolls, pets. (He killed 3 bears once too, but they gave me enough time to kill him) Try to lure bodyguards 1 by 1 if possible.
Weakness: If you manage to kill him first, he will turn into infernal and attack his own bodyguards.
Scroll of banishment works great vs demons.
End
That`s all for now.
Tnx for reading and GOOD LUCK!

p.s. I will probably add some pictures later!
p.s.s. If you like i can write guide about unlocking heritages and completing challanges. someday...

Just because someone else mentioned the Polar Bear, the best way I found to do this was to play as a mage, find a scroll of summoning early and upon entering the lair, step away from the corridor/stairs. Summon the demon (which thankfully was right next to the bear and got an instant hit) and then shoot the bear 2x with an orb spell or wand. Killed the polar bear at like level 3 to 5 after having failed multiple times when I was over level 10.
luke85 8 Jun, 2024 @ 7:53pm
Also Magnus you are incorrect. You need to do the young adventurer quest and speak to a priestess there. The quest is available after you step on a hidden trap. You do all that THEN you can type: Mike is rite! and get the keen eye skill. Note spelling and punctuation matters. You literally have to type in: Mike is rite! Exactly. Uppercase m and exclamation point needed. Guess somebody needs their ego stroked lol
luke85 8 Jun, 2024 @ 11:53am
My character was INVISIBLE and yet the fear from the bear killed him. The only reason my best and most badass character died is because of you GreenGo. Failed to mention the fear effect so unless your character has immunity to fear. Invisibility scroll does NOT equal god mode. Very sad that a noob, very new player like myself has to explain that to you who is an EXPERT.
luke85 8 Jun, 2024 @ 11:53am
This is a great guide and I agree with most everything but I have to point out one major mistake you made that I had to suffer for. My best character ever died because of your advice. You said invisibility scroll = God Mode, well your wrong. I had trouble killing the polar bear which unlocks your hideout. I had a good character and lucky enough he found and Identified an invisibility scroll. So: perfect chance to kill polar bear before it kills me. It almost worked. I got polar bear to like 1 or 2 HP and I would have killed it easy but you forgot to mention one important thing. Invisibility scroll does NOT equal god mode if you are attacking an enemy that can cause fear or whatever the effect is.
Magnus 5 Jun, 2023 @ 3:51am
If you type "Mike is rite!" at the start of a run, then you will get the Keen Eye skill.
MobiusBlue 28 Aug, 2015 @ 9:01pm
Archer class is actually just a 'partical mode' from rogue class. with +9-10 agi support. for a 1v1 situation , you can one-shot anyone(including king except gurmur) from blade flurry or just plain silent move crited attack. compare to this kind of ridiculous damage rogue can make in close range, its unnecessary to deal range damage all the time. IMO 'archer mode' serves one purpose in general: luring monster/mobs by some arrows and move out of LOS then silent move finish it/them.

Nice Guide, thanks a bunch! There´s always little bits and pieces to learn...
