Ah, I figured it out: there IS NO WAY to remove the Power-up Icons, but you can trick the game into doing it for you by changing your system resolution to a wider aspect ratio (I did 1600x900). At that point the game decides to move the Power-up Icons for you, to the far right, where they don't cover any part of the map. Then, once you click the puzzle piece on this level, you can restore your system settings to a normal resolution and aspect ratio once again.

How do you see a level without the power-up icons? The hidden puzzle piece on level 3-4 is behind the Power-Ups bar, making it both invisible and unclickable during play.
