Fixing GFWL for windows 8,8.1 and 10 (old not for 2023 version form Steam)
The GFWL that you get with the game is out of date, so you first have to get rid of it, and update to be able to get the game going
so you will want to get into the control program, and then Uninstall a Program

and uninstall:
"Microsoft Games for Windows Marketplace" and also "Microsoft Games for Windows - LIVE Redistributable"

Then restart the PC (Do not Skip these step!)

Now after its deleted download the newer update of GFWL from here:
https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=201134

While you wait for the download you will need to set the account to be able to connect suing GFWL by disabling the "two-step verification"
do so by
1. Log in to your Live accout at https://account.live.com
2. On the left panel click on "Security info"
3. Click "Disable two-step verification"

Now that its downloaded you will want to right click it, and set to compatibility mode set to Windows 8, and run as admin.
then start it and install

if you have a 64 bit system: Then go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games for Windows - LIVE\Client" folder to run as admin and Windows 8 compatibility mode.

if you have a 32 bit system: Then go to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games for Windows - LIVE\Client" folder to run as admin and Windows 8 compatibility mode.

Only if you have 64 Bit System:
Copy all dll files and the dll.cat file starting with xlive from C:\Windows\SysWOW64 to C:\Windows\System32

Restart the PC

Run GFWLClient.exe from C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games for Windows - LIVE\Client for 32 bit systems or C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games for Windows - LIVE\Client for 64 bit systems and log in.

Start the game, if you have any problems try the other fixes in these guide as well

Other Fixes
Before you attempt any fixes, follow these first steps. They are the starting point for most solutions.

  • Run the Windows File Explorer.
  • Go into your Documents folder. Look for the Disney Interactive Studios folder and go into that.
  • Navigate through TRON Evolution > UnrealEngine3 > GridGame > Config.
  • Open the file GridEngine.ini in a text editor.

Now you can follow the specific instructions for each fix, most of which require editing the GridEngine.ini file.

NOTE: You may need to set the Config files you edit to Read-only, to prevent the game from resetting the changes you make back to their defaults.

  • The game won't let me set a resolution greater than 1680x1050. Is there a way to get 1920x1080 (1080p) resolution or higher?

  • Find the line with the text [SystemSettings] in GridEngine.ini.
  • Scroll down until you see the lines with ResX and ResY.
  • Edit the numbers in these lines to the resolution you want. So, for example, ResX=1920 and ResY=1080.
  • Save the changes you've made. The game should now be running at the specified resolution.

Note that the higher the resolution above 1680x1050, the more the targeting indicators on enemies will become offset (instead of directly above them).

  • The unskippable movies (company logos, cutscene of Anon meeting TRON) at the start of the game are annoying. Is there any way to get rid of them?

  • Find the line with the text [FullScreenMovie] in GridEngine.ini.
  • Scroll down until you reach the end of this section. Edit the last 5 lines so they look like this. (Putting a semi-colon ; in front of them.)

    ;StartupMovies=Unreal ;StartupMovies=GamestarLogo ;StartupMovies=PropagandaLogo ;StartupMovies=DisneyLogo ;StartupMovies=Sc1_01_01

  • Save the changes you've made. The game should now go directly to the main menu when you start it.

  • Is it possible to run the game in a Window instead of Fullscreen?

  • Find the line with the text [SystemSettings].
  • Scroll down until you see Fullscreen in GridEngine.ini.
  • By default, the game runs Fullscreen. Change True to False, to set the game to run in Windowed mode.
  • Save the changes you've made. The game should now be running in a window.

  • The game uses PhysX for its physics calculations. By default, the game only utilizes the CPU. If you own an Nvidia card, it's possible to force the game to use the GPU for PhysX. This will likely provide a small boost in performance.

    To make this change:

  • Find the line with the text [Engine.Engine] in GridEngine.ini.
  • Now find the line with the text bDisablePhysXHardwareSupport.
  • Change this setting from True to False.
  • Save the changes you've made. The game should now use your Nvidia GPU for PhysX.

  • The game crashes when I click "Click to Start" on the title screen. Is there something I can try to fix this?

  • Run the Steam client, then open the Steam menu at the top left of the window and select Go Offline. Restart Steam in offline mode. (This is important, because Steam's Cloud Sync feature would interfere with this fix.)
  • Run the Windows File Explorer.
  • Go into your Documents folder. Look for the Disney Interactive Studios folder and go into that.
  • Navigate through TRON Evolution > SaveData > 0xXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX > Save. (The folder starting with 0x will have a different number for every person.)
  • Move the CHECKPT file out of the Save folder, and put it somewhere else.

Now try starting the game. If this fix works, you will lose all of your progress in Single Player and have to start over.

If this fix doesn't work, you can put the CHECKPT file back in the Save folder (overwriting the new one the game created) to restore your progress.

After trying the fix, you can return Steam to online mode again. If the fix worked and Steam's Cloud Sync says there's a conflict with your new CHECKPT save, versus the one it has backed up online, do not download the backed up CHECKPT save. Upload your new save.

  • Games for Windows Live (GFWL) is giving me a "0X80072751" error when it wants to update itself. Is there anything I can try to fix this?

  • In the Start menu, right-click the Command Prompt icon and choose Run as administrator.
  • Type in the command netsh winsock reset and press Enter.
  • Restart Windows.
  • Run the Command Prompt as Administrator again.
  • Type in the command netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt and press Enter.
  • Restart Windows again. GFWL should now download the update.

  • I'm getting this error from SecuROM when I try to start the game: "A required security module cannot be activated. This program cannot be executed (8016)." Is there any fix for this?

If you have a newer Intel Skylake CPU (first made available in August 2015), all games that use SecuROM show this error and will not work.

The only way to fix this issue if you own an Intel Skylake CPU, is to update the BIOS on your motherboard. Contact the manufacturer of your motherboard/computer/laptop/tablet to get the update.

  • The game still won't start. What's something else I can try to get the game to work?

First, simply try restarting your computer. After installing TRON Evolution from Steam: to finalize the installation of the SecuROM DRM the game uses, a Windows restart is apparently required. Otherwise, if you start the game, nothing will happen.

One user reported that if your system locale is set to anything other than English (United States) the game won't start. While changing the locale may get TRON Evolution to start, this will affect other applications and games in Windows as well. So it's up to you if you want to try this.

  • Open the Windows Control Panel.
  • Click Clock, Language, and Region, then click Region.
  • Click the Administrative tab. Now click the Change system locale button.
  • If the selection in the drop-down menu is not English (United States), change it to that and click OK. (Make a note of what your locale setting was before changing it.)
  • Windows will prompt you to restart your computer. Click the Restart now button.

Now try playing TRON Evolution again. See if the game will start. If not, you'll probably want to change your locale back to what it was before.

I have a different issue not covered in this guide, and none of these fixes have been helpful. How can I figure out what the cause of my problem is, and a possible solution?

  • Run the Windows File Explorer.
  • Go into your Documents folder. Look for the Disney Interactive Studios folder and go into that.
  • Navigate through TRON Evolution > UnrealEngine3 > GridGame > Logs.
  • Open the file Launch.log in a text editor.

Scroll down to the end of the log. The last few lines should give you a clue as to what is causing the game to crash, or other problems.

For example, if you see the following:
Log: GNovodexSDK 00000000 Critical: appError called: Assertion failed: GNovodexSDK

It means you need to install the latest version of PhysX from Nvidia's web site. You can download it from here:

I can't seem to get past GFWL on Windows 11. When I install the offline patch, it doesn't let me save, when I install the online one and try to login to my account, I get a prompt that my serial number isn't activated (it's a legitimate steam serial). I'm not sure what i'm doing wrong.

@yosegaman and @Syikumi lunari if you're having trouble getting the game to launch because it needs to be activated: I suggest contacting P4R4D0X and asking for his help because he can guide you through it, if you run into any issue with getting the current activation methods to work. https://steamproxy.com/app/315440/discussions/0/2733047810439073181/?ctp=37

The main GridEngine.ini file you'd want to edit would be located in Documents > TRON Evolution > UnrealEngine3 > GridGame > Config. It may not be there because you haven't successfully run the game yet.

Honestly good point, should maybe mark it as old or remove it ^^
