The game engine seems to make some strange decisions at times. The shortest path is always directly across the road. If, for whatever reason, it can't find any other paths, the that is what it will take.
I'll see what I can do (may require a different path pattern).
I am busy on doing a 4 track train station based on the CR model (extended) but I will get round to it sooner or later :)

Awesome work, I waited for something like this since forever!
Any pedestrian crossing close by will make this (and any pedestrian bridges) useless. The path length is shorter across the road than over (or under) it. Either build away from a junction or remove the crossings.
