Overview

INTRO
Broken Age's Let's Get this Good Time Over With achievement asks that you beat the game in under an hour. This may sound daunting at first, but by moving quickly and knowing what you're going to do 10 steps ahead, you'll come out just fine. This guide cuts out the explanations and details of regular walkthroughs in order to create a time-optimized "task list" for players already familiar with the game.

This guide is going to assume that you've played through the whole game at least once and are familiar with both the layouts of each area and the location of all characters. You should know the world well by the time you complete the game the first time around, but it never hurts to make sure your internal map is polished. Knowing character locations is actually easier than it sounds, since characters rarely move from place to place while you play, even between acts.

DISCLAIMER
Due to the concise and stripped-down nature of this guide, first-time players are advised NOT to use this as an actual walkthrough. Steam user Brittlebear has a wonderful walkthrough guide here for first-timers who get stumped.

TIPS AND TRICKS
  • The Spacebar is your friend. Keep the spacebar held down at all times in order to skip dialogue and cutscenes. This is mandatory for beating the game in under an hour. There are a few points where you won't want to keep the spacebar held down; I will indicate these spots as they come up.
  • Really phone it in when it comes to dialogue trees. Say only what you need to, and then leave. I've included the lines you'll need to say to characters in conversation to save time. You can quickly exit a conversation by clicking outside of the dialogue box, when your cursor shows as an X. "Exhaust dialogue options" means to just click whatever comes up in the dialogue box, either until a certain line pops up or the character has nothing else to say.
  • Use the double arrows. When your mouse is over a door or exit to another area, your cursor will show an arrow. After you click to move your character towards it, the arrow will be replaced by a double arrow. Clicking the spot this time will instantly teleport you to the next room. This is mandatory for beating the game in under an hour.
  • Save often. At the minimum, you should save at the beginning of each side of the story. You'll be loading old saves often after gathering information. I would argue that this is also mandatory for beating the game in under an hour.
  • Start with a practice run. This will help you commit to memory the order in which to do these tasks, making your actual speedrun much easier to remember and work through. It may seem like extra time spent, but it's worth it in the end. And who knows, you may hit it on the first try!
  • Loading doesn't detract from your time. If you need to take a breather or check this guide, make sure you save and quit to menu before doing so. Some users have reported that the game continues to record time even when paused, so backing out to the title screen may be necessary. Having this guide up on another display, smartphone, or having a printed copy is a good idea as well.
  • Some cutscenes can't be skipped. Act 1 Prologue, Act 1 Epilogue, and Shay's Snake Attack are all unskippable, even though the clock will continue to count against you. Thankfully, you'll lose no more than five minutes combined.
ACT 1: Shay
When I did my run for the achievement, I was able to complete this section in about 8 minutes.

PART ONE: BREAKING THE CYCLE
  • Pick Choco Rockets.
    • "Sure. What difference does it make?"
  • Collect Spoon, use on bowl.
  • Perform Friendship Circle, Foreign Body, and (sabotaged) Runaway Train missions (in that order).
    • "We have to defend the Friendship Circle!"
    • "Better suit up and investigate that foreign body."
    • "Let's catch that runaway train!"
  • Get up, collect Compressed Air, unwrap Present and unscrew vent.
  • Inflate Dummy, place in bed.
  • Enter vent, give Star Chart to Space Weaver.
    • If you talk to the Space Weaver after it starts warming up, it'll skip right ahead to the destination, which saves a lot of time. Don't do this if you need to jump down and stitch in your own coordinates.
  • Return to Marek and perform the first rescue mission.
    • If you're really bad at these, consider saving just before each rescue mission. You don't lose too much time if you miss a couple grabs, so don't sweat it.
  • Give new chart to Space Weaver.
  • Return to Marek, perform the second rescue mission.

PART TWO: TAKING OVER
  • Go to Marek, get door access and items.
    • "How are we going to take down the shields?"
    • "That distress call was from Prima Doom? How do we get there?"
    • "How are we going to get control of the ship's cargo boom arms?"
    • End conversation.
  • Grab Spacesuit and Helmet from Trophy Room, teleport out.

PART THREE: CHARTED TERRITORY
  • Take right teleporter to Starboard Passageway
  • Get Crochet Hook from Yarn Pal in Friendship Circle.
    • "Hey, maybe I can fix your back."
    • End conversation
  • Get Whipped Cream Gun in Ice Cream Mountain.
  • Collect Knife from Kitchen
  • Take door to Space Weaver's Room
  • Give Star Chart to Space Weaver, go to Cozy Cluster (Do not skip the warmup sequence)
    • "Fine. Cozy Cluster it is."
  • Inscribe into star chart like so:

PART FOUR: NUCLEAR EARMUFFS
  • Leave through door, go to Teleporter Room.
  • Take center teleporter to Reactor, put on helmet.
  • Enter Chamber (double down arrow works once suit is on).
  • Put Inhibitor on Fusion Orb.

PART FIVE: GRABBIN' GARY
  • Leave Reactor, take right teleporter to Starboard Passageway.
  • Go into space, equip Compressed Air and Whipped Cream Gun, and cut air hose with Knife.
  • Jump up and float over to boom arm controls.
    • Hitting stuff up here can cost you a bit of time. Stay just above needle to avoid collisions and keep the mouse button held down.
  • Pry open control cover with Knife, plant Grabbin' Gary.

PART SIX: EVENT HORIZON
  • Return to the Airlock.
    • If you maintain a high altitude, once you pass the needle you can cannonball straight down to save a bit of time.
  • Return to Marek by taking the Starboard Passageway teleporter back to the Teleporter Room, then take the Trophy Room teleport and pass through Marek's Quarters.
  • Perform the third and final rescue mission.
ACT 1: Vella
When I did my run for the achievement, I was able to complete this section in about 9 minutes.

PART ONE: EXODUS
  • Wake up, go to Rocky, go to house.
  • Walk inside until lights turn on.
  • Collect Towel and Cupcake.
  • Give cupcake to Grandpa.
    • "Split it with you?"
  • Collect Knife, give Knife to mom.
  • Talk to each girl, exhaust all dialogue options.
  • Ask Drink Me girl for water, then ask her again.
    • "Hey, can I have a drink of that water?"
    • "Can I borrow that bottle one more time?"
  • Give water to Fun Size girl, then give her Towel.
  • Put Corset on Jessie, use Knife on dress.

PART TWO: HEAD IN THE CLOUDS
  • Get Ladder from Maggie.
    • "What are you doing, exactly?"
    • "How do you get to the eggs in the high nests?"
    • "Hey, can I borrow your ladder?"
    • End conversation.
  • Collect Knife.
  • Talk to Carol, then give her the Knife.
    • Don't say anything to Carol. Just introduce yourself and end the conversation.
  • Combine Big Cloud Shoes with Ladder.
  • Get Small Cloud Shoes from Twyla.
    • "I really like your outfit!"
    • "Did you say something about shoes?"
    • End conversation.
  • Put on Small Cloud Shoes.

PART THREE: GOLDEN EGGS
  • Go to nest behind Maggie for the first Golden Egg.
  • Shake Fruit Tree.
  • Fall down first hole to right of tree.
  • Jump down to trunk, collect fallen Fruit and Jessie's Egg.
  • Give Egg to Jessie, collect second Golden Egg.
  • Head to Harm'ny's Gate, leave 2 Golden Eggs in bowls.
  • Climb ladder to Throne and talk to Harm'ny for the last Golden Egg.
    • "Hi!"
    • "Can you help me kill Mog Chothra?"
    • "Hey, are you done with that golden egg?"
    • End conversation.
  • Climb down, collect Golden Egg, put in bowl.
  • Get back on ladder to Throne.

PART FOUR: APPLIED CRYOGENICS
  • Collect Stained Glass Sun and Axe.
  • Look at Art.
  • Talk to Curtis for Art.
    • "Um okay? I forgive you?"
    • "Hey, about this art..." then exhaust all options up to "I like how it matches your decor."
    • End conversation.
  • Collect Art.
  • Go to Shellmound, collect Driftwood.
  • Get Bucket from Marshall Dune.
    • "Because you look like a Mayor!"
    • "Hey, about your bucket hat..."
    • "It looks great on you! Very fancy!"
    • End conversation.
  • Gain entry to temple and collect Tear Gas Gun from Dead-Eye Bodyguards.
    • "Hey, can I get you guys something?"
    • "Some more holy tear gas?"
    • "Can I go inside?"
    • "Uh...I dunno. It just looks cool?"
    • End conversation.
  • Give Fruit to Dead-Eye Bodyguard.
  • Go inside, put Art in socket.

PART FIVE: PROJECT MANHATTAN
  • Break Amplifying Quartz and Collect Laser Coil.
  • Replace/swap parts with Stained Glass Sun.
  • Return to beach, fill Tear Gas Gun with chum.
  • Spray girls with Chum Gun, take Perfume.
  • Go to Talking Tree, cut open with Axe, hang Bucket.
  • Go to Curtis' Cabin, make Stool with Driftwood.
  • Show Stool to Talking Tree, take Sap-filled Bucket.
  • Show Sap-filled Bucket to Marshal Dune.
  • Spray on Perfume.
  • Ask Marshall Dune to be in Feast.
    • "I need to enter the Maidens Feast!"
  • Equip Trigger, shoot off 3 of the 4 arms.
  • Let Mog Chothra pick you up.
    • Let go of the Spacebar.
    • Tap the Spacebar once as you are being lifted up.
    • Shove Ladder into Mog Chothra's Mouth.
    • Continue holding down Spacebar.
  • Fire at open mouth.
ACT 2: Vella
When I did my run for the achievement, I was able to complete this section in about 12 minutes.

PART ONE: NOW BOARDING
  • Get up and talk to Knife. Exhaust all dialogue options and take it with you.
  • Collect Bowl.
  • Cut piece off hanging tube with Knife.
  • Connect airflow with tube until Maintenance Panel 36 (the one shown below) pushes out.
    • The connection is random, so you'll have to go by trial and error.
  • Climb tubing and cut it with Knife.
  • Connect Long Tube to airflow.
  • Get into Airlock. You may need to practice this, as the timing is inconsistent. The image below shows the approximate angle at which to reach for these things:
    • Hold out Bowl for Small Arm.
    • Use Small Arm to grab Boot.
    • Use Small Arm with Boot to latch onto Big Hand.
    • Push yourself off into Airlock.

PART TWO: KNOCK KNOCK
  • Go to Marek.
    • In Hall of Missions, push debris aside, but do not replace it yet.
  • Get Marek to unlock door to his Quarters.
    • "Where is this ship headed?"
    • "Can you open any of the locked doors on the ship?"
  • Go through teleporter in Trophy Room.
  • Take long way to Starboard Passageway (Do not teleport there).
  • Enter teleporter at Starboard Passageway.
  • Exhaust all dialogue options at door to Control Room.
  • Answer all three questions.
    • Answer 1: Mister Huggy
    • Answer 2: Please, can we not do this?
    • Answer 3: Purple, Size 4, Polka-dot

PART THREE: MASTER HAXXOR
  • Exhaust all dialogue options with Mom.
  • Save game. Look at picture and make note of wiring icons.
  • Load your save. Grab Fork and then put on control helmet.
  • Pick up Inflatable Shay.
  • Set Kitchen monitor to TACO PILL TUESDAY!
  • Make your way through the rooms, unlocking all the doors until you get to the Hexipal with the flashlight.
  • Guide Hexipal to your door. Try to do this perfectly, or else you will spend a lot of time here.
    • At the Starboard Passageway, fry the first wall panel. When Hexipal reaches it, fry the light source. As Hexipal walks across, fry the two panels at the end.
    • In the Hall of Missions, fry the light source and then fry the wall panel AND the two ceiling lights. When Hexipal finishes fixing the first wall panel, fry the second wall panel as well as the door controls.
    • At the Deck, fry the ground wires. As soon as the upper lights show up, fry them as well, and then fry the panel next to Space Weaver's Room. when Hexipal hops over the control panel, fry the door controls.
    • In the West Hall, fry the wall panel, then switch to the Kitchen and deploy a taco pill. Fry the door controls. Back in the West Hall, fry the wall panel once again and this segment will be done.
  • Switch to Kitchen, set monitor to GOOD MORNING! and deploy cereal. Deploy it once more and pause it at the right moment.

PART FOUR: JURY RIGGING
  • Take off control helmet and head through Hall of Missions. On your way, grab Inflatable Shay from Kitchen.
  • In Ice Cream Mountain, put on Small Cloud Shoes, inflate Shay with whipped cream, and scoop some ice cream from the peak into the Bowl. You won't be able to double arrow out until you lose your Small Cloud Shoes.
  • In Hall of Missions, move debris back in the way and head to Runaway Train.
  • Use Inflated Shay on conductor and do the wave.
    • "Yeah, let's do the WAVE!"
  • Combine Fork and Yarn.
  • Go to Reactor and put Fusion Orb in your Bowl of Ice Cream.
  • Sprinkle cereal on floor. Get to trash chute via Starboard Passageway teleporter. Click on Hexipal.
  • Drop off your payload and use use the teleporters to go to Marek's Quarters.
  • Push aside exposed panel by door and tell the Maidens you have food.
    • "I'm going to get you out of there!"
    • "Hey, I've got some cereal here. Do you want some?"
  • Give the Maidens Floor Cereal, take Hook, and then touch panel again to sound alarm.
  • Race around and lock the doors on Marek.
  • Grab Star Chart and head to Space Weaver's Room.
  • Stick Yarned Fork in Space Weaver and give it Star Chart. Make the following alterations with your hook:
  • Switch to Shay. You're done here!
ACT 2: Shay
When I did my run for the achievement, I was able to complete this section in about 9 minutes.

PART ONE: GETTING YOUR BEARINGS
  • Collect Hexipal in the sand.
  • Talk to Alex for Conductor Blueprints. Exhaust all dialogue options.
  • Get the Snake outside Curtis' House.
    • Remember: you can't skip this cutscene. Just let it happen.
  • Collect Flier from mailbox.

PART TWO: NEW THREADS
  • Go to Merriloft.
    • Curtis will try to talk to you. Pick any of the responses and then end the conversation.
  • Convince Twyla to make you a Radiation Suit.
    • "Everything okay here?"
    • Pick any of the subsequent responses.
    • Pick any of the subsequent responses.
    • "Well, at least your costume is cool."
    • "Do you think you could make me a costume?"
  • Ask to buy Cupcake from Maggie and Rocky.
    • "I want a cupcake!"
    • Pick any of the resulting responses.
    • End conversation.
  • Get Money from Ch't.
    • "Do you guys know any place here to get some money?"
    • End conversation.
  • Buy a Cupcake.
  • Give Cupcake to Walter.
  • Give Bald Cupcake to Grandpa in exchange for Cane.
  • Talk to Bodyguards.
    • "If you give me back those robes, I promise Alex won't press charges."
    • "I'll fight you for those robes, no problem. I need them to help my mom."
    • "I'm going to go get a stick, and then we're gonna fight for those robes!"
    • End conversation.
  • Spar with Bodyguards and collect their Robes.
  • Jump down to trunk and collect a piece of Fruit. Talk to Gus for his Tap.
    • "What's that thing you're sticking in the fruit?"
    • "Hey, can I borrow that little fruit tapper?"
    • End conversation.
  • Use Tap on Jessie's Egg, collect Eggshells.
  • Return to Twyla, give her Space Suit and Robes and get Radiation Suit.

PART THREE: DO A DOLLOP OF SEALANT
  • Go to Harm'ny's Gates, save your game, and climb ladder.
  • Talk to F'ther about untying knot.
    • "Can you untie that bow on Harm'ny's cloud?"
    • Let go of the Spacebar and pick any of the subsequent responses EXCEPT for "To expose him for the fraud that he is."
    • Take a screenshot of what the knot looks like for future reference. This is randomized each time you load the game, so don't go back to an older save, or you'll have to start over.
    • "Hm, sounds bad. I'd better go find a knot expert for advice."
  • Tell Carol about the knot.
    • You seem good with your hands. Know anything about KNOTS?"
    • Explain what the knot looks like.
  • Go to Alex and get his pencil.
    • "Can I borrow your space pencil?"
    • End conversation.
  • Give Pencil to Carol and get Instructions.
  • Use Snake on Marshal Dune and get Whistle.
  • Give Conductor Blueprints to Marshal Dune and get the Sandy Prototype.
    • "I think sand is the perfect material for making spaceship parts!"
  • Talk to Dad.
    • "What's cookin'?"
    • End conversation.
  • Adjust the sealant's pH level.
    • pH must always be 7, but the starting pH is random, so you'll have to figure out the recipe by yourself.
    • Use the Spoon on the Fruit (lowers pH by 2) and Eggshells (raises pH by 3). Don't worry about the Spacebar, as the game won't skip the sealant's pH readings until you're all done.

PART FOUR: AMATEUR ENGINEER
  • Go to Talking Tree, put Sandy Prototype on ground, and show the flier to Talking Tree.
  • Go to Curtis and get him to cast your Sap Mold.
    • "What are you making there?"
    • "What are you forging?"
    • Pick any of the subsequent responses.
    • End conversation.
  • Give Sap Mold to Curtis.
  • Return to F'ther and give him directions to untie knot.
    • "Let's give that knot another try, okay?"
    • Give directions step by step.
  • Get the Talking Fish from Talking Tree by telling it a joke.
    • Exhaust dialogue options until "That fish up there in your branches...can I have it?" appears.
    • "Oh come on. You don't need that fish."
    • "Hey, want to hear a joke?"
    • Possible Jokes:
      • "What's the smallest full-grown tree you ever heard of?" then "I've seen one no bigger than my hand." then "A Palm Tree."
      • "Did you hear about the First National Tree Bank?" then "It closed down!" then "Don't worry. It just started a new branch."
      • "Say, do you know Ol' Pete the Pine Tree?" then "Well, I head he got in some really big trouble." then "It seems he was being...really knotty."
  • Show Carol Talking Fish, then give her Crochet Hook.
    • She'll try to talk to you. Exit the conversation.
  • Combine Wire with Hexipal.
  • Return to Alex's ship and save. Re-wire Hexipal using the Diamond Charging Pillar and Picture from Vella's side.
    • Once Hexipal has been properly re-wired, write down the wire layout and load your old save.
  • Re-wire Hexipal and give the Radiation Suit, Conductor, and Hexipal to Alex.
FINALE
When I did my run for the achievement, I was able to complete this section in about 4 minutes.

PART ONE: WIRES&WIRES&WIRES
  • Switch to Vella and immediately save the game.
  • Collect Hexipal.
  • Examine the scorch marks on the underside.
    • This is the wiring pattern for the Hexipal's "Flashlight Wave" routine. Take a screenshot of it or write it down so you can refer to it later.
  • Go to Deck and use Trigger Module.
  • Switch to Shay and look at the book with the Hexipal playing Harp.
    • This is the coded wiring pattern for the Hexipal's "Harp Playing" routine. Draw the final pattern or take a screenshot of the correct wiring in a Hexipal to refer to later.
  • Load your saved game from before.

PART TWO: SYNCHRONIZED EXECUTION
  • As Vella, collect Hexipal, then collect Wires.
  • Skip through the conversation.
  • Wire up Hexipal to "Harp Playing" mode.
  • Go to ship's Deck and use the Trigger Module.
  • Switch to Shay and use Grabbin' Gary's Remote Switch.
  • Switch back to Vella. Get in position under the Space Weaver.
  • Switch to Shay and collect Broken Radio.
  • Give Broken Radio to Hexipal. Give Fixed Radio to Alex.
  • Show Hexipal to Rogue Robots.
  • Wire Hexipal to "Harp Playing" mode. Set it at harp.
  • Collect Mallet, go around and flip switch.
  • Combine Hexipal and Mallet, wire Hexipal to "Flashlight Wave" routine, and set it next to drum.
  • Go to Control Room.
  • Switch to Vella and set down Hexipal.
  • Switch Cargo Boom Arm controls to Manual.
  • Go to Deck.
  • Switch to Shay and use Grabbin' Gary's Remote Switch.
  • Switch to Vella and use Trigger Module.
  • Give yourself a pat on the back; you just beat the game in under an hour.
Conclusion

So that's that! Follow this guide and familiarize yourself with the world Double Fine created, and this achievement will be a piece of cake.

Looking up a walkthrough makes it extremely easy because it doesn't include paused gameplay

This is a very helpful guide, however there's a very clear flaw with the order of operations in Shay's Act 2 section when going to Meriloft. The first thing you say to do is to first go talk to Twyla to convince her to make you the radiation suit. Without the robes from the Druids, there's no reason to do this, and if you do it first, then you'll need to make 2 unnecessary trips.
Instead, you can do everything else listed first, THEN go talk to Twyla, when you actually have the robes.

Doing Friendship Circle quest at least one time seems to be mandatory in order to have the crochet hook from the yarn pal. Otherwise the yarn pal won't have the crochet hook stuck in his back.

You don't need to switch to Shay at the end to activate grabbing gary first. Activating the deathray as soon as you move vella to the deck and then activating grabbing gary will work just fine.

Also, i dont seem to understand why you do the friendship circle quest at first. I did it because i'm afraid that i'll miss something important but idk if it's necessary since you won't get any item out of it.
