The Apple Mod
By PepperJack
A complete apple farming and food production system for Space Engineers.

This mod introduces apples as a fully farmable crop that integrates seamlessly with the vanilla food system. Grow apple trees, harvest your crop, and craft a variety of apple-based foods and beverages to keep your engineers fed.

Apples can substitute for fruit in any vanilla recipe, giving you an alternative path to food production. The mod includes a full farming loop: grow apples, extract seeds, compost the cores, breed worms, and use the compost to grow more trees.

Perfect for survival servers looking to expand their food options without breaking game balance. All items are tradeable at NPC stations and balanced against vanilla food values.

Getting Started
Welcome to The Apple Mod! This guide will help you set up your first apple farm and start producing food.

Two Ways to Grow Apples

Method 1: Farm Plots (Vanilla Farming)
  1. Obtain Apple Seeds (buy from NPC stations or extract from apples)
  2. Plant seeds in a Farm block
  3. Provide water and wait for growth
  4. Harvest 2-5 apples per crop

Method 2: Apple Tree Farm Block
  1. Craft an Apple Sapling from 1 apple
  2. Make Farm Compost (see Composting section)
  3. Build the Apple Tree Farm block (requires 1 Sapling + 10 Compost)
  4. Tree produces 1-10 apples every 5 minutes automatically

Getting Your First Apple

If you're starting fresh, you can:
  • Buy apples from NPC trading stations
  • Buy apple seeds and grow them in a farm plot
  • Find them as rare loot (if using loot mods)

Once you have your first apple, the farming loop begins!

Composting System
The composting system creates a sustainable farming loop. Here's how it works:

The Farming Loop

Apple -> Extract Seeds -> Apple Seeds + Apple Core | | v v Plant in Farm Use for Composting | | v v Grow Apples Farm Compost | | +--------------+ | v Build Apple Tree Farm | v More Apples!

Making Compost

You have three options for making Farm Compost:

Option 1: Apple Core + Worms (Best)
  • 5 Apple Cores + 3 Raw Worms = 1 Farm Compost
  • Most efficient use of materials
  • Worms can be bred from compost (self-sustaining loop)

Option 2: Mixed Organic (Alternative)
  • 3 Apple Cores + 2 Vegetables + 2 Algae = 1 Farm Compost
  • Good if you have excess vegetables/algae
  • Faster production time

Option 3: Apple Cores Only (Emergency)
  • 10 Apple Cores = 1 Farm Compost
  • Least efficient but requires no other materials
  • Use when you have lots of cores but nothing else

Worm Farming

Worms serve multiple purposes:
  • Composting - Mix with apple cores for efficient compost
  • Food (Raw) - Edible in emergencies, low nutrition
  • Food (Cooked) - Safe protein source
  • Worm Protein Pack - High-value meal (3 cooked worms + grain + apple)

Breeding Worms:
1x Farm Compost = 5x Worm (Raw)

This creates a loop:
Compost -> Worms -> More Compost -> More Worms

Sustainable Farm Setup

For a fully self-sustaining apple farm:

  1. Start with purchased apples or seeds
  2. Grow apples in farm plots
  3. Extract seeds (gives cores as byproduct)
  4. Use cores + worms to make compost
  5. Build Apple Tree Farms for passive production
  6. Use compost to breed more worms
  7. Repeat!

Once established, your farm generates apples passively while the composting system sustains itself.
Apple Tree Farm Block
The Apple Tree Farm is a decorative block that passively produces apples.

Build Requirements

  • 1x Apple Sapling (crafted from 1 Apple)
  • 10x Farm Compost

Building Stages

As you weld the block, the tree grows through visual stages:

  1. 0-25% - Sapling stage (tiny tree)
  2. 25-50% - Small tree
  3. 50-100% - Medium tree
  4. 100% - Full grown tree with apples

Placement Tips

  • Place on any flat surface - mounts from the bottom
  • Works indoors or outdoors
  • Multiple trees can be placed together for an orchard effect
  • No power or conveyors required

Maintenance

The block description mentions "Must be tended to or will die" - this is flavor text. In practice:
  • The tree produces apples automatically when fully built
  • Apples spawn in a nearby inventory or drop on the ground
  • No active maintenance required beyond initial construction

Setup Recommendations

Small Scale (Personal):
  • 2-3 trees provide enough apples for one player
  • Place near your survival kit or med bay

Medium Scale (Base):
  • 5-10 trees for a small crew
  • Create an indoor greenhouse area

Large Scale (Server/Production):
  • 20+ trees for trading or large crews
  • Set up near cargo containers for automatic collection
Tips and Strategies
Early Game

  • Buy 2-3 apples from an NPC station to start your farm
  • Plant seeds in farm plots first - cheaper than building tree farms
  • Eat apples raw if you're starving - they provide some food value
  • Save apple cores! You'll need them for composting later

Mid Game

  • Extract seeds from every apple to build up core stockpiles
  • Start breeding worms once you have compost
  • Build your first Apple Tree Farm for passive production
  • Apple Chips are lightweight - great for exploration missions

Late Game

  • Set up an orchard of 10+ tree farms for surplus apples
  • Trade excess apples and products at NPC stations
  • Apple Pie and Steak Dinner are the highest food value recipes
  • Worm Protein Packs are efficient when you have excess worms

Food Efficiency

Ranked by food value per apple used:

  1. Apple Steak Dinner - Best value (requires meat)
  2. Apple Pie - High value, only needs grain
  3. Apple Curry - Good value, uses 2 apples
  4. Apple Sauce - Medium value, simple recipe
  5. Caramel Apple - Medium value, needs grain
  6. Apple Cider - Uses 4 apples, medium return
  7. Raw Apple - Lowest value, eat only in emergencies

Composting Efficiency

Best composting strategy:
  1. Always extract seeds (gets you cores for free)
  2. Use Apple Core + Worm recipe when possible
  3. Breed worms to keep the loop going
  4. Use Simple Compost only when you have a core surplus

Space Efficiency

  • Apple Chips have the best volume-to-food ratio
  • Stack apple chips for long expeditions
  • Raw apples are bulky - process them before storing

Multiplayer / Server Tips

  • Set up a communal orchard for the faction
  • Assign one player to manage composting
  • Trade excess production to other factions
  • Apple products are valuable at NPC stations
Frequently Asked Questions
General

Q: Do apples work with the vanilla food system?
A: Yes! Apples provide food and health stats just like vanilla consumables. They can also substitute for fruit in vanilla recipes.

Q: Does this mod require any dependencies?
A: No. The Apple Mod works standalone. It's compatible with iSurvival but doesn't require it.

Q: Can I buy apples from NPC stations?
A: Yes! All apple items (fruit, seeds, products) can be bought and sold at NPC trading stations.

Q: Does this work in multiplayer?
A: Yes, fully compatible with dedicated servers and multiplayer.

Farming

Q: What's the difference between seeds and saplings?
A: Seeds are planted in vanilla Farm blocks and grow apples. Saplings are used to build the decorative Apple Tree Farm block.

Q: How long does it take to grow apples from seeds?
A: Apple seeds have a 2.0x growth multiplier, so they take twice as long as base crops. The exact time depends on your Farm block settings.

Q: Do Apple Tree Farm blocks need power?
A: No, they're passive blocks that produce apples every 5 minutes when fully built.

Q: Where do the apples from tree farms go?
A: They spawn near the block. Place the tree near a cargo container or check the ground nearby.

Composting

Q: What's the most efficient way to make compost?
A: Apple Core + Worm recipe (5 cores + 3 worms = 1 compost). Worms can be bred from compost, making it sustainable.

Q: I don't have worms. How do I start?
A: Use the Simple Compost recipe (10 Apple Cores = 1 Compost) to get your first compost, then breed worms from it.

Q: Can I buy compost or worms?
A: Yes, both Farm Compost and Worms can be purchased from NPC stations if you don't want to make them.

Recipes & Food

Q: Which apple food gives the most nutrition?
A: Apple Pie and Apple Steak Dinner provide the highest food values. Raw apples are the lowest.

Q: Can worms actually be eaten?
A: Yes! Raw worms are edible but provide little nutrition. Cooked worms are a decent protein source.

Q: Do apple recipes appear in all assembler types?
A: Recipes appear in the appropriate production blocks. Food recipes go in Survival Kits and Food Processors.

Troubleshooting

Q: I can't find the Apple Tree Farm block.
A: Check the decorative or farming category in the G-menu. It's listed under "Apple Tree Farm."

Q: My tree farm isn't producing apples.
A: Make sure it's fully welded (100%). Check nearby for dropped apples.

Q: Recipes aren't showing up.
A: Ensure the mod is properly loaded. Check for mod conflicts. Restart the game if needed.
