2025 GunZ 2 Steam/Reborn Guide
By Bill
GunZ 2 may appear to be a dead game but I like to view it as a never dying opportunity. GunZ 2 Steam released on May, 2014, so it's been out for a long time. GunZ 2 K-Style discovery around 2020. As you're aware with the Steam Charts player count from the early stages of the game, the GunZ Followers ditched the game within a month of release. The game was still being worked on, patch notes after the first month while in early access, and time to form a meta, and remove very broken exploits on Steam patch notes. With time, it was fixed, and the game has flourished dramatically by having consistent, low player parties from around the globe to connect and create a community. A high player count on-release early access from previous Die hard GunZ fans, to then to be dead on arrival. Simply because "It's not like the first one". Is it as different or bad as they say GunZ 2 is? (no)

This is just the intro to my Guide for the new GunZ 2 Free-to-Play game enjoyers, on how to start playing for real, and connect with players in your Region.

FAQ for Newcomers, and Veterans for the new generation of GunZ 2
GunZ 2 Private Server (aka GunZ 2: Reborn) -Owned and created by Milice, and Reborn Team.
Best GunZ server, for long term play, sustainability, reliability, and meaningful progression.

Come join using your Primary Sniper and Sword, using pure talent and skill to swap between them for the right situation.

- As a Brand New Player is this the game for me?

This game has an amazing community of players, I would consider this a Fun place, as the best way to describe it. Everyone is very nice for the most part, though some GunZ 1 players hating, everyone playing here is genuinely awesome, especially the players playing for so long and dedicating time and practice to get better. Though GunZ 2 is mostly about one thing, the true competitive drive for true skill expression in a video game. GunZ 2 is a game full of options, potential, only up to the player to use your Style to the fullest potential. And is claimed to be the Hardest movement to master in video game history right now. Don't fret if you can't keep up, the game is hard and it'll take time. GunZ 2 gives the player more casual friendly, more accessible and easier to understand movement,. i.e Wall-running, and simple Dash mechanics. PvP Aside, play the Campaign if you're looking for a silly Single player/Co-op 3D arcade action side scroller type game. It's a bit harder than it should be for new players, but not too hard with others. I recommend to play on the Reborn server for campaign and you'll get actual meaningful rewards and you can just Hack if you choose to go the GunZ Steam route to get every Item on GunZ 2 Steam for Free, since it's not fair to have Pay to Win in your game and never update it/support (Masangsoft, Maiet inc.)

- How many players play GunZ2 Vs. GunZ1?
Including GunZ 2 Steam, and Reborn in 2025, 30-50+ active players, 1000+ followers, from newly created Reborn accounts, Discord Members, and active people from 1 and 2. Also not including the entire Dev team of Reborn currently.
GunZ 1 has reached 3k Peak Years ago on a private server, though extremely split community nowadays. GunZ: The Duel, the original has 100-400+ active players and more following due to the legacy the game created, being the ultimate skill expressive shooter. With the new GunZ: The Duel Steam there is no way to tell how popular it will really get. Though reception say GunZ: The Duel Steam has been quite mixed reviewed with many contributors, mostly the developer communication, and community. While GunZ Steam may thrive for a bit, the hype may die down (again) once it finally releases (if it does).
GunZ 2 didn't have a chance with the players, while most of the players giving it a shot are GunZ 1, original Elitist mentality at the beginning, they were all not able to adapt to a more difficult environment. Expecting instant results, with original K-Style Rhythm, it's just not going to happen with how Dashing angles differently, and stricter Halfstep timing. Leaving Negative review bombing GunZ 2 page from the entire GunZ 1 community, which is completely unfair to the Original developers, and the players who actually enjoy the game. ESEPCIALLY for what it was at the time of 2014-2019 when K-Style development and discovery still being made.
While the other hand, the free-to-play new to the GunZ franchise players. Struggle to find a game with the Region restrictions in GunZ 2, (which I explain more later and how to find players) and expect Normal Game queue to be the Spot to play which really isn't. If you're still reading and are interested in finding players, check out the discord to connect with others, and methods to finding region chats (explanation in another section)

- Which Character should I choose first?

Every character can do the same regular Dashes with a few other Tumble/Roll exceptions on Wayne and Rose. Few Melee Kit differences and Weapons are the only core differences. Ivan is the all rounder, can do everything, and heavily delves into halfstep mechanics and movement options that benefit him more than other characters do. So much so that Ivan is one of few that needs it and some others don't need it much at all. If you're here for a good time, not for a serious battle, some of the other characters are fun routes to take! Wayne is also has an extremely unique skill set that fits quite well with the game's Fast, Mechanic Heavy nature. Reload shot and Slash your whip to victory, no halfstep.

- Why can I not Slash Shot? No Slash Shot in GunZ 2.

There is MANY Slash shot mechanics in GunZ 2, we go by different names, and have way too many setups for them. Just to name a few, Snipe, Quick Lunge, and other Dash mechanics to be tied between that. Snipe, Slash, in reverse. HSJ (HalfStep Jump), Quick Lunge, Snipe, all require Block Cancel in this game.

- Can you "Double Shotgun" in GunZ 2?

This is something I have tested on the Public Beta GunZ 2: Reborn server, it does have a unique set of tools in this game, though not like the original as the Shotgun did not have the intention to stay to it's roots. GunZ 2 took the emphasis of toughness to the *Max* with big Snipers and heavy Tech build up around the Sniper Rifle, in this game and the Rifle/Other Shotgun variant that Wayne has (Defender) That's good on Private server with well deserved buffs, and no, Double Shotgun has not been tested yet on Wayne, on that thought could be insanely good.

Does GunZ 2 Have Kstyle? Can you use Dash Mechanics like in GunZ: The Duel?

Yes, though performed differently with the same idea and concept in mind. More difficult to execute due to the tight frame windows, comes out on top being faster and more expressive as well.

- Intro

I'll be extremely down to earth with each of my responses, there is also just so much to talk about! Where to even start, I wanted to quickly point out, the Steam Front Page, description of the game is the following, "GunZ 2: the Second Duel is a free-to-play 3D TPS and is the most fast-paced tough action shooter game", Emphasis on the Face Paced nature of this game, many of the players nowadays with experience will imitate the top movements to evade and shoot and slash. Using Exploits those familiar with the Original GunZ : The Duel K-Style Formula. Slash Shot, and other Dash, and Melee Sword mechanics. Those are all great options and even more in-depth in GunZ 2 than the original. Be aware of experienced players, they're mechanics anybody can learn, but will take practice of course and slightly different to perform. The timing is more strict on the weapon swap which will be explained more on the halfstep tutorial if you are interested to start off with. This is only the beginning of your journey of exploring every GunZ 2 mechanic available at your disposal. One last thing I'd like to mention, GunZ 2 objectively is more difficult than GunZ1, just by pure nature on how halfstep timing is, and other mechanics required to press in such quick succession, if you're interested in pursuing some of the hardest feats in gaming history and should honestly be talked about more, here it is!

How to Play GunZ 2 - 2025
If you're brand new to the GunZ franchise as a whole or GunZ 2, if you're not proceed to the next paragraph, Welcome to GunZ 2: The Second Duel, You dash around in this game, and hop on walls and dash some more as the basics. Dash by double pressing a direction key (w, a, s ,d) W W for instance. To jump off the wall, Gain height with Jump Space Bar, Dash into wall or Hop on it, then press the opposite direction key (w, a, s, d) from the wall. Or any desired direction. To cling to the wall and basic wall running, spam space bar to see where the limits lie. Though you can Jump off wall and reattach with space bar, Space bar very important to maintain ON the wall, Jump away with Jump Direction. Jump Dash off the wall repeatedly to maintain height going place to place in the air. You can also Right Mouse Button your Sword while airborne into a wall, to hang/cling into the wall.

This is the How to Play GunZ 2 Section, I will be guiding you on researching the Basic Melee kit. I will explain as best as possible, though I am going to refer you to a guide eventually if you want a list of every move in the game. Take this Steam guide with a grain of salt, as its very old, outdated and missing a lot of key information for current GunZ 2 K-style. BUT It's perfect for displaying every single Basic move in the game, first step: Click the other Steam guide listed below, Refer to "Melee Basics section" about halfway through the guide, Here you will find Every single basic Melee move in the game and all of the inputs needed to perform them, there are a few advanced things, but please refer to My guide for advanced tips and it'll be on a later Section with videos. Reason why this guide isn't the greatest as I state before, outdated, some mechanics are so niche and/or not used, and meta has shifted SO SO much since the last time its been actively updated.

https://steamproxy.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?l=english&id=343878101

Best Basic Melee Moves to start off as Ivan,

Left Mouse Button + Right Mouse Button - Parry (While getting attacked only)
Left Mouse Button -> Right Mouse Button - Block break and Push back (Snipe to finish them)
4x Left Mouse Button Combo (Enemy can parry, Snipe to Finish them off)
Try this out!
Left Mouse Button -> Sniper swap, Right Click to Scope -> instantly shoot, head preferably

Bit more difficult but still easy,

Jump -> Dash -> Left Mouse Button with sword (Lunge)
Jump -> desired Single direction key input -> Left Click (Light Step, Single Butterfly)
Jump -> Left Mouse Button -> desired Single direction key input -> Left Mouse Button (Easy, Basic Double Butterfly alternative not amazing but ok)

Hard but essential for Combo routes

Single Butterfly -> Before landing and Peak Jump Height, End with another Left Mouse Button (Real Double Butterfly)
Dash -> Jump + Left Mouse Button (Quarter Slash basic)

Quarter Slash can be added at the end of Double Butterfly to extend to Triple Butterfly, but also Quarter Slash opens up the window for many combo routes. This is one of the most difficult mechanics in the game, despite having such easy input to understand. It's all frame perfect timing, the Jump and Left Mouse button must be perfectly in sync. Quarter Slash basic is just the beginning, as a very strict block cancel window must be performed to reliably cancel and do other actions afterwards, like Infinite Butterfly.

Looking for tips for characters that isn't Ivan? Ask the discord for tips of the character or refer to the guide for move-set. Though Wayne guide may be on it's way, but Rose on her own, and everyone else-- there isn't much else to be said about them.

Dash Optimization Section:

This video is a great example of what dashing could look like in this game and the variety of different ways it comes out. You can instantly Jump Dash land and shoot upon desired timing if performed correctly
(Foxtrotting)

This also plays into Dash -> Jump -> Dash, which is essentially the same thing, with more of a setup. Which is this video,

it came from the guide I provided before, as you can see in the video. The character's Legs don't quite fully contact the ground like a Running animation (DashForward, and Holding Forward). Which is what the Foxtrotting is really all about, landing on the ground, and giving yourself NO ENDLAG upon landing onto the ground every time with correct timing. Same thing goes into account with Halfstep being very similar, Landing sooner than normal, giving you faster options, and cancel windows with Block Cancels/Jump Cancels/Swap Cancels/ all the cancels! May seem complicated but it'll all come together piece by piece with more playtime.

You can also perform this in multiple directions, as example (all Double Direction Key Input for Dash); Left -> Forward, Right -> Forward, Forward -> Forward, Backward -> Forward. Of course you can have your last Dash in (Dash -> Jump -> Dash) to be a Side or backward dash, but they don't have the same unique property Forward Dash has. Forward Dash gives generally slightly less airtime compared to the other directions. And also can manipulated with Rising or Falling Dashes with different timings. With the falling one of Forward Dash, it gives the unique property of giving no end lag allowing for instant snipes, instant sword options, or more movement options.

Reborn/Steam Which is better?
If you don't really wanna read the stuff below as the reasoning behind the Downfall of GunZ 2 in the beginning of it's launch. Long Story Short, GunZ 2 is great as a Stand alone game, especially as just raw gameplay. GunZ 2 is genuinely super fun, though the Pay to win, for the accessibility. The Meta of GunZ 2 is Stale, Best Spray is abused, and Won't ever change. GunZ: The Duel at the end of the day's core audience are players seeking high caliber, skill expressive gameplay players and game. GunZ 2 claims the Throne for the most skill expressive, most difficult shooter created when it’s all said and done though Steam has its glaring balance issues.

All, and I mean ALL of these issues listed below are pretty much fixed on Reborn which is awesome and the biggest step forward we could ever ask for. GunZ 2 does still have P2P Connection, and active fixes for this, coincide gameplay changes for the first time ever, are being made currently on GunZ 2: Reborn to help the accessibility of the new generations of players, and huge quality of life and Real time fighting changes.

Pay to Win, system -
Paying with Real currency for Loot, to then not be guaranteed the item you want. A awful Weapon Crate system, with no reliable way to earn/grind more.

All Weapons in the Tesla Shop are the best weapons in the game, with a few exceptions. Common Swords are good bought from shop, though are more limited due to the lack of Elemental Damage that all of the Tesla Shop weapons have. What makes most Tesla Shop weapons just straight up better, is just the raw buffs the weapons gives you for the Premium/Tesla Shop variant that is also completely dependent on RNG for collecting these items.

From Time:Loot, The ratio is completely off, not only there not a reliable playerbase on Steam anymore, and lack of Cross-Region play without using in-game commands. You of course just don't earn enough Gold, Ores, and Crystals. Most new players will often find themselves in Practice Game, or Campaign due to lack of Queue time in Normal games leading to just less loot earned in the long run.

Everything in the game is also just expensive, its difficult to grind for one thing.

Connection/P2P

While I'm going over all of Steam's growing issues, this is the #1 problem for long term players that do heavily enjoy this game. Host in this game, especially with the Increasingly high damage in this server is extremely broken. Host would play 0 Ping, while the rest of the players have to play Ping based on their connection to the Host. Pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ in a competitive environment. Though there are mechanics, and techniques that bolster the Non-Host players. Giving them the unique ability to counter their opponent. Though in a extremely punishing, One Mistake = Death environment. Those small moments is what adds up and 0 Ping will reign victorious in an even playing field.
Steam Host is also very very strange, sometimes it just gets stuck! You can't change no matter how many times you press the Change host button. The solution is to, go back to lobby and start all over and change host at the beginning of the game. Why does the Host just randomly get stuck? Well the reliable answer is the Region difference among players, sometimes the server doesn't like when the ping is very high, and host changes mid-match. No real reason as to why.
GunZ: The Duel Vs. GunZ 2: The Second Duel
This section is a genuine response to the never ending, nonsensical debate between, pretty much only Moagun and Gabi, the GunZ 2 Enthusiasts and other GunZ2 Kstyle Enjoyers. Versus the rest of the GunZ 1 Community. While many others exist within the GunZ 2 community like the Active Development Team for GunZ 2: Reborn Private Server, and other dedicated followers/players. Many of the hardcore fans are restrained by the lack of English. Many are from other regions, which make sense, GunZ 2 has much Positive reviews and feedback in other Regions that isn't NA, and KR. Many cannot spread word of the game to begin with, and their opinions on each of the respective games.

Which game is actually better?

GunZ 1, is tied to a Create your character style, choosing your own gender, which changes your animations, create any combination of weapons (restrictions apply). Though the among the best, and the most skill expressive weapon of choice is the Double Shotgun. Which made the game live as long as it has, 20+ years now. It makes sense, the game provided such a new ambitious spin on Third Person Shooter genre, and shooters in general. The first game to add, Sword + Shooting style PvP gameplay, with many animation cancels and bug/exploits to move at extreme speeds and maintain a Shooting rhythm.

GunZ 2, is tied to a Class-Based (Not Arena) Shooter, Choosing desired character with select a individual Kit. Many have similar attributes like Basic movement, while the rest of the kit plays out very differently. GunZ 2, being a Choose your character game, gives you a sense of connection to the story and theme. When you see GunZ IP, or content, it'd be hard to identify anything with a specific character in mind. Unlike GunZ 1, in The Second Duel you can create real connections, relations and identifying parts with each character while playing pivotable roles in the current GunZ story. GunZ 2 characters have at least a chance of becoming a Featured character in a game like Smash Bros. while GunZ 1 has none.

GunZ 2 is very identical from a gameplay perspective, Swap, Jump, Dash, Shoot, Slash, or many other combinations to end your opponent. But with time and optimization, GunZ 2 KStyle which didn't exist until around 2020 (The Omega Advanced mechanics). If you like the emphasis on the toughness of the game, with Snipers and pure Tactical, Platform Fighter, TPS Mayhem also Rifle/Shotgun still available and others. This is absolutely the game for you, it's just the Original GunZ: The Duel but faster, more difficult mechanic timings (Could be a negative), and more expressive. So much to do, see, and discover hope to see you Learn true K-Style.
Where to find players and Why the game is Dead
GunZ 2: Steam cannot find players in a different region from you. Unless you do specific commands to go to other Region Chats, to then maybe find players that haven't yet closed the chat box yet. Pretty bad way to find players in a game with little players. First things I recommend if you actually want to find some New players, Yes Region chat surfing which all of this information and other resources will be listed in the OG GunZ 2 Discord, which is ultimately where I would recommend everyone to start out with.

GunZ 2 Reborn is currently undergoing new changes and patches that I'm not flattered for the some of the hardest mechanics, they are slightly different for now as unfortunate consequence to the recent changes, everything else is exactly the same and changes were made to make the game more accessible with Sword Combo Moves in the air. My previous statement on the not flattered on the changes, it'll very likely be fixed, as it's already been addressed.

With a simple Start of a friend group from any region, even in NA. Could really spark something up in this game, maybe something pretty big. Come check out GunZ 2 Reborn! Steam is still great and check out the resources in the OG GunZ2 discord. With Steam and Reborn player counts in mind with Current Day, its around 30-50 active users, with 50-300 potential players always. Many more to come, especially with traction from Video Viewership of this game and Die Hard fans. https://images.steamusercontent.com/ugc/12228194232597329498/E44ED333BFE85FFC5F570C36664786310EF5AE04/?imw=256&&ima=fit&impolicy=Letterbox&imcolor=%23000000&letterbox=false

HalfHalfStep - Quick Lunge

DHSQS+

Landing DHS+ Added Variant (Used for landing and mix up)

Halfstep Jump (alternate halfstep float)

(Infinite Butterfly) The hardest Gladiator/Sword Melee mechanic in the game

If you want a general list of every mechanic including some of the most obescure stuff and want to learn more, I have another Steam guide to recommend here is the link
