Tex Murphy WASD Movement Mod Installation Guide
By Lord Giygas
Hello, I wanted to share with you my process on how to apply the mod “Under a Killing Moon/The Pandora Directive - Mouselook Edition” – Created by moralrecordings [github.com]

I think this mod is fantastic and brings new life to our favorite hard-boiled PI by finally fixing the movement with proper WASD controls. Unfortunately, the GitHub page by moralrecordings doesn't give a good explanation on how to properly install this mod for people like myself who are not exactly tech-savvy. So, I thought I would share my process on how I got this mod to work.

Before you get into the guide:
- This mod will work with your current save
- The process for this mod is the same with Pandora Directive, but you will be using TEX4.exe instead of TEX3.exe
- If you download a newer version of XDelta you will need to replace the name of the XDelta in “Step 3.”
(e.g., change the name of (.\xdelta3-3.1.0-i686.exe….) to the current XDelta.exe you are using)
- I am not sure if this patch will work for Steam Deck users. I do not own a Steam Deck so please let me know if this works for you. I'm genuinely curious.

Step 1: Download “Mouselook Edition” and XDelta
1. Go to moralrecordings GitHub page: GitHub link [github.com]
2. Download the mod files (or just download tex3mod.vcdiff) and the latest XDelta patching tool on the main page.
(xdelta3-3.1.0-i686.exe is what I used at the time of writing this)
(Do not download XDelta UI for this process as I could not get this to work)
3. On your desktop, create a folder called: TEX3Mod
4. Unpack the zip files: tex3-mouselook-main & xdelta3-3.1.0-i686.exe
5. Move the XDelta patching tool and tex3mod.vcdiff to your TEX3Mod folder.
Your TEX3Mod folder should look like this: - tex3mod.vcdiff (mod patch) - xdelta3-3.1.0-i686.exe (Or the latest version)
Step 2: Prepare the Original Game File
1. Access your Tex Murphy local game folder.
(Steam Library → Right-click Tex Murphy: Under a Killing Moon on the left side of your library → Manage → Browse local files)
2. Open your TEX3 folder and locate the TEX3.exe file.
3. Copy and paste your TEX3.exe into your TEX3Mod folder.
Do not delete TEX3.exe from its original folder.
Step 3: Applying the Patch
Ensure your TEX3Mod folder contains these three files:
- TEX3.exe (Copy of the original game file) - tex3mod.vcdiff (mod patch) - xdelta3-3.1.0-i686.exe (Or the latest version)
1. Hold the Shift key and Right-click an open area inside your TEX3Mod folder and select
Open PowerShell window here.
2. Run the following command in PowerShell. Copy and paste the command below if you are using the same XDelta version as this guide.
.\xdelta3-3.1.0-i686.exe -d -s TEX3.EXE tex3mod.vcdiff tex3mod.exe
Reminder: If you downloaded a newer version of XDelta, replace the filename above with your version.
3. If done correctly, this creates a tex3mod.exe in the same folder.
4. Move your new tex3mod.exe to the original TEX3 folder via your Steam local files.
Step 4: Update DOSBox Launch Script
1. Open your Tex Murphy local files again (the same way as in Step 2). Then open the folder called dosbox_windows.
2. Inside dosbox_windows, locate dosbox_texmurphy3_launch_windows.
3. Right-click dosbox_texmurphy3_launch_windows and open with Notepad.

You should see this when you open Notepad:
mount C ".." imgmount D "..\TEX3\ISO\UAKM.ISO" -t iso -fs iso C: CD TEX3 CLS TEX197.EXE EXIT

4. Change TEX197.EXE to tex3mod.exe

You should now have this:
mount C ".." imgmount D "..\TEX3\ISO\UAKM.ISO" -t iso -fs iso C: CD TEX3 CLS tex3mod.exe EXIT
Step 5: Launch the Game
- Do NOT use the DOSBOX Daum in the launch options, otherwise this mod will not work.
Conclusion
That’s it, case closed. With mouselook enabled, you’ll be sleuthing around Chandler Avenue smoother than ever. Big thanks to moralrecordings for this mod — now go solve some mysteries, detective.

If you found this guide helpful, please give it a thumbs up to further inflate my ego.

Thanks for this. It works great on the Steam Deck.

Here's what I did to make the magic happen:

Installed UAKM on my SD and on my PC
Followed this guide to install the patch (version 1.0) and tweak the config file on my PC
Copied tex3mod.exe and dosbox_texmurphy3_launch_windows.conf to the correct folders on my SD overwriting the original .conf file

Launched the game on the SD and lowered the in-game mouse sensitivity. Now I can finally control the game like a modern FPS when in Interactive Mode. Was on the cusp of getting used to the original controls after 30 odd years but this is still a much better option.

Thanks so much for the guide. It works brilliantly. I've been using Windows for 35 years, but this is the first time I've used a PowerShell command. It would be nice if the guide included keyboard shortcuts. I know there's a link you provided explaining how to move and crouch. But it's for convenience.
