I downloaded Notepad++ and went to Plugins > Plugins Admin... > Searched for Hex-Editor. You can use Notepad++ to open the save file, *.dat file and select the Hex-Editor plugin, then search for one of your character names. The values directly above the name have the attributes, gold, and experience. It seems that the save game files are fairly small and easy to change in a hex editor.
