You were above it. The slide only works when you're on even ground, because you're supposed to dodge it by being underneath it.
If you're both just running up a ramp, and the person in front slides, they'll still be grappled as well in most cases.
Sometimes it doesn't seem that way, because it's pretty buggy I think.
