Welcome, Vault Dweller.
So, you want to play Fallout 1: the real beginning, back when the series was still a roleplaying game with teeth. Good news: it holds up. Bad news: the 1997 release doesn’t.

This guide isn’t a walkthrough, it’s an orientation. I’ll help you get set up and prepared to walk the wastes as the devs intended. Perhaps even better.

If you own Fallout 1 on Steam, great, that’s your base. But don’t launch it just yet. The game in its vanilla state is buggy, unbalanced, and missing a ton of content that was originally planned but cut.

That's where Fallout Fixt comes in.

What is Fallout Fixt?
Fallout Fixt is a comprehensive restoration and enhancement mod created by Sduibek. It does three big things:

– Restores cut content (quests, dialogue, encounters, items)
– Fixes hundreds of bugs the original release never patched
– Modernizes the game with quality-of-life improvements like resolution support and improved UI behavior

There are multiple install options, ranging from Purist (bug fixes only) to Full (restoration + balance tweaks). If it’s your first time, you might want to go with Purist so you can enjoy the restored content on later playthroughs.

Quickstart Tips (Without Spoilers)
– Tag Small Guns unless you're doing a gimmick build, they dominate the early game
– Don’t dump Intelligence, it locks you out of quests and dialogue
– Save often, and in multiple slots, especially before risky choices or new areas
– You don’t need Charisma, this isn’t New Vegas
– Don’t be intimidated by the isometric view, you’ll adjust quickly

This is all you need for your first playthrough, literally. Later on, you can dig into a detailed walkthrough to complete all the side quests you might have missed. For that, I recommend The Nearly Ultimate Fallout Guide by Per Jorner.

Oh, yeah. I guess i forgot about the companion buffs and skills that require charisma. Either way i've been playing through with this fix and it's great, Thanks for the guide!

Charisma stat has some uses in NV whereas in FO1 its utterly useless. In NV, some builds tend to lean on speech and barter heavily also there are a couple useful perks such as comprehension/terrifying presence which could be particularly helpful for new players. Lastly, you buff companions with it. In FO1 however, it litteraly does nothing. You don't need it for the number of companions, speech and barter is negligible and you don't get locked out of dialogues.

"You don't need charisma, this isn't New Vegas." Charisma is the most useless special skill in NV and is literally only useful for the first like 10 lvls. lol

It could be due to your monitor's refresh rate. Try running it in 60hertzs.

Is it just me, or are the cutscenes rather full of stuttering? The intro movie before the main menu, and the first cutscene of the old guy - not a good look.

Is there any way to fix the stuttering, or is it just the nature of decades-old video files to no longer be fully supported in higher resolutions?
