1.Download SteamCMD
First of all, you need to donwload the SteamCMD; you can find it here:
http://media.steampowered.com/installer/steamcmd.zip
Of course you need WinRAR or WinZIP to open it.

Now create a folder into your HD called SteamCMD
ex.: C:\SteamCMD

Extract the previous downloaded archive in this folder, and then run steamcmd.exe
You should see something like this:

2.Login via steamcmd.exe
Now run steamcmd.exe and type in:
login *your ID* *your password*
and press enter.

If this is your first time logging in via steamcmd, you will get a message saying that you need to enter a code to validate your Steam credentials.
You will recive this code via email; just copy it and paste it into the steamcmd and press enter.

3. Type in type in type in
Once you are correctly logged in (Logging in user '...' to Steam Public...Logged in OK Waiting for licence info...OK) type in:
force_install_dir C:\MyServers\PE

And then type in:
app_update 237870
This could take a while.
4. Configure your server
Now, let's configure your server!
You should now find the folder C:\myservers\pe\Server\ConfigFiles and there the file ServerConfig:
Right click on it, Open with... and choose WorldPad (Notepad works too, but I first had some format problems and it wasn't very clear).

Now you can choose your configuration using this scheme:

y: numbers you shouldn't change.
x: your preferences, you can change them.
5.It's done!
Finally you can start your server!

Go to C:\myservers\pe\Server and doble click on StartServer.
You will notice that nothing happen, but you should see the process PE_Server.exe in your task manager (CTRL+SHIFT+ESC).
That's it, your server is running!

Now just run Planet Explorers and go to multiplayer, and you will be able to see your Planet's name in the server list!

Sometimes I get an error trying to log to my server by clicking on it in the list, but you can avoid this by going to the LAN tab, and you will see your Planet: just click, enter, and have fun!

Yeah with the latest updates it became way easier! I would say this guide served for a long time, and now you can use it just for settings or to make your life harder =)

It's alot easier to just make your server through host in game then copy the config over ;) Bypass all that steamcmd crap. Cause the game will updates your server through the client as most games on steam! :)

What I wrote below works just fine. Every time version changes. No Problem. Local Operator starts from LAN tab, others use server Name and Internet tab.
Only HOOK, once a Server is started Parameters CANNOT be changed. Period.
Want to change something.. Delete server and start again.
Only other problem would be PortForwarding. Get it sorted.

It's been awhile since I've started a server, but I guess maybe you and/or your friend can have ports problems, try follow this official guide to port-forward your router:

Hope this helps!

Simple trick:
Go to MultyPlayer/Host Panel and configure a server how you like. Test run it localy ..etc.
Go to (PE) /server/configfiles/ServerConfig.conf and copy that file to your server. Same pace.
Run PE_Server.exe with NO parameters. They will be taken from the above config file. Done.
( could add -batchmode to the PE_Server.exe shortcut )
( Server OP joins thro LAN tab )
