Have you seen Truman Show, where everyone sets up the show around the protagonist as they move around? Games are like that. There are exceptions such as Dwarf Fortress with their deep simulations but even that stuff is greatly simplified if you don't directly witness it

Quirky, oh yeah, all that jazz with mods and the like is usually left for the second playthrough when I'm done experiencing the game for what it is! A fun way to add replayability and to see things from a different perspective...
