Wall 1-19
Just use skeletons.
After Wall 8 add 1 level of Soul exchange and mana amplification and at least 1 in Captain's call. Don't forget to buy some captains.
After Wall 12 you can switch to a pure mana build, if you're lacking that: Concentrate Mana(20), Soul exchange(1), mana amplifier(1), Mind sphere(10), Mage guild(4).
After Wall 16 add at least 1 level of Incineration for the damage multiplier.
Wall 20-27
The best damage is Devils, but you have to buy Cultists yourself. Otherwise use Seletons.
For Mana Builds: add Camels after Wall 24.
Don't forget to complete sidequests.
Wall 28-35
Necromanagers make Skeletons great again. Otherwise use Devils. (they still require micro)
Add Mana Music to the Mana build.
Wall 36-47
Cult recruiters mean Devils no longer require micro, so use those.
After Wall 44 you can start using Chain lightning+Sorcerery circle+Bone bombs+Bone royalty+Haunting+Blight ghosts+Herbalism. Use the Goblin Crown for extra damage.
Wall 48-79
After this, every Build uses sacrifices. Boozookas(1 for rupture) and Hell Portal(max) is an evergreen combo now.
Use the lighning strike build or switch to dragons.
After Wall 56 add Volcano to the evergreen combo. (1 to consume rupture)
After Wall 68 add Reverse engineering(1) to the evergreen combo.
Wall 80-87
Add Fracture (max) to the evergreen combo
Use Goblin Grenades+Mimicry and stack damage multipliers. get some dragons to sacrifice goblins for the evergreen combo.
Wall 88-99
Use Archdevils or Gobuchets.
If the wall fights back, use Angels instead.

Wall 36-47 - I was confused about the tip to use Devils. You need to spend 6.5B mana and unlock Entreat before this is going to beat Skeletons and Overseers.

My strategy that pushed through most of the game, including the final wall, was poison ghosts.
What holds back most strategies is the multipliers.

Poison/ghosts gets an INSANE amount of multipliers. First the ghosts get a multiplier on damage, plus the item that boosts ghost damage, this is then multiplied by your generic bonus, then you have bonus poison items, hydras, herbalism, THEN your generic bonus AGAIN. This takes off when you unlock the bugs and the fast-click item. Summon hundreds of bugs which die automatically.

Bugs eventually fall off because they just don't die fast enough. For the final walls ~80+ you switch to maxing out the cultist summoner along with the "support minions get bonus" skill (or the skeleton summoner if you need to deal with pew pew lasers), unlock sorcerers and chain lightning (both just 1 skill point), and now you mass murder your own cultists by holding left click on chain lightning. Unlock additional sorcerers to further multiply your damage
