In the previous episode, USS Montpelier (688 Flight III) destroyed the PLAN submarine wolfpack that was harassing local shipping between Korea and Japan. Our new assignment is to intercept and destroy the PLAN convoy sailing from Qingdao to Hong Kong.

03-OCT-2000  East China Sea

PRIORITY MISSION: Intercept PLAN convoy from Ningbo to Hong Kong.

We dodged PLAN subsurface contacts and maritime patrol planes... only to bump into another one.

04-OCT-2000  Yellow Sea

03:17 Shallow waters

We found, to our dismay, that we are in LESS than 100m of water (71m to be exact) which is barely enough to deploy towed array while submerged. And it's clear we are facing someone equal... Sonar quickly identified our opponent as Victor III, probably a recent PLAN acquisition. We quickly doglegged a torpedo to the north, then east, which was enough to surprise the bogey and sank her.

Later that night we located the convoy.

07:52 Convoy intercepted

Sonar identified Jianghu and Chengdu, escorting 2 x Fuqing transports. But it was probably not that simple. We launched 3 torpedoes and doglegged them in, and sure enough, there was a Romeo submarine hiding just ahead of the convoy. The sub died first, then the two escorts. We then launched two more torpedoes to kill the transports, completing the clean sweep.

Priority Mission Accomplished! COMSUBPAC was of course, very pleased.

18:35 New Mission Received

NEW PRIORITY MISSION: Intercept and destroy PLAN at-sea replenishment group consisting of resupply ship and escort(s) from Shantou to Yellow Sea.

Well, we were in the Yellow Sea, but it's too shallow to fight in. We shall head south...

05-OCT-2000 North of Taipei, Taiwan, East China Sea

20:24 You can't see me

While dodging submerged contacts, we bumped into a PLAN ASW group and was forced to submerge. As we are a bit short on torpedoes, we decided NOT to engage, so we simply turned away and disengaged.

06-OCT-2000   Just North of Taipei, Taiwan, East China Sea

22:39 Target Intercepted

We have located the at-sea replenishment group, which is composed of only 3 ships: 2 x Jiangwei escorts and 1 x Dajiang tender. Though based on prior experience, there was probably a submarine hiding among them.

We doglegged 3 torpedoes toward them, and sure enough we found a Kilo hiding ahead of the group. The two escorts and the sub were sunk. We fired another torpedo to chase down the Dajiang, while we had to evade a torpedo that may come a little close. But Dajiang was sunk, and we disengaged.  Priority Mission Accomplished! COMSUBPAC was pleased.

30:00 New Mission Received

NEW PRIORITY MISSION: Intercept PLAN convoy moving from Ningbo to Hong Kong. (Again?)

Which will have to go in the NEXT episode.

In the hypothetical Cold Waters (DotMod) Y2000 NATO campaign, Taiwan declared independence, and Great Britain delayed returning Hong Kong to China after massive protests. China threatened retaliation, which crashed the Asian economy. Russia decided to have an arms fire sale to China... and China is buying naval assets (along with Russian "advisors") to take over the South China Sea and its resources, plus attacks on nearby countries. NATO decided to intervene... and the first response was US Navy Submarines... Specifically, USS Montpelier, a Flight III 688-class nuclear attack submarine...
