"Called "Paint Tetrominoes" in the NYT Magazine (and the first of a series of such puzzles), but fits perfectly within the world of Islands of Insight.... or would, except that this puzzle, as it is, is underclued! The intended unique solution maximizes the number of dark cells — how might you fix the puzzle rules to compensate using only those rules found in-game?"

Add "all white regions have area 29" and now it can be filled out uniquely.

Except that in the NYT puzzles, you start out completely blank. Therefore, the grid is never supposed to have any pre-placed dark or light tiles/regions.

...unless you're trying to solve the puzzle, in which case, yes, it's technically trivial to do so, but I recommend reading the description to find the real challenge. It is not in solving the puzzle, but codifying it.
