In Norse mythology, Loki's imprisonment was a consequence of his role in orchestrating the death of Baldur. After Baldur's death, the gods were furious and sought to punish Loki. He fled to a mountain and built a house with four doors so he could watch in all directions. During the day, he transformed into a salmon and hid in the river called Franang's Falls, but he was eventually discovered by Odin from his high seat, Hlidskjalf.

The gods captured Loki and brought him to a cave. They took Loki's sons, Váli and Narfi, and transformed Váli into a wolf, who then killed Narfi. The gods used Narfi's entrails to bind Loki to three stones. The goddess Skadi then placed a venomous snake above Loki's head, which dripped venom onto his face. Loki's wife, Sigyn, stayed by his side, holding a bowl to catch the venom. This torment was to last until Ragnarök, the end of the cosmos, when Loki would break free and join the forces opposing the gods.
