In the previous episode, USS Montpelier (688 Flight III) destroyed the PLAN amphib landing force heading for Taipei, Taiwan. Our new assignment was to head toward South Vietnam and sink a PLAN battlegroup that can threaten friendly convoys.

27-SEP-2000  East China Sea

Priority Mission: Head to Cam Ranh (South China Sea) and sink the PLAN battlegroup, prioritize ships with anti-ship missiles.

We managed to slip through the gap and avoid contact, and set up near Cam Ranh.

28-SEP-2000 South China Sea, just east of Cam Ranh

01:48 Target intercepted

A surface contact left the port and we intercepted it.

However, it was only 2 ships, a Jiangwei FFG, and a Luhu DDG. I thought this was an ASW group, and let it go, only to be informed that it was indeed our target. ARGH!

PRIORITY MISSION FAILED.

NEW PRIORITY MISSION:  Go to Subic Bay Philippines and protect it from enemy subs that will land commandos.

04:15  Chance at Redemption?

No less than 5 enemy contacts approach us... 1 surface, and 4 sub-surface.

We managed to disengage from the surface contact, which consisted of two ASW ships.

06:35 Engaging too many subs

We then engaged all four sub-surface contacts... sinking 5 Romeos and 1 Han, over the next 48 hours. Six torpedoes, six kills.

Only to be told NONE of these were the priority mission target.

17:24 Forced withdrawal

With NO torpedo left, we were forced to withdraw to Guam for reloads.

20:55 Arriving at Guam

We reloaded our standard loadout: 20 torpedoes and 6 MOSS decoys, then we left port, and was informed that Subic Bay base suffered a PLAN commando attack and was heavily damaged.

PRIORITY MISSION FAILED

21:44  New Mission Received

NEW PRIORITY MISSION: PLAN submarine wolfpack harassed local shipping between Korea and Japan. Deal with them.

Which will have to wait until the next episode.

In the hypothetical Cold Waters (DotMod) Y2000 NATO campaign, Taiwan declared independence, and Great Britain delayed returning Hong Kong to China after massive protests. China threatened retaliation, which crashed the Asian economy. Russia decided to have an arms fire sale to China... and China is buying naval assets (along with Russian "advisors") to take over the South China Sea and its resources, plus attacks on nearby countries. NATO decided to intervene... and the first response was US Navy Submarines...  USS Montpelier, a Flight III 688-class nuclear attack submarine...
