Welcome to episode 1 of a new series: Y2K War with China.

In the hypothetical Cold Waters (DotMod) Y2000 NATO campaign, Taiwan declared independence, and Great Britain delayed returning Hong Kong to China after massive protests. China threatened retaliation, which crashed the Asian economy. Russia decided to have an arms fire sale to China... and China is buying naval assets (along with Russian "advisors") to take over the South China Sea and its resources, plus attacks on nearby countries. NATO decided to intervene... and the first response was US Navy Submarines... specifically, USS Montpelier, a Flight III 688-class nuclear attack submarine...

This is NOT the first time I've ran through this campaign, but the previous times I've used the USS Seawolf, which I now considered a bit overpowered.

24-SEP-2000  Guam Naval Base

PRIORITY MISSION: PLAN sub wolfpacks are hunting Vietnamese civilian fishing vessels to put pressure on the Vietnamese government. We are to clear Gulf of Tonkin of PLAN wolfpack.

We unloaded 8 Harpoons, then loaded 4 MOSS decoys, and 4 Mk 48 Mod 6s. (20 Mk 48, 6 MOSS)

We proceed at transit speed through the gap between southern Taiwan and northern Philippines. We avoided patrols, and approached Gulf of Tonkin, barely missing subsurface contact departing from Yulin naval base on Hainan Island. There is a subsurface contact in the Gulf of Tonkin.

We slow from slow transit to 5 kt, and initiate silent running. We conducted a surface check, only saw one merchant. We then found S2, a Song. We are expecting at least one more sub. And it is too close to shoot for now. We opened the range, then dogleg'ed a torpedo toward it.

As the torpedo approached Song, we detected a launch transient NOT from Song. It was the other sub, quickly ID'ed as another Song. We got another Mk48 dogleg'ed toward that.

Both contacts were sunk.

We can detect no other contact anywhere near us (the M1 merchant had long ago left the area toward the east). We reloaded the expended tube and disengaged.

COMSUBPAC was quite pleased.

And we got our next priority mission... We must sink the PLAN amphib landing force heading for Taipei, Taiwan that may have just left Ningbo.
