No problem, it's easier with game paused, hover over an individual worker, press R, this will cause only that worker to retreat. Then when the threat has passed, in this case, the worm, press R on the retreated worker on the platform to cancel their retreat.

Please elaborate how to cancel retreats.
I have not done this before and not seen how to.

Just retreat everyone individually except one miner, and keep him mining below it. Then when it passes by, you can cancel retreat on everyone and go ahead with the day as before
