Unity Mod Manager (UMM)
Unity Mod Manager (often abbreviated to UMM) is the most often used mod loader/manager for Railroader. If you are to find mods to download on Nexus Mods (nexusmods.com), the Official Railroader Discord Server, or the unofficial Railroader Modding Discord Server, most of them will require Unity Mod Manager. Please note that to download UMM you will need a Nexus Mods Account

How to Install UMM
  • Step 1: Download UMM by going to Nexus Mods and searching Unity Mod Manager or by using this link: https://www.nexusmods.com/site/mods/21.You should get a zip archive that looks like this:

  • Step 2: Extract the files from the archive. you should get a folder with the name: UnityModManagerInstaller

  • Step 3: Go into the aforementioned folder and run the UnityModManager.exe file using WINE. You should get a window that looks like this:

  • Step 4: Click on the button that says "Game:", this will show a dropdown menu in alphabetical order of every game supported; find the option for railroader and select it. Next it will prompt you to find the directory location of your Railroader installation. Usually it will be found under "~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Railroader".
If you cant find it then ♥♥♥♥ off and google it or something idk.

  • Step 5: Now click the big "Install" button. Make sure you select the "DoorstopProxy" installation method.

  • Step 6: Add this line to the launch options of railroader:
    "WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winhttp=n,b" %command%"
This will allow UMM to work properly in linux.

Installing mods through UMM

Installing mods is easy enough. First off, find the mod you want to install and download it. UMM mods are packaged in zip files. In this case i'll use Map Enhancer as an example as it is a really good mod and great for quality of life. Go to the "Mods" tab in UMM and drag and drop the zip archive in the zone that says "Drop zip files here".

As you can see on the bottom of this screenshot, it shows that the mod has been successfully unpacked and installed.
Rail-loader
Rail-loader is a mod loader that offers deeper changes to the game's core, such as map modifications and core functionality changes. For this reason it is used less often.

Installing Rail-loader
  • Step 1: Download Rail-loader by going to the website: https://railroader.stelltis.ch/
  • Step 2: Install Rail-loader. Follow the steps provided by the website. Make sure to have the Railloader.exe file in the game's directory to make things easier

Installing Mods Through Rail-loader
Normally, under Windows®, you can install mods through Rail-loader by simply dragging and dropping the mod you want onto the Rail-loader.exe file. However, since that is such a niche and stupid feature it isn't supported in Linux (at least from my own testing). To install mods through Rail-loader please follow the next steps.
  • Step 1: Download the mod you want to install. It should be packaged as a zip archive.
  • Step 2: Extract the zip archive and drag the files onto the "Mods" folder within the game's directory. This folder should have been created by either UMM or Rail-loader.

Ooh, thanks for this guide. Are you aware if these steps (or, at least, the UMM mods) work even with the Steam Deck?

that unfortunately did not work and kept complaining about it not being a proper file or something or other.

Yes, I use wine. Though you can use proton by clicking the "Add a Game" button on the bottom left of steam, selecting game properties --> Compatibility and selecting any proton version.

For rail-loader, you are using wine to run the exe?
