Chronological Order
In this section I will show you the chronological play order in which to tackle these games and side stories. I'll also add notes to the materials if there's any important information that needs to be said, as well as show the in universe calendar dates that the games and the supplementary materials take place in. The S in the timeline dates stands for "Septian Calendar" named after the Septian Church, which is like our real world Vatican Church, but cooler.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Gaiden: The Tale of Loewe.
Timeline: S.1192-1203
This manga takes place prior and concurrently to Trails in the Sky First and Second Chapter.
Note: I've said it before, but I'll say it again. I strongly recommend against reading this manga if you haven't played through the Sky games and Trails to Azure yet. The manga will spoil the events in the Sky games, as well as spoil a character that was introduced in Azure.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky. Also known as Trails in the Sky: FC (First Chapter).
Timeline: S.1202
The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky FC (The Legend of Heroes VI: Sora no Kiseki FC) is the first game on the continent of Zemuria, set in the Kingdom of Liberl in the year S.1202, 50 years after the Orbal Revolution makes magic accessible to everyone through the use of orbments, enabling new developments and simplifying many aspects from common life to warfare, while complicating others. Trails in the Sky FC establishes most of the world for future installments in the series and sets up the plot for the next game, Trails in the Sky SC. In Trails in the Sky FC, the game follows protagonists Estelle Bright and her adopted brother Joshua, who journey through the country of Liberl to train to become senior Bracers, members of a non-governmental multinational organization that acts to keep the peace and protect civilians.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC.
Timeline: S.1202-1203
The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC (The Legend of Heroes VI: Sora no Kiseki SC) is the second installment in the Trails series and the second installment of the Liberl arc, set in Liberl. "SC" stands for "Second Chapter". Second Chapter, takes the series from S.1202 to early S.1203.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero Pre-Story: The Ring of Judgment.
Timeline: S.1203-1204
Even though this is a prequel story to Trails from Zero, it technically takes place before Trails in the Sky the 3rd, and it mainly focus on Estelle and Joshua. There is a chapter in the manga that foreshadows an event that happened in Trails from Zero, which takes place in S.1204, which gives it a connection as a prequel story to Zero, but I leave it at that for you to find out for yourselves.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 3rd.
Timeline: S.1203
The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 3rd (The Legend of Heroes VI: Sora no Kiseki the 3rd) is the third installment in the Trails series and is the epilogue to the Liberl arc while also setting up lore and plot points for future installments. This game takes place half a year after the events of Trails in the Sky SC. The game follows Septian Church member Kevin Graham, who is sent to an otherworldly dimension. Other characters from the series are similarly summoned to this dimension, and Kevin works with them to investigate the realm and how to escape it, coming to terms with his past along the way.
Note: Do Not Sleep On This Game! It's very important to the overarching story of the series, mainly the Memory Doors that are found in this game. The Memory Doors are there to set up future plot points, lore, or introducing characters that are important in later arcs in the series. So I highly recommended that you go out your way to complete all the Doors. If you need any help with the Memory Doors, there is a guide on the Trails in the Sky the 3rd community hub, under guide that tells you where they're located at and the requirements to do them.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Drama CD: Advanced Chapter.
Timeline: S.1203
This drama CD takes place after Sky the 3rd since characters remember the events of that game.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero.
Timeline: S.1204
The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero (The Legend of Heroes: Zero no Kiseki) is the fourth installment in the Trails series and the first game of the Crossbell arc, set in Crossbell. The game follows Lloyd Bannings and his colleagues Elie MacDowell, Randy Orlando, and Tio Plato. The four form the Special Support Section, a newly formed department of the Crossbell police.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure Drama CD - Road to the Future.
Timeline: S.1204, June.
This drama CD is like a bridge that connects Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure together. It takes place directly after the ending of Trails from Zero, and explain what the members of the SSS were up to between the events of the games.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure.
Timeline: S.1204
The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure (The Legend of Heroes: Ao no Kiseki) is the fifth installment in the Trails series and the second game of the Crossbell arc, set in Crossbell. Following the events of Trails from Zero, the Special Support Section find themselves with new members and new duties. However, rising tensions in Crossbell along with pressure from two neighboring political powers threaten both the safety of their home, as well as the integrity of their team.
Chronological Order Part 2
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel.
Timeline: S.1204
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel (The Legend of Heroes: Sen no Kiseki) is the first installment of the Erebonia arc, set in Erebonia. It's the sixth installment in the main Trails series of games. Chronologically, the game runs parallel to some of the events of the Crossbell duology, starting in March S.1204 - roughly around the same time as the third chapter of Trails from Zero. You play as Rean Schwarzer, a first year freshman who enrolls at Thors Military Academy and became a part of Class VII, an experimental study group course that forced the nobles and commoners into one class section. Over the next six months course, Rean and his classmates find themselves lodged deep within Erebonia's complex political struggle as it begins to fracture over worsening class conflict, discovering hidden agendas and terrorist plots, threatening to enact chaos across the empire.
Note: Play through the game until after Chapter 3 to read Trails of Cold Steel: Links of Hearts Case A.R.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel: Links of Hearts Case: A.R.

Note: After reading the manga, play through TOCS 1 again until after Chapter 6, then check out the Trails of Cold Steel Drama CD - Returning Home.

Rean Schwarzer, now an instructor at Thors Military Academy's Branch Campus, is the homeroom teacher of the new Class VII, consisting of Juna Crawford, Kurt Vander, Altina Orion, and later Ash Carbide, and Musse Egret. While teaching his students, Rean is ordered by the Imperial government to resolve numerous conflicts arising all across Erebonia.

Tips for the Trails series!
In this section here, I will go over some tips to help newcomers get into the Trails series.

1.) Play in the original Japanese release order.
The reason behind this is because the stories of the games are told in a linear narrative from the dates that they were release in Japan originally. Meaning that you'll have to play them in release order, so that you won't get spoiled. In the section above this one I've listed the chronological order in which to tackle the mainline video games as well as the supplementary materials, but if you just want to focus on the mainline games, then the order goes like this:
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky/Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter (Remake)
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 3rd
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak II
  • The Legend of Heroes: Kai no Kiseki -Farewell, O Zemuria-

2.) Make sure to take breaks, while playing through the Trails series.
I love the Trails series as much as the next guy, but even I sometimes need to take a break from it, because the Trails series burnout is real. What I mean by this is that The Legend of Heroes: Trails series are story and dialogue heavy JRPGs which could take you up to around 40 to 100 hours to complete each game, depending on how much you do in them. It's not a video game series, in which you can binge it back to back without taking breaks, or else you're going to experience burnout. I recommend playing through an arc, then taking a break from the series to play another game, then come back to it later when you're feeling fully recharged and ready to jump back into another arc. For the Trails of Cold Steel arc, since that's the longest arc, I recommend that you take breaks if you can, especially after the Act Finale of Cold Steel II since there is another chapter and epilogue after it. If you're worried about being lost of where you left off at, then fear not. All the games comes with a notebook that the main character carry with them, and that it automatically writes down your progress through the main story and side quests. Just check the notebook if you ever get lost in the story. You can even watch video summaries of previous arcs that you've completed off of YouTube to refresh yourself before jumping into another arc, if that's what you want to do. Also make sure to rest your eyes, stretch, exercise, eat, and stay hydrated. Do whatever you have to do, so that you've the energy to stay locked in.

3.) Take your time.
This follows tip number 2, but always remember to take your time and go at your own pace. It's never good to bum-rush these games, just from the fear of not catching up because of spoilers, or that you feeling fatigue and want to finish it quickly. The games are best enjoyed when you're in a good mood to play and take your time with them. If your feeling tired, or just not in the mood to play them on certain days, then don't force yourself to. But do remember to come back to it, even if you have to dedicate at least an hour to it.

4.) Get off the grid.
It goes without saying, but The Legend of Heroes: Trails series is a very story driven video game series. Which means it's very infamous for the huge amount of spoilers that a player can get exposed to. In these games you'll hear about character's names, their titles, the organizations they belong to, their affiliations, their betrayals, their secret identities revealed, the status of their fate, and so on. You will get spoiled if you not careful!💀 That's why I recommend that you play these games completely blind and in chronological order. If you must play with a guide, make sure it's a spoiler free one. Here some tips for getting off the grid when it comes to Trails content:
  • Beware of The Kiseki Wiki. While the Kiseki Wiki is a treasure trove of knowledge of all things Trails, it's also breeding ground for major spoilers. So tread lightly, or avoid it like the plague.
  • Do not search up Trails content on a search engine, and especially on YouTube and other social media sites because you could be spoiled by the recommendation algorithm. If you must do so, make sure to delete your browsing history and videos involving Trails content, and avoid the comment section like the plague.
  • I know this one's going to be hard, but do not join and talk about Trails in a Trails community online because they could spoiled anything in the games.
  • And be careful of the promotional images that you will find on some of the games' box arts and other images floating around on the internet because of spoilers.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails at Sunrise, known in Japanese as Akatsuki no Kiseki, is a 2016 role-playing gacha game developed by UserJoy Technology and published by Nihon Falcom. It is a spin-off of the Trails series, itself a part of The Legend of Heroes franchise, and was first released in Japan for browsers. Trails at Sunrise was later ported to Windows, PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, and Nintendo Switch. The PlayStation and Switch versions were discontinued in 2022. Trails at Sunrise takes place in September S.1204, which corresponds with the Intermission of Trails to Azure. The game is centered around two bracers that fulfill requests for the Bracer Guild branches in Crossbell, Liberl, and Remiferia. Although this game never got an official English release, Trails into Reverie refers to this game under the name The Legend of Heroes: Trails at Sunrise during the Who Wants to Be a Mirannaire? minigame. Given the information that I found on the internet, this game is considered non-canon, but if you still want to read the summary of the story, then click the link down below to take you to the Kiseki Wiki page, where you can read it at your leisure. https://kiseki.fandom.com/wiki/The_Legend_of_Heroes:_Akatsuki_no_Kiseki/Story

In-game supplemental material.
Before I say anything, I would like for you all to look at this video made by the late great KillScottKill also known as Daniel Scott Tijerina. In this video he talks about the importance of the in-universe books that are found in the Trails series. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=165ME1i-VEs&t=612s
https://kiseki.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Books
It's like Scott said in the video, these in-game books are important to the series. Again, they're 100% optional, but you'll miss out on a lot of things he had listed in the video. But there is at least one book series that I strongly recommended that you should read, and that is The Black Records that are found in Trails of Cold Steel II. They're part of a hidden side quest; there are a total of 5 of them, and they're only available on New Game Plus. It's important that you go out your way to collect them is because Trails of Cold Steel III expects you to do so. What I mean by this is that when you collect and translate all the books throughout the game, eventually you'll get to a point in the game during the epilogue where a "certain scene" happens that has lore and story heavy spoilers. Later in Cold Steel III they will bring that scene back up as well as the contents that are found in the Black Records into the story. So yes, it's very important that you do them, or you'll be lost in context. Just want to give you a heads up. If you don't have the time or patience to play a second play through, then just type in "Trails of Cold Steel II Black Records" on YouTube after you beat the game, to see the scene. Hopefully they'll show you the translated Black Records so you can read what inside it. You can also read it in the Kiseki Wiki if you want, just be careful of massive spoilers that are found on there.

The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails, known as Nayuta no Kiseki in Japan, is a 2012 action role-playing game developed by Nihon Falcom. The game is a part of the Trails series, itself a part of the larger The Legend of Heroes series. It was first released in Japan for PlayStation Portable. A high-definition remaster was released in Japan for PlayStation 4 and Windows in 2021 and for Nintendo Switch in 2022. This version was localized in English by NIS America and released in September 2023. The story follows Nayuta Herschel, a young aspiring researcher aiming to see what's further beyond the known world, who was just returning to Remnant Island for the summer, when he and his childhood friend Cygna Alhazen find themselves in the world of Lost Heaven through the guidance of the otherworldly fairy Noi, as they get involved in a plot to stop a madman and his right-hand man from destroying Lost Heaven. The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails is set in a different world than the mainline Trails titles. The game makes no mention of the continent of Zemuria and makes use of a new calendar rather than the Septian Calendar. However, the president of Nihon Falcom Corporation's Toshihiro Kondo have stated that Nayuta might have some connections to the mainline Trails series. Basically his pulling a Zelda/Kingdom Hearts.😂 Regardless it's completely standalone, and you don't need to play the other Trails games to understand this one. I wholeheartedly recommend you try this game out, it's really fun!

I want to say that I really appreciate you all for checking this guide out and becoming fans or would-be fans of this great series. Again, thank you. Also let me know if there are any more canonical supplementary works that I can add to this guide.

If your talking about playing all the games to understand the overarching story then Trails and Kingdom Hearts are similar in that regard, and I wouldn't say that type of story telling is more normalised, since mainstream jrpgs and other video games are typically standalone. Sure, I can do that, I don't know how much help it will be, but I'll try. Thank you for bringing this to my attention PeanutShoes.:poc:

You're welcome PeanutShoes, I'm glad that you enjoyed my guide and that it was helpful to you. Yeah, heh, ha, ha. I know fomo is big in the Trails series, especially when it come to the npcs and some players wanting to jump into the newest entry, but besides the Black Records the books and newspapers are 100% optional if you just wanted to play through the main story, but you'll miss out on all that buildup and foreshadowing of themes, locations, and characters that will be reveal in later arcs. Thank you, I appreciate you as well for taking the time read my guide. And yes, I wanted to make sure to set up the supplementary materials in a way to show the readers the year that they were released and the chronological order from which they reside in. It took some doing, but I'm glad that I set it up that way.

Firstly, big thank you for taking time to compile this incredibly detailed guide. The little nuggets of info and links help. Now you say some things are "100% optional, but you'll miss out on a lot of things"... FOMO go brrr XD I do appreciate that you mark the critical pieces and what parts of them in particular that should be experienced. While I appreciate their taking time to develop a new character's story Natuya in their own setting I do feel KH story telling is becoming a bit more normalised in jrpgs today and I hope it doesn't happen to trails.

Would you consider adding a section on how to best approach the series for newcomers, perhaps with tips for avoiding spoilers?
