One-sitting Indie Horrors
By Wizarsh
Instead of re-watching Love Death Robots, Black Mirror or Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities, Sometimes it's nice to sit down with a game that you can start and finish in one session. So these games would take approximately between 30 mins to 2 hours, depending on the player.

The following games are Indie Horror games I have played from jump-scary survival games to chill/creepy walking sims. Some games may have drowned in popularity, a lot are underrated hidden gems.

Quick Review:
I went in blind not knowing what to expect = zero regrets.
A mysterious, uncanny, unsettling and unique unforgettable experience.
Immaculate 80s style, Analog & Lovecraftian vibe, creative racing game overall!

The Mortuary Assistant
Having completed your degree in mortuary sciences, you have taken on an apprenticeship at River Fields Mortuary. Late one night, you are called into work to handle some embalmings. But there is something different about these bodies because there is something different about you. The phone rings with the Mortician on the other end. The rumors are true, and you can not leave.

Quick Review:
Mortician Simulator.
While it was fun learning about the embalming processes, This is probably one of the creepiest and scariest game I have played. Highly recommended for poopy pants.

How long it took me to beat: ~2 hours ,but it can take up to 8+ hours to discover all endings/lore.

Amanda the Adventurer
You are Riley, and have just inherited your Aunt Kate’s house. In the attic, There is a stack of VHS tapes next to an old TV set. The tapes seem to be episodes of an early 2000’s era children’s cartoon they have never seen before. Intrigued, You pop the first tape into the VCR.

Quick Review:
Dora the Explorer was one of my main childhood shows, I've always wished she answered back when I spoke to her. With Amanda, that wish is longer just a dream...
Recommended for puzzle lovers, secrets hunters and unsettling lore enthusiasts.

Distraint 2

Quick Review:
I played this during a low point during covid quarantine days. This is one of the few games that got me tears drop. A psychological horror game that has jump emotion scares

Void Whispers

You are a broadcast engineer working at a radio station. Interacting with the public, playing some music and broadcasting news, all while mysterious events unfold in the sky.

Quick Review:
Radio DJ simulator.
20 mins is all it needed to represent a pure sci-fi horror of dread and isolation. The buildup on tension and suspense is great. You can even just sit back and have a cozy night shift.

Maybe there is a reason why the universe is silent.

How long it took me to beat: ~20 minutes

The Windows Are Gone

Quick Review:
A masterpiece and a psychological horror that I look for. The low-poly visuals ,sound design and storytelling got me hooked and goosebumped.
It starts of as an Unpacking simulator of a grieving man that slowly descends into an unsettling madness.

How long it took me to beat: less than an hour

DREAM LOGIC

What is a Liminal Space?.

Quick Review:
If a person is trying to get into liminal space themed games, this might be the best introduction. The atmosphere, ambience and music are liminally solid. For a short game, it has variety and interesting sequences - You can relax, you can get creeped out by the eerieness, you can feel lonely, you can absolutely vibe with some banging music, you can get very stressed.

How long it took me to beat: ~45 minutes

Mouthwashing
A story set in a spaceship through space. Four crew members and a captain name Curly. What is Curly capable of?

Quick Review:
Nominated Best Narrative. This game stuck with me weeks even after finishing it.

How long it took me to beat: 2 hours 30 mins

Murder House

Quick Review:
Experience 80s slasher movie on the PS1. This game is a great example of "if it ain't broke, dont fix it" in terms of gameplay and horror tropes, and it truly felt like a horror time machine. Plus the ending had a nice twist that can be both cliche and original.

How long it took me to beat: 2 hours 20 mins

Water Delivery
You are a water delivery boy doing your quiet neighborhood a service, but then you realise, not all is as it seems.

Quick Review:
Right, this one is biased because I'm a Filipino and there aren't many horror games set in the Philippines on Steam. That is basically the only reason why it's on my favorites list, plus the environment felt nostalgic. If you're Filipino its recommended to play with Tagalog language for some giggles.

The game starts off as a normal Delivery simulator, then turns into an escape game. I enjoyed playing this game. My only gripe during the delivery stages is that why don't we as a business not have a trolley to carry all the water jugs at once. Trigger warning involving children btw.

How long it took me to beat: 2 hours +more to get other endings/achievements

The Cabin Factory
Welcome to The Cabin Factory - as a newly hired Cabin Inspector your job is to inspect the cabins and determine whether or not they are haunted.

Quick Review:
This game is an Anomaly-hunting game, with Story mode! It managed to spin the genre in creative and novel ways. Seriously. The premise of the game is clever and clearly took inspirations from Exit 8, liminal games etc. It looks good, spooks good and feels good.

How long it took me to beat: ~60 minutes

Bad Parenting 1: Mr Red Face
You are Ron the child, and you try protect your family from Mr Red Face

Quick Review:
The game tells a dark story from the eyes of a child. It is charming as well as jarring. While the gameplay was quick and fun, the story was sad and upsetting but did not let us down in the end.
However, The real jumpscare/horror is as of February 2025, upon reading the reviews and discussions, I've learnt that the developer is a predator that should not be supported. If you want to separate art/artist, please play the game for free (google Badparenting game free) or buy then refund when done.

Welcome to Kowloon
You are a young student, where the first and most urgent desire is to find cheap housing.

Quick Review:
This game gained a spot in my Favorites due to its level design. The game is set in Kowloon which is supposed to be a densely populated city, and you navigate through Mysterious backstreets and cramped alleyways, giving an immersive claustrophobia and isolation and a feeling of being watched constantly.

How long it took me to beat: ~40 minutes
Good/Must Play
Akai Onna
You\re a student, who is on his way home late at night when you encounter a woman in red.
Since that day you have felt someone's eyes on you.

Quick Review:
For Grainy VHS short Japanese horror walking simulator games fans. You'll get some creeps, thick atmosphere and simple but effective audio. The good ending was a bit out of the way though.

How long it took me to beat: ~36 minutes

Terror in the Kitchen

You cannot quit, and your boss cannot fire you.
Because you are unable to find another job, and your boss cannot find another employee.
Because nobody wants to work in this restaurant.
You may be wondering why. It is up to you to uncover the answer.

Quick Review:
Cleaning simulator.
Short, chill and relaxing closer in sushi restaurant. No jumpscares but gradually gets hella creepy that makes you go "wtf is/was that". Also read the "Key Features" under the game description.

How long it took me to beat: ~50 minutes

Barbotine
You have terrible social anxiety, insecurity and agoraphobia. You go to a party. The party did not end well for you

Quick Review:
PSX style, Silent Hill inspired atmposhere, and a satisfying fluid combat that represents the brutal battles of your gradual descent into mental insanity.

How long it took me to beat: ~20 minutes

Iron Lung
You are in claustrophobic one-man submarine nicknamed the "Iron Lung," you must blindly navigate an ocean of blood to take photographs of key locations, and hope whatever lives below doesn't find you.

There is only a single porthole on the sub, and it needs to be closed due to depth pressure, so you have to navigate purely via an incomplete map, proximity sensors, sound, and a primitive external camera which can be used to take the pictures you need to complete your mission, or to get a grainy low resolution visual of what's happening outside.

Quick Review:
immersive

Summer of '58

Quick Review:
Like investigating mysterious locales, reading diaries, & scouring old photos for clues? We've got a camp for you! Do all of this & more in a screamfest with no battery management + a coherent story.

TELEFORUM
Journalist Walter Martins ended his life during the broadcast of “TELEFORUM”, a now-canceled TV program.
You’re visiting the apartment of his widow - to console the grieving woman and shine some light on this awful story…
But that’s not the main reason why you’re here.

Quick Review:
The creepy story grips your interest that gets you thinking what the hell happened here. Atmospheric but story's too vague and had potential for more dread. Good for Analog and FMV fans.

How long it took me to beat: ~50 minutes

Slender: The Arrival
The official commercial remake for the original "Slender: The Eight Pages" short survival horror game.
As of 2024, the devs announced of a 10th Anniversary update that includes multiplayer, new chapters, etc.

Quick Review:
With a much higher production quality, more fleshed out gameplay deep lore and classic spooks, this is the best Slender game out there.

How long it took me to beat: ~2hours ,but has high replay potential and completionist targets that can take you up to +6 hours.

Paratopic

Quick Review:
Aside from me not understanding the ending. The game offered an oppressive atmosphere, fever-dream like sequences, nice retro style and unsettlingly strange.

How long it took me to beat: ~1 hour 30 minutes

Milk outside a bag of milk outside a bag of milk

Quick Review:
A psychologically horrifying and depressing :( Visual Novel.

How long it took me to beat: ~1 hour 30 minutes

BABBDI

Quick Review:
An open world strange game. Not fully horror, but sort of creepy. My anxiety slowly turned to weirdly peaceful that I forget the main goal is to escape the city. Atmosphere feels cold, and relies heavily on liminal space which I really like.

How long it took me to beat: ~1 hour 30 minutes
Good/Must Play (2)
The Space Between

Quick Review:
This played more like a european arthouse film, and appeals more to modern artsy or philosophical people. An interactive poetry that demands attention rather than seeking to entertain.
The dialogue was extremely slow and ruined the experience for me, even though it was an artistic choice. But the last act made up for it. I was disturbed. It was jarring, creepy, surreal and leaves you more questions.

How long it took me to beat: ~40 minutes

KunKunNight

Quick Review:
I saw the price tag and review statistics of Overwhelmingly positive, that was all it took for me to buy the game. Anyway, this game is poorly made. But It was a relatively FUNky horror game.
For context after researching who tf this was about, this game is a fan project based on one of the most influential Chinese meme of all times - a talentless pretentious Chinese singer, dancer, rapper, and a self-proclaimed basketball player. Cai Xukun.

How long it took me to beat: ~1 hour

Psalm 5:9-13
This horror game is a first-person walking simulator with a VHS effect and a tense atmosphere, explore the location, find anomalies, and move on. Frightening things will await you along the way, are you ready to face THIS?

Quick Review:
Game sounds good and looks good (VHS effect good). Has some really good and loud jumpscares. The story felt non-exisent, just like Psalm 5:13. But maybe that is the point.

How long it took me to beat: ~25 minutes

Unspoken

Quick Review:
The game is good, mostly good reviews. Cry of Fear vibes A+. Very nice effective jumpscares! and atmosphere. What put me off is the game breaking bugs that gets you stuck and since there's no save, you start over again. I bugged out 3 times :(. Not the best UI. Story can be messy but it works. But still a good game looking past these.

How long it took me to beat: ~40 minutes

Bite Size Terrors: Erobos Heaven
You start to pray to a god, with sheer panic you don't think of who.
Answering to your Prayers, you get teleported into Salvation's land.
But..
What or Who answered your Prayer?

Quick Review:
I've seen Skinamarink and this game captured that vibe indeed. I loved the extremely liminal location. This game got me thinking the whole time what situation I am supposed to be in and just play along with it, which is good.

How long it took me to beat: ~30 minutes

Rental

Quick Review:
The atmosphere and art style was nostalgic. This short and sweet game had some creepy and unnerving tones where the gameplay felt inspired by early resident evil and maybe silent hill with no jumpscares. The second half of the game felt underwhelming however.

How long it took me to beat: ~30 minutes

No one lives under the lighthouse
READ ABOUT THIS GAME IN STORE PAGE FIRST

Quick Review:
Can't have a lighthouse themed game without lovecraft/eldritch themes. This game achieved horror and suspense with no reliance on jumpscares. This game has a high replayability to get all achievements and endings. Best lighthouse sim.

How long it took me to beat: 2 hours. 4 hours for completionists

[Bober Bros] It's Just A Prank

Quick Review:
This is a story about three kids playing pranks on each other. So the story involved some light hearted moments like friendship, whoopie cushions and BOBER. This however is amazingly juxtaposed by dialogues that induces anxiety. What makes this more horrifying is how believable/tragically relatable this tale can be.

Kiosk
Step into the role of a night shift worker at a small fast food kiosk. Your predecessor vanished under mysterious circumstances, leaving you to uncover what happened.

Quick Review:
Fast food simulator.
The story is very simple or can be described as bland. The jumpscares were ok. The highlight of this game is it's gameplay loop - a cooking sim with room for goof and some immersion.

Senchu
It's the apocalypse for resources, Fresh Inc. vowed to save world hunger. You're the employee

Quick Review:
Gameplay is a simple walking simulator. There is a story and it's weird that it feels like a psychedelic trip. The themes are surreal, slight cosmic horror, and liminal. The game also felt very amateurish, but there's a charm in that.

How long it took me to beat: ~70 minutes

Night Bus
You're a bus driver in 1990s New Zealand

Quick Review:
Bus driver simulator.
A fun quirky game with high replayability. Do you pick up all passengers? Ignore the signs? each choice you make will determine which ending out of 5 you'll get. Very ominous and eerie short driving experience.

How long it took me to beat: ~20 minutes, 100 minutes for all achievements

Cave Crawler
Using the newly developed Cave Crawler drone, you navigate The Cave to help find missing persons, but something isn't right with these caverns.

Quick Review:
Go in blind and immerse yourself as the operator of this Robot drone in the caverns. In this game that is heavily inspired by analog horror, the caves are nicely atmospheric and the lore is mysterious. It did not feel as dreadful as it shouldve been though.

Seybul Tech
Seybul Tech lures you into a voyage through a realm in-between, where unsettling artistry, haunting ambiance, and unique melodies meld together..

Quick Review:
A dollar for an excellent liminal labyrinth is c-liminally good. Sounds and lighting, and level designs are great. Highly recommended for those liminally inclined individuals for a quick liminal fix.

Urayama

Episodic
The games on this list fall under a 'Series' where each 'Episodes' can be played as a standalone.

The Lancaster Leak

A found footage, Analog horror series

The Lancaster Leak - O'Brien State Park
Missing persons happen at state parks all the time, with most never receiving closure. However, after an FBI investigation tape was leaked, new light is shined on a missing person case all the way back from 1985.

Quick Review:
First of the series. I have a soft spot for found footage and Analog horrors so this game got my interest from the beginning. Aside from the unnecessary invisible walls, intense VHS effect and entity info, this games was an almost perfect 15 mins experience. It had a creative use of post event narration. good atmosphere and story telling.

How long it took me to beat: ~20 minutes

The Lancaster Leak - Crisis At Call Center
It seems another tape has been leaked as FBI intern Valerie Bardot (the leaker) is still missing. To prove a point, the leakers have up the ante.

Quick Review:
Second episode of the series. The gameplay consists of Resident evil-esque controls and camera, night shift closing simulator. The plot revolves around you reviewing the leaked tape, dealing with an SCP-like entity, so you know everyone is doomed but the game kept the anxiety levels nicely rising.

How long it took me to beat: ~30 minutes

The Lancaster Leak - Entity Exam
The whistle-blowers have kept their promise and have leaked another tape. It seems to be some sort of training protocol used by the E.R.D. to train their agents on not only entities but field skills to improve their chances of survival.

Quick Review:
Third entry of the series. The gameplay involves you answering questions, as this leak is all about the training protocol used by the Entity Research Department agents. This entry is the strongest in terms of lore and for keeping you on your toes.

How long it took me to beat: ~30 minutes

Fears to Fathom

An episodic psychological horror game where each episode unveils a short story narrated by the ones who survived.

TBA

Dagon

Dagon is a 3D narrative experience in madness based on the cult short story of the same title by the master of cosmic horror and weird fiction, H. P. Lovecraft himself

TBA
Bad/Dropped
The Hat Man: Shadow Ward

Quick Review:
It's a Slenderman clone but with worse gameplay cycle, atmosphere and controls. Forgettable. Dropped.

Backrooms: The Exit

Quick Review:
Not very optimized. Horrible UI. Lots of bugs. Game felt like a flash game with no charm. Might give it another go if these are fixed as I love liminal spaces/backrooms. Dropped.

Despair

Quick Review:
10 minutes of game-play was more than enough to feel despaired. Dropped.

Longeyed Proj

Quick Review:
The only thing good this game had going is some representation of Analog horror.

How long it took me to beat: ~50 minutes

Grunenberg

Quick Review:
It was looking quite promising but it keeps crashing after 12 mins on the Deck.

SEPTEMBER 1999

Quick Review:
A found footage VHS first person horror "game". The game closes after 5 minutes. So much potential but felt like nothing.

The Dire

Quick Review:
Pros: Sounds and environment
Cons: Everything else. Did not seem optimised enough to enjoy on the Deck too. Good thing also was the chapter select that allowed to skip to last chapter to see the ending.
