Underlying Mechanics
Player Mechanics:

  • Your UI displays a hunger meter. Hunger depletes to restore health and stamina.
  • Eating food restores your hunger meter, but excess food cannot be carried or used to fill hunger beyond the maximum.
  • Sprinting consumes stamina when when predators are nearby.
  • Sprinting while your hunger meter is depleted inflicts damage on you.
  • After taking damage, health regeneration will begin in a few seconds, as long as hunger is not depleted or nearly depleted.

Predator Mechanics:

  • Predators are alerted by your flashlight and footsteps.
  • Crouching reduces footsteps noise; hiding in tall grass can conceal you.
  • Predators may still attack if they wander too close or are in a "charge" state.
  • Predators have specific weaknesses, some causing them to flee and others leading to their destruction.
  • Weaknesses are in the form of held items scattered throughout the game.

  • Wanderers are unique predators that can appear in two states: Friendly (blue), or Hostile (red). Though even Friendly Wanderers may be hostile in the dark.
  • Tamed Wanderers will sacrifice themselves to save you from hostile Predators.

World Mechanics:

  • Level tiles disappear behind you and regenerate in front as you move.
  • The world is a 3x3 array of 48x48 meter tiles filled randomly with Trees & Decorations, Lore Objects, and Predators.

Game Progression:

  • Lore objects spawn based on counter values, which are influenced by player interactions.
  • Counters, both visible and hidden, track various game progress metrics.
  • The inevitability adjustment ensures all objects eventually spawn.
  • Different paths and levels are available, allowing for varied exploration.
  • Multiple endings exist, determined by interactions with lore objects and adjustments to counters.

Save System:

  • All changes to counters are immediately saved,
  • Save data is stored in plain JSON text files in the directory: C:\Users<Username>\AppData\LocalLow\Terrific3D\Grabbers in the Woods\
  • Editing save files without understanding may result in game crashes.
  • To encourage curiosity and experimentation, the save files are unobfuscated.
Story and Lore
The game's story is meant to be up to interpretation. Only vague hints and breadcrumbs of the "World" are presented to the player, in order to both encourage curiosity and allow the player to construct their own explanations and reasons for what occurs within the game.
Game Secrets (Spoilers)
This section contains very direct spoilers of the various secrets of the game. Please read this only after you have played the game blindly to your heart's content, and only if you wish to quickly and efficiently acquire remaining achievements/endings, and experience everything the game has to offer.

Spoilers Below
  • Many rocks spawn on the forest floor. They can be thrown to dissuade Predators, or to complete Rock Circle puzzles.

  • Some of the Trees are impostors. They will periodically take steps wandering through the woods, and you may see their arms drifting. Getting too close they will reach out to you, if you get grabbed you will be Caught.

  • Collecting the first Red Letter will cause Predators to begin spawning. Collecting Red Letters will eventually cause a portal to spawn that allows the player to enter the Depths. Collecting every Red Letter will cause a Fortress to begin spawning in the depths, where the player can encounter one of four endings depending on the objects acquired when entering.
  • Within the Depths, Grabbers can lift the player back to the Woods level, allowing you to pursue alternate paths.

  • White "Rare Flowers" will spawn. Touch the flower and it will "Flee". Chase the particles to find it again. Repeat until the flower is collected.
  • Mushrooms will spawn. Collecting 3 or more mushrooms will cause hostile mushroom predators to spawn. These hostile mushrooms only appear if the player steps near their spawn position. Collecting the 3rd Mushroom will immediately spawn hostile mushrooms around the player.
  • Spiders (or Raptors if arachnophobia is enabled) will reward Creature Hearts when killed. They can be killed with Fire, or by several hidden items that can be collected.
  • After beginning to collect Rare Flowers, Mushrooms, and Creature Hearts, a Brewing Table may spawn. Interacting in the correct way with the Brewing Table reveals a secret Finale.

  • Completing a Rock Circle puzzle reward Crystal Shards. Collecting 3 Crystal shards will allow a Forge to spawn. Interacting with the Forge in the correct way can reward the player with a Crystal Sword.

  • Pillars will spawn with runes inscribed. On the ground nearby are buttons with corresponding Runes. Selecting the runes in the right order will reveal Pages of Hidden Knowledge, and eventually a Book of Secrets. Having this book changes the ending within the Fortress. This Book will cause predators to flee, and will cause a portal to the Depths to begin spawning that can either be entered by the player while holding the Book, or used to sacrifice Wanderers. Sacrificing 5 Wanderers unlocks a hidden ending when confronting the finale in the fortress.

  • Parkour puzzles will spawn, each containing a feather. Collecting the feather will cause the next parkour puzzle to begin spawning. Eventually, a Shield will be rewarded for collecting Feathers. The Shield takes away all fall damage, lowers player gravity, and causes Predators to flee. After collecting a Shield, a Finale path will be presented. Collecting the Final Feather will ascend the player up to the Clouds. Completing the challenge of the Clouds level allows the player to escape the dream.

  • Blue Friendly Wanderers can be interacted with, resulting in the player gaining Willpower. Once the player has Willpower, they can interact with Friendly Wanderers to make them Followers. Followers will attempt to follow the player, and sacrifice themselves to protect the player from Predators. The player can only have as many Followers as their Willpower.

  • A small dingy boat will spawn. If interacted with, giant Sharks will begin spawning. Getting near a shark will arm the player with a harpoon. Slaying a Shark with the Harpoon will cause Hostile Squids to begin spawning. If a player is killed by the Squids, they will be dragged to the Depths, and within the Depths a hidden Shipwreck Finale may spawn.

  • Each Treasure Chest you open slowly increases the chance of the chest being a Hostile Predator. Hidden Treasure Chests, or Treasure Chests on parkour courses, are always safe.
  • A shop will begin to spawn once the player collects enough coins. The shop sells runes that will make it easier to accomplish whatever you are hoping to accomplish.
  • Collecting 100 or more coins will cause giant Treasure Chests to spawn. Collect the giant Treasure Chest to claim a secret ending as your reward.

  • There are three Easter Eggs that are slightly more hidden. There is no reward for collecting them, but be proud if you find all three.
