Crash on start fix for Laptops/Integrated Intel Graphics
By Care Bear Bro
Fallout 3 crash fix

Fallout 3 crashing when you start a new game in the main menu? I tried a bunch of fixes but this is the one that worked!

I tried lots of the other high rated guides but nothing helped fix my issues until I found this. Other guides/fixes may work too but this was what helped me on a laptop with integrated graphics!

Download this fix:
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/17209?tab=files&file_id=82734

*I had to make an account but it's free and the website is used for loads of mods etc. so should be trustworthy*

YouTube video example:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwb0Gijaj2A

*The video example is very old and the text is hard to see but you can just about make it out, thank you to the original creator.*

Steps:
  • Download the Intel HD graphics Bypass package
  • Extract the file (this might be done automatically, but if in a zip then extract)
  • Copy file 'D3D9.dll'
  • Paste this into This PC > Windows > Program Files (x86) > Steam > steamapps > common > Fallout 3 goty
  • Go back to the downloaded files folder and copy 'FALLOUT' (.ini/cog icon file) and paste this into the Fallout 3 folder (the same as we have done for the D3D9 file)
  • DELETE the original 'Fallout_default' ini/cog icon file from the Fallout 3 folder.

Then when you get to the main menu for Fallout 3 and go to start a new game, the opening cinematic should play and the game runs!

Hope this is helpful, this is as much as I know for fixes so if this doesn't work please take a look at some of the other highly rated & updated guides!

This fix worked for me! Thank you! Much like you and others, I have followed all the guides and nothing worked. I am going to keep tweeking my graphics settings to see where it fails, but this WORKS!
Note: I placed the .ini in the documents > my games > fallout3 folder in accordance with the readme.txt. Also, I did a clean install of the game and disabled all of the mods I had previously downloaded, but I did not delete them. There could be remnants of those mods that are helping this to work. The game and launcher are also set to run as admin.
