Gather a few sticks (two at minimum), tinder and rocks for sparks.

Instead of making a pile of the sticks and lighting them all at once, start with just one stick and your tinder. Wait to spark the fire until just before the creatures spawn. After lighting the fire, wait about a minute or so before adding 1 more stick to your fire. I also recommend holding one stick ready to light as a torch, in case the monsters get feisty.

By using this method, I was able to survive a night with just 1 big stick and one small stick. Which is extremely helpful when you are working your way to bigger campsites that have more resources. I have also found that it is helpful to build your fire with your back in a crevice and the fire in front of you. This way you cannot get attacked from behind and the bats have a hard time of reaching you since the cliff automatically makes them rise.
